A WordPress.com site can connect through the WordPress.com plugin or its MCP server. A self-hosted WordPress site uses the WordPress AI plugin with an OpenAI connector and API key. These routes have different permissions, authentication, eligibility rules, and capabilities, so choose the one that matches your hosting model before granting access.

Choose the connection method that matches your WordPress site
WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress are separate environments. The WordPress.com plugin and MCP server authenticate your WordPress.com account, while the self-hosted AI plugin connects your own WordPress installation to OpenAI through a connector.

Use the first route when you want the shortest setup and conversational site management. Use the self-hosted route when you need AI features inside your WordPress dashboard. Use MCP when you are connecting an MCP-capable client, such as Codex, to WordPress.com through a standard server connection.
Connect ChatGPT to a WordPress.com site
The WordPress.com plugin is the simplest route for a WordPress.com site. OpenAI describes it as a way to build a new site or manage an existing one through conversation. Depending on the access level you approve, ChatGPT can read site information and, when write access is enabled, perform actions such as creating, publishing, or scheduling content.

Install and authorize the plugin
- In ChatGPT, open Plugins and search for WordPress.com.
- Select the WordPress.com plugin and choose Install plugin.
- When the WordPress.com authorization screen appears, choose one of the available access settings: Full access, Read only, or Keep existing access.
- Click Allow to finish authorization.
- Start a new chat, type
@WordPress.com, and describe one narrowly scoped task.
Full access enables both read and write tools. Read only disables write tools, which makes it suitable for evaluating prompts, checking what the assistant can see, or reviewing traffic and content without allowing changes. Keep existing access preserves the account-level setting already configured for the connection.
The access choice is not limited to one conversation. WordPress.com states that it changes the account-level MCP tool settings and applies to every AI agent connected to that WordPress.com account. Treat the setting as a site-wide permission decision, not as a temporary switch for a single prompt.
Start with constrained requests
After authorization, give the assistant a task with a clear scope and an explicit outcome. Useful first requests include:
@WordPress.com List my five most recent posts and identify which have not been updated recently.@WordPress.com Draft a launch post for review; do not publish it.@WordPress.com Review this page for outdated wording and show the proposed edits without changing the page.@WordPress.com Review recent traffic and suggest three content topics.
When a task involves writing, ask for a draft or a change preview first. OpenAI’s examples include returning a launch post for review, auditing pages for outdated copy, and updating an approved page while preserving unrelated layout. A narrowly defined request makes it easier to verify that the assistant touched the intended content and nothing else.
Use the WordPress AI plugin on a self-hosted site
Self-hosted WordPress does not use the WordPress.com account connection. Instead, the WordPress AI plugin uses the WordPress Connectors system to hold a provider connection that other plugins using the WordPress AI Client can reuse.
Install the AI plugin and connector
- Sign in to WordPress admin and go to Plugins > Add New Plugin.
- Install the plugin titled AI, published by the WordPress.org team.
- Open Settings > Connectors.
- Install the OpenAI connector.
- Add an OpenAI API key when prompted.
- Open Settings > AI and turn on Enable AI.
- Enable only the individual features you intend to use, such as alt-text generation, summaries, title suggestions, image generation, or comment moderation.
The connector centralizes the provider credentials so compatible plugins can reuse the same connection rather than each storing a separate OpenAI configuration. This is different from the WordPress.com plugin: you manage the connection in your own WordPress administration area and supply an API key instead of completing WordPress.com OAuth authorization.

Choose a safer credential location
WordPress accepts the OpenAI credential through an environment variable, a PHP constant, or a database setting. Environment variables and PHP constants keep the key outside the ordinary settings form. A database-stored key is masked in the WordPress interface, but WordPress documents that it is not encrypted.
- Keep the key server-side; do not paste it into a post, theme file exposed to visitors, browser-side JavaScript, or a prompt.
- Restrict administrator access to the connector settings.
- If a key has been exposed, revoke it in the OpenAI account and create a replacement before continuing.
- Use the connector’s central configuration so other compatible AI features do not require copied credentials.
The exact environment-variable name and PHP configuration syntax can depend on the connector version and your hosting setup, so use the field or configuration guidance shown by the installed connector rather than copying an example intended for a different release.
Enable only the features you need
The Settings > AI screen lets you choose individual functions. For an editorial workflow, you might enable title suggestions, summaries, and alt-text generation while leaving comment moderation or image generation off until you have reviewed the results. Enabling fewer tools reduces the number of automated actions that need supervision and makes it easier to identify which feature produced an unexpected result.
Connect an MCP client to WordPress.com
WordPress.com also provides an MCP server for clients that support the Model Context Protocol. The documented server endpoint is https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1.

Paid WordPress.com plans are eligible for MCP access. Free sites receive MCP access for the first 30 days. A self-hosted site is not automatically covered by the WordPress.com MCP service; WordPress.com’s documentation says self-hosted sites need Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete through Jetpack.
Plan eligibility and available tools can change, so check the current WordPress.com account settings before designing an automation around MCP. If the MCP option is absent, confirm that the site is on an eligible plan and that you are signed in as an account holder who can authorize integrations.

