How to Add Anti-Cheat to Your FiveM Server

A practical, defense-in-depth guide to FiveM anti-cheat: secure networked events on the server, configure FXServer safely, restrict txAdmin, vet resources, and monitor false positives.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to add anti-cheat to a FiveM server is defense in depth: validate every networked event on the server, enable FXServer’s security controls deliberately, restrict txAdmin powers, review every resource, and protect the network and entity system. A client-side detector or a single anti-cheat resource cannot secure a server when an attacker can alter client code or call events directly.

Follow the sequence below on a test instance first, then promote the changes with logging and a rollback plan. The result is not an impenetrable server; it is a server that rejects forged state changes, limits administrative damage, detects suspicious patterns, and gives you evidence for fair moderation.

What FiveM anti-cheat must actually protect

Most serious FiveM exploits do not require an attacker to win a visual battle with a client detector. They abuse the trust boundary between a player’s client and your server: a forged event, an inflated quantity, an impossible position, a fake job state, or a request to create an entity that the game mode never intended to allow.

Client code is modifiable. A check that runs only in a Lua or JavaScript file downloaded by the player can be removed, bypassed, or replayed. The server is the authority that can compare a request with authoritative money, inventory, permissions, state bags, position, experience, cooldowns, and current match state. Cfx’s Secure Your Events guidance makes the same point: even a strong anti-cheat becomes safer when server events themselves enforce rules.

Prevention, detection, and response are different jobs

  • Prevention rejects an invalid request before it changes money, inventory, vehicles, jobs, entities, or other persistent state.
  • Detection records patterns such as repeated impossible requests, abnormal event rates, or entity creation outside a player’s role.
  • Response limits permissions, kicks or bans according to a documented policy, and preserves enough evidence to investigate false positives.

Use all three. A detector that merely announces a suspicious client while the server still accepts an unvalidated purchase event is not a security boundary.

Prepare a safe rollout

Make a complete resource and event inventory

Export a list of every resource in resources.cfg (or your chosen startup configuration), then search each resource for RegisterNetEvent, TriggerServerEvent, TriggerClientEvent, and networked handlers registered by a framework. Record the event name, whether it is client-to-server, server-to-client, or same-context, the values it accepts, and the game state it can change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include framework callbacks and exports in the inventory. An event hidden behind a job, shop, crafting, inventory, garage, housing, phone, or admin resource is still an attack surface. Mark events that write to a database or grant an item as high impact so they receive the strictest review first.

Use a staging server and backups

  • Copy the production database and server configuration to an isolated test instance.
  • Keep a known-good FXServer build and resource package so a bad convar or update can be reverted.
  • Back up persistent data before changing validation logic that can alter purchases, payouts, inventories, or bans.
  • Test with a normal player account, a moderator account, and an account with no job or character data. Security rules often fail at role boundaries.

Do not test exploit behavior on a public server. Reproduce suspicious calls only in an environment you control, and remove test accounts and test data afterward.

Step 1: Register events with the smallest possible scope

Choose the correct registration function

Use AddEventHandler for an event that stays in the same execution context. Use RegisterNetEvent only when the event must cross the client/server boundary. Registering an event as networked when it does not need to be networked increases the number of places an attacker can attempt to invoke it.

Registration is not authorization. A correctly registered event can still be called by a malicious client, so every networked handler needs server-side authorization and input validation.

Guard server-originated client handlers

For a handler on the client that is intended to accept only a server-originated event, apply the documented source == 65535 check before processing it. This prevents a different client event path from being treated as an authoritative server message. The check is a routing safeguard, not proof that the rest of the payload is safe.

RegisterNetEvent('ui:serverMessage', function(message)
if source ~= 65535 then return end
-- Treat the message as display data only; never grant money or permissions here.
    SendNUIMessage({ type = 'message', text = tostring(message) })
end)

Keep privileged decisions on the server even when the client needs a notification, animation, or menu update. A client handler should not be the place where a reward, role, weapon, or inventory change is finalized.

Step 2: Validate every request on the server

Re-read authoritative state

When an event arrives, derive the player identity from the server-provided source and fetch current state from the server. Do not accept a client-supplied balance, inventory count, job, experience level, rank, position, or permission as truth. The server should re-read those values immediately before making the change.

