To make a basic Minecraft firework rocket, place one paper and one to three gunpowder in the crafting grid. Every recipe produces three rockets: one gunpowder gives flight duration 1, two gives duration 2, and three gives duration 3. A rocket made without a firework star has no explosion and is the usual choice for Elytra boosting.

For colored or shaped fireworks, craft a firework star from gunpowder, dye and an optional shape ingredient, then combine that star with paper and gunpowder. Dyes set explosion colors, shape ingredients change the burst, diamond adds a trail, glowstone dust adds twinkle, and extra dyes can create a fade. Rockets can launch from blocks or dispensers, propel a gliding player, and serve as crossbow ammunition when they contain an explosion effect.

Minecraft separates a rocket’s propulsion from its visual or damaging effect. Paper and gunpowder create the rocket itself. A firework star is optional; it determines whether the rocket explodes and stores the colors, shape and special effects.
- Paper: the basic rocket recipe requires one paper.
- Gunpowder: one, two or three pieces set flight duration 1, 2 or 3. Gunpowder is also required when crafting a firework star.
- Dye: one or more dyes set the explosion’s color. Multiple dyes can be combined in a star for a multicolor explosion.
- Shape ingredient: no shape ingredient creates a small ball; a fire charge creates a large ball; a gold nugget creates a star; a feather creates a burst; and a head creates a Creeper-face pattern.
- Diamond: adds a trail to the explosion.
- Glowstone dust: adds a twinkle effect.
The star is the visual payload. If you skip it, the rocket still launches and can provide a boost, but it has no explosion effect.

How to craft basic rockets
Choose the flight duration
Put one paper and the desired amount of gunpowder into a crafting grid. The gunpowder count is the only recipe change needed to select duration.
| Paper | Gunpowder | Flight duration | Rockets produced | Explosion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1 | 3 | None unless a star is added |
| 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 | None unless a star is added |
| 1 | 3 | 3 | 3 | None unless a star is added |
Every recipe makes three rockets, so a single crafting operation gives a small stack for testing a route, timing a launch or setting up a display. The duration value describes the rocket’s flight setting; it does not add a visual effect by itself.
Crafting steps
- Open a crafting table or another grid that accepts the recipe.
- Place one paper in the grid.
- Place one, two or three gunpowder beside it, depending on the duration you want.
- Move the resulting three rockets to your inventory.
For an ordinary firework display, this starless recipe gives a launch without an explosion. To make a colored or shaped burst, craft a star first and include it in the rocket recipe.
How to craft a firework star
Make the base star
- Place gunpowder in the crafting grid.
- Add one or more dyes. The selected dyes become the explosion colors.
- Optionally add one shape ingredient from the table below.
- Optionally add diamond for a trail and glowstone dust for twinkle.
- Collect the firework star.
A star with only gunpowder and dye produces the default small-ball explosion. Shape, trail and twinkle ingredients are choices layered onto that base; they do not replace the gunpowder or color dye.
Shape ingredients
| Shape ingredient | Explosion form | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| No shape ingredient | Small ball | General-purpose round burst |
| Fire charge | Large ball | A larger-looking spherical burst |
| Gold nugget | Star | A star-shaped pattern |
| Feather | Burst | A spreading burst pattern |
| Head | Creeper face | A Creeper-face design |
Trail and twinkle
Add diamond while crafting the star when you want the explosion to leave a trail. Add glowstone dust when you want the burst to twinkle. These are independent options: a star can have a trail, twinkle, both, or neither. The star’s dye choices and shape remain separate from those effects.

How to make colored and shaped rockets
Once the star is ready, turn it into a rocket by combining one paper, one to three gunpowder and the star. The gunpowder still controls flight duration, while the star carries the visual design.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Craft a firework star with the dye, shape ingredient and optional diamond or glowstone dust you want.
- Place one paper in the crafting grid.
- Add one, two or three gunpowder for duration 1, 2 or 3.
- Add the firework star.
- Move the three resulting rockets to your inventory.
For example, a star made with gunpowder, a red dye and a gold nugget becomes a red star-shaped effect. Combining that star with one paper and two gunpowder makes three duration-2 rockets carrying that design. Changing the rocket’s gunpowder count changes only the flight setting; it does not alter the star’s color or shape.
Planning a design before crafting
- Color first: choose one dye for a single-color burst or several dyes for a multicolor palette.
- Shape second: select small ball, large ball, star, burst or Creeper face according to the display’s theme.
- Texture last: add diamond for a trail, glowstone dust for twinkle, or both for a more elaborate effect.
- Duration separately: select one to three gunpowder when turning the star into a rocket, based on how long you want the rocket to fly before its effect.
This separation makes it easier to produce several durations of the same design: reuse the same star in separate rocket recipes while changing only the gunpowder count.
How to add fade colors
Fade colors are added to an existing firework star rather than directly to the rocket. Combine the completed star with one or more additional dyes. Those dyes become the colors that appear as the original explosion fades. After adding the fade colors, place the modified star in a rocket recipe with paper and one to three gunpowder.
- Craft the initial star with its main dye, shape and any trail or twinkle effect.
- Combine that existing star with one or more additional dyes to set the fade colors.
- Use the resulting star in the rocket recipe with paper and the desired amount of gunpowder.
Keep the first set of dyes and the fade dyes conceptually separate: the first set establishes the main explosion colors, while the later dyes establish the fade palette.