Authorize the server
- Enable MCP in your WordPress.com account settings.
- Add
https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1to the MCP-capable client. - Allow the client to open the browser authorization flow.
- Sign in to WordPress.com and approve the requested permissions.
- Return to the client and test with a read-only request before attempting a write.
WordPress.com uses OAuth 2.1 for this connection. Authorization occurs in the browser, no additional software installation is required, and access tokens expire. When a token expires, repeat the browser authorization flow rather than treating the failure as a WordPress content problem.
Codex and ChatGPT connection methods
For Codex, the documented command is:
codex mcp add wpcom-mcp --url https://public-api.wordpress.com/wpcom/v2/mcp/v1ChatGPT uses the WordPress.com plugin route described earlier. Both approaches ultimately depend on the WordPress.com account permissions you approve; an MCP connection does not bypass those permissions.

What ChatGPT can help you do
Draft, revise, and schedule editorial content
You can use the WordPress.com route to draft a launch article, request a revision to an existing page, or schedule a post. Ask for the audience, tone, target length, required links, and a draft-only result. Before granting write access, decide whether the assistant should create a draft, update an existing draft, or publish or schedule directly. Those are materially different risk levels.
Audit existing pages
A page audit can look for outdated wording or information. Ask the assistant to identify the exact page, quote the current passage, explain why it appears outdated, and show replacement copy before making an edit. If the page contains carefully arranged blocks, explicitly require preservation of unrelated layout. OpenAI’s WordPress.com examples describe updating an approved page while preserving other layout, but you should still inspect the rendered page after any change.
Review traffic and propose topics
The WordPress.com plugin can review traffic and use that context to propose content topics. Treat suggestions as editorial input, not as a guarantee of future performance. Ask for the posts or traffic period considered so you can verify that the recommendation reflects the intended site data.
Moderate comments
Comment moderation is an administrative action. Start by asking for a list of comments that match your moderation criteria, then approve, hold, or delete only after reviewing the proposed decisions. On self-hosted WordPress, comment moderation is one of the selectable AI features under Settings > AI; enable it only if your review process can handle false positives.

Generate media metadata and images
The self-hosted AI plugin can generate featured images, alt text, titles, excerpts, and summaries when those options are enabled. Alt text should describe the meaningful subject or function of an image, not repeat a keyword list. Review generated text for accuracy, especially for people, products, locations, charts, and screenshots. An incorrect description can be worse than an empty field for users who rely on assistive technology.

Begin with read-only access
Use Read only while learning what the connection can see and how it interprets your site. This mode disables write tools for the WordPress.com plugin. Move to Full access only when the workflow genuinely requires changes, and return to a narrower setting when the project is complete.
Separate proposal from execution
For consequential tasks, use a two-stage prompt: first request an analysis or draft, then approve a specific change. A useful instruction states the target post or page, the allowed fields, what must remain untouched, and whether publication is forbidden. This reduces accidental edits caused by a broad request such as “clean up my site.”
Review every public change
Inspect generated copy, links, formatting, images, alt text, comments, and scheduling details before content becomes public. Also view the page on the front end after a block or layout edit. AI can follow an instruction while still producing a factual, accessibility, or formatting error that only a human review catches.
Protect credentials and tokens
An OpenAI API key for the self-hosted connector and an OAuth token for WordPress.com MCP are different credentials. Never substitute one for the other. Keep API keys server-side, restrict who can access connector settings, and reauthorize MCP when an expiring token requires it. Do not include secrets in prompts or support screenshots.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
The WordPress.com plugin is visible but cannot change anything
Check the authorization setting first. Read only disables write tools by design. Reopen the WordPress.com authorization settings and grant Full access only if the requested workflow needs writes. Also verify that the chat is addressing the plugin with @WordPress.com.
The WordPress.com plugin cannot see the intended site
Confirm that you authorized the WordPress.com account that owns or administers the site. If several sites share the account, identify the site explicitly in the prompt and test with a request that lists recent posts before attempting an edit.
The self-hosted AI feature does not appear
Confirm that the plugin titled AI from the WordPress.org team is installed, the OpenAI connector is installed under Settings > Connectors, and Enable AI is on under Settings > AI. Individual capabilities are disabled until you enable them, so check the specific option rather than assuming every feature is active.
The self-hosted connector rejects the credential
Re-enter or replace the API key, check which credential location your configuration uses, and make sure the key has not been exposed or revoked. If the key is stored in the database, remember that masking in the interface does not mean encryption. After changing server-level configuration, follow your host’s normal process for reloading the PHP application.
MCP authorization fails or stops working later
Verify the server URL exactly, then repeat the browser OAuth flow. OAuth 2.1 access tokens expire, so a later authorization prompt is expected. If the account is free, check whether its 30-day MCP period has ended; if the site is self-hosted, verify that the required Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete arrangement is active.
A practical rollout checklist
- Identify whether the site is WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress.
- Select the matching route: WordPress.com plugin, self-hosted AI plugin, or MCP.
- Confirm plan or service eligibility before configuring a workflow.
- Start with read-only access or draft-only requests.
- Limit the tools or AI options to the features you actually need.
- Keep API keys server-side and treat OAuth tokens as temporary credentials.
- Test with one post, page, image, or comment set.
- Review the result on the front end and in the editor before publishing.
- Document who can authorize access and who approves public changes.
Once the test succeeds, expand the workflow gradually. A site-wide automation should be earned through small, reversible tasks rather than enabled in one step.