For a purchase, for example, look up the current price from a server-side catalog, read the player’s current funds, verify the item is allowed for that character, and then perform an atomic debit-and-grant operation. A client may send an item name and quantity as a request, but it must not send the price or the resulting balance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reject malformed, impossible, and excessive input

  • Check types and ranges: a count must be an integer within the game’s allowed range, not a negative number, a fractional value, or an unbounded integer.
  • Check allow-lists for item names, vehicle models, coordinates, commands, and job actions rather than passing arbitrary strings to another resource.
  • Check location on the server. A player buying from a shop must be close enough to that shop according to server-observed coordinates, not coordinates supplied in the event.
  • Check job, character, faction, and permission state on the server at the time of the action.
  • Reject duplicate submissions with a transaction ID, a short-lived nonce, or a server-side cooldown. Make the operation idempotent where possible.
  • Apply rate limits per player and per event. A valid request sent hundreds of times per second is still abusive.
  • Use server-side ownership checks before modifying a vehicle, property, container, entity, or other player’s data.

Example validation pattern

The following is a framework-neutral pattern. Replace the placeholder state lookups with your framework’s server APIs; do not copy a client-side value into the trusted fields.

RegisterNetEvent('shop:buy', function(itemName, requestedCount, requestId)
    local src = source

if type(itemName) ~= 'string' then return end
    if type(requestedCount) ~= 'number' or requestedCount % 1 ~= 0 then return end
if requestedCount < 1 or requestedCount > 10 then return end
if type(requestId) ~= 'string' then return end

    local item = ServerCatalog[itemName]
if not item then return end
if RecentlyUsed(src, requestId) then return end
if not IsNearShop(src, item.shopId) then return end
if not PlayerMayBuy(src, itemName) then return end

    local total = item.serverPrice * requestedCount
if not HasServerFunds(src, total) then return end

    MarkRequestUsed(src, requestId)
    RemoveServerFunds(src, total)
    AddServerItem(src, itemName, requestedCount)
    TriggerClientEvent('shop:purchaseResult', src, true, itemName, requestedCount)
end)

Perform the final debit and grant as one protected transaction in your persistence layer. If the database operation fails, do not tell the client that the purchase succeeded. If your framework cannot make the operation atomic, add reconciliation and an audit record so a crash cannot silently duplicate rewards.

Never trust a client-only success path

Client checks are useful for user experience, such as disabling a button or showing a range indicator. They are not security controls. Assume an attacker can skip the menu, alter coordinates, call the event repeatedly, change local state, or invoke an event with values your interface never sends.

Step 3: Review FXServer’s built-in security controls

FXServer includes connection, settings-integrity, identity-trust, and control-request defenses. Review these convars in the server configuration and change them only after reading the behavior for the FXServer build you run. Defaults and enforcement details can change between builds, so treat an old configuration snippet as a starting point, not a universal baseline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control What to review Important qualification
sv_kick_players_cnl_timeout_sec How long a connection can fail the CNL check before the player is removed. Use the meaning and units documented for your build; an aggressive value can remove players with transient network problems.
sv_kick_players_cnl_update_rate_sec How often the CNL status is refreshed. Changing the interval affects detection frequency and false-positive exposure.
sv_kick_players_cnl_consecutive_failures How many consecutive CNL failures trigger a kick. The documentation gives 2 as an example default; verify the value in your current build rather than assuming it is universal.
sv_pure_verify_client_settings Whether client settings are checked for integrity. Test with legitimate overlays and accessibility tools used by your community before enforcing a stricter policy.
sv_authMaxVariance The maximum accepted variance in the authentication signal. Keep the documented build-specific range and meaning beside your configuration.
sv_authMinTrust The minimum authentication trust level accepted by the server. Raising trust requirements can affect legitimate users; stage and monitor the change.
sv_filterRequestControl Filtering of network control requests for entities. Check how it interacts with scripted vehicles, mission entities, and your framework before enabling a restrictive mode.
sv_disableClientReplays Disables client replays, removing some cheating options. It also disables Rockstar Editor, so disclose that trade-off to players and staff.

Do not paste every available convar into production. Establish a baseline, change one control at a time, and record the old value, new value, FXServer build, reason, and observed effect. A kick generated by a connection-integrity control is a signal to investigate, not automatic proof of a cheat.

Step 4: Deploy through txAdmin and apply least privilege

Install or rebuild the server through the supported flow

  1. Download a recommended FXServer build for your operating system.
  2. Start txAdmin and link the instance to your Cfx account.
  3. Choose an appropriate server recipe and review every resource it will install.
  4. Enter the server key in the setup flow; do not paste keys into public logs or commit them to a repository.
  5. Save and run the server, then confirm that the console is clean before adding anti-cheat resources or changing strict controls.

This sequence gives you a known management path and makes it easier to distinguish a resource problem from a host or build problem.

Separate observation, moderation, and control

In txAdmin, grant each staff member only the permissions required for their job. Keep console access, resource control, restarts, bans, kicks, and arbitrary command execution as separate capabilities rather than giving every moderator full control.