Using fireworks for displays
Launching from a block
Use a rocket on a block for a vertical launch. This is the simplest way to test a design or trigger a single burst by hand. Because the rocket’s star determines whether an explosion occurs, a starless rocket gives a launch without a visible burst, while a star-equipped rocket produces its stored color, shape and optional effects.
Building a dispenser show
Dispensers launch fireworks in the direction they face, making them useful for redstone-powered shows. Point each dispenser where you want its rocket to travel, load the chosen rockets, and trigger the dispensers with your redstone timing system. Direction matters: rotating a dispenser changes the launch path without changing the rocket’s duration or star design.
For a coordinated display, prepare separate batches for separate roles. Starless rockets can provide motion or timing without an explosion, while star-equipped rockets supply the visible bursts. Use different stars for color or shape variety, and vary the duration when launch timing needs to differ.
Choosing rockets for Elytra flight
Use starless rockets while gliding. A rocket pushes the player in the direction they are facing, and a longer flight duration supplies a longer boost. The normal flight choices are therefore rockets made from paper and one, two or three gunpowder with no firework star.

Duration choices for travel
| Rocket build | Boost setting | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Paper + 1 gunpowder | Flight duration 1 | Shorter boost when making small steering corrections |
| Paper + 2 gunpowder | Flight duration 2 | Intermediate boost for routine travel |
| Paper + 3 gunpowder | Flight duration 3 | Longer boost when you want the rocket to sustain the push |
Face the direction you want to travel before using the rocket; the push follows the direction faced. Carrying multiple duration types lets you make fine corrections with shorter rockets and use longer boosts when a sustained push is more useful.

Why explosive rockets are risky in flight
A star-equipped rocket can hurt the player when it explodes. That is why starless rockets are the usual Elytra choice. Keep explosion stars for displays or other uses unless you deliberately accept the damage risk.
Using fireworks in a crossbow
Firework rockets can be loaded as crossbow ammunition. They deal damage only when they contain an explosion effect, so a starless rocket does not provide the explosive damage associated with this ammunition.

When a rocket contains multiple firework stars, more stars add damage. The stars’ visual properties still define the explosion’s colors, shape and special effects, but the important combat distinction is whether an explosion effect is present and how many stars the rocket carries.
Multishot interaction
A crossbow with Multishot can fire three rockets with the same effects. Prepare the ammunition with the desired explosion stars, load the crossbow, and remember that the three projectiles inherit those rocket effects. The ammunition’s star configuration therefore determines both the visible burst and the damage contribution.
Crossbow selection checklist
- Use a rocket containing at least one firework star when damage is required.
- Add additional stars when you want the rocket to deal more damage.
- Use the star’s dyes and shape ingredients to distinguish ammunition visually.
- With Multishot, expect three rockets carrying the same effects from one firing action.
Rocket comparison by purpose
| Purpose | Explosion effect | Flight duration | Visual design | Key choice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elytra travel | None; use a starless rocket | 1, 2 or 3 | No explosion design | Choose duration based on the length of boost needed |
| Hand or block display | Optional; add a firework star for an explosion | 1, 2 or 3 | Color, shape, trail, twinkle and fade are available | Build the star first, then select duration |
| Dispenser show | Optional; star-equipped rockets create bursts | 1, 2 or 3 | Each loaded rocket keeps its own design | Face dispensers in the intended launch direction |
| Crossbow ammunition | Required for damage | 1, 2 or 3 | Star colors and shapes remain visible | More stars add damage; Multishot fires three with the same effects |
Common crafting mistakes and fixes
“My rocket launches but does not explode.”
The rocket was made without a firework star. Craft a star from gunpowder and dye, optionally add a shape ingredient, diamond or glowstone dust, and include that star when crafting the rocket.

“The rocket duration is not what I expected.”
Check the gunpowder count in the rocket recipe. One gunpowder produces duration 1, two produces duration 2 and three produces duration 3. The recipe always outputs three rockets.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The color is right but the shape is wrong.”
Shape is controlled by the star’s shape ingredient, not by the dye. Use no shape ingredient for a small ball, fire charge for a large ball, gold nugget for a star, feather for a burst or a head for a Creeper face.
“I wanted a trail or twinkle.”
Those effects must be added while crafting the star. Diamond supplies the trail and glowstone dust supplies twinkle. Adding them after the rocket is finished does not describe the recipe; modify the star first, then craft the rocket.
“My Elytra rocket damaged me.”
Check whether the rocket contains a firework star. Star-equipped rockets can hurt the player when they explode. Use a starless rocket for normal Elytra boosting.
“My crossbow rocket does not deal damage.”
Crossbow rockets deal damage only when they contain an explosion effect. Recraft the ammunition with a firework star. Adding more stars increases damage, and a Multishot crossbow fires three rockets with the same effects.
Edition and version considerations
The recipe and use descriptions above cover general Minecraft mechanics. The exact Java-versus-Bedrock edition and release target is not specified here, so verify the behavior in the edition and version you are documenting before publishing a build-specific tutorial. Recipe interfaces and labels can differ between editions even when the underlying ingredients are described the same way.
If you are writing instructions for a server, modpack or classroom world, state the edition and release alongside the recipe. That prevents readers from assuming that a mechanic documented for one release is guaranteed in every other release.
Quick Recap
A practical build checklist
- Decide whether the rocket is for an Elytra, a display or a crossbow.
- For Elytra travel, skip the star and choose one, two or three gunpowder for the desired duration.
- For a display, craft a star with dyes, then choose the shape ingredient.
- Add diamond for a trail, glowstone dust for twinkle, or both.
- For a fade, combine the finished star with the additional dyes before making the rocket.
- Combine one paper, one to three gunpowder and the finished star; collect the three rockets.
- For dispensers, check that each dispenser faces the intended launch direction.
- For a crossbow, include at least one star when damage is required; add stars for more damage and use Multishot when you want three rockets with matching effects.