  • Observers can view status and logs but cannot change resources or player state.
  • Moderators can handle defined kicks or bans but cannot restart resources or run arbitrary commands.
  • Developers can inspect and restart approved resources without receiving permanent ban authority.
  • Owners or senior operators retain console and server-control permissions, protected by strong account security and a small, documented group.

Review the permission list after staff changes. Remove unused accounts, avoid shared credentials, and log who changed a resource or executed a command. An anti-cheat loses value if a compromised staff account can disable it in one action.

Step 5: Vet a third-party anti-cheat resource

FiveM permits anti-cheat resources within its terms, but permission to run a resource is not evidence that it is effective, safe, or compatible with your server. Cfx prohibits protection rackets and global ban lists that cannot be verified. Treat any resource that threatens access unless you pay, hides its detection logic while demanding broad access, or imports unverifiable bans as a procurement and security risk.

Use a decision matrix, not a marketing score

Question What a responsible operator should verify
Server-side coverage Which checks execute on the server, and which are only client telemetry?
Event and entity detection Can it identify abnormal event rates, forged requests, unauthorized entity creation, or control abuse without replacing your own validation?
False-positive controls Is there a test mode, evidence log, allow-list, appeal path, and a way to reverse an action?
Updates and support Does the maintainer publish compatibility information for current FXServer builds and respond to breakage?
Performance cost What work runs per tick, per player, or per event, and can you disable modules you do not need?
Data collection What identifiers, logs, or machine details leave your server, for how long, and under what privacy terms?
Required permissions Does it request only the filesystem, command, or process access needed for its stated function?
Framework compatibility Has it been tested with your ESX, QBCore, Qbox, custom framework, inventory, and voice stack?
Ban portability Can you export evidence and bans, and can a player appeal or be unbanned without vendor dependence?

Inspect the resource before enabling it

  • Read the source, manifest, startup instructions, and permission requests. Look for obfuscated code, hidden downloads, or commands unrelated to detection.
  • Run it on staging and observe CPU, memory, network traffic, event latency, and database writes at your normal player count.
  • Enable logging before automatic punishment. Confirm that a moderator can understand why an action was raised.
  • Test common legitimate behavior: rapid inventory use, vehicle spawning by approved jobs, teleportation used by staff, resource restarts, and framework callbacks.
  • Document an update and rollback procedure. A detector that cannot be disabled cleanly can turn a compatibility bug into a mass kick or ban.

FiveM’s sandbox restricts dangerous operations, and explicit permission overrides exist for trusted resources. Do not grant broad overrides merely to make an installation succeed; first determine which operation needs the permission and whether the resource can work without it.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 6: Protect the network and entity boundary

Keep firewall and allow-lists current

Maintain host firewall rules, DDoS protections, and anti-cheat allow-lists together with the current Cfx IP list. When the platform changes its ranges, update every layer in the same maintenance window. An outdated allow-list can block legitimate platform traffic or leave a monitoring path exposed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restrict management ports to trusted administrator networks where practical. Do not expose txAdmin or database services to the public Internet simply because the game port must be reachable. Use strong credentials, encrypted management access, and host-level logging.

Control entity creation

Entity abuse can overload a server, disrupt other players, or create objects that bypass gameplay rules. Consider strict entity lockdown for resources or modes that do not need unrestricted creation. Where appropriate, handle entityCreating, validate the creator and entity type, and cancel creation that does not match the server’s rules.

AddEventHandler('entityCreating', function(entity)
    local creator = NetworkGetEntityOwner(entity)
    local entityType = GetEntityType(entity)

    if not IsCreatorAllowed(creator, entityType) then
        CancelEvent()
        LogEntityRejection(creator, entityType)
    end
end)

Adapt the ownership lookup and allow-list to your FXServer build and resource architecture. Mission scripts, police systems, garages, and scripted props may legitimately create entities; test those paths before enforcing a blanket restriction. Entity controls complement event validation: they do not authorize a player to buy, own, or use an object.

Step 7: Log, tune, and respond without punishing blindly

Capture useful rejection records

For each rejected high-impact event, record the player identifier, event name, rejection reason, timestamp, resource version, and relevant server-observed state. Examples include the server position versus the required location, the authoritative balance, the requested count, the current job, and the number of attempts in the rate-limit window. Redact secrets and avoid collecting more personal data than your moderation policy requires.

Aggregate repeated failures by player and event. One malformed request may be a broken menu; a sustained pattern across unrelated resources is stronger evidence. Keep raw logs long enough for an appeal and then apply a documented retention period.

Use staged consequences

  1. Reject the request and notify the player only with a generic failure message; do not reveal the exact rule an attacker is probing.
  2. Increase logging or place the account in a review state when the pattern repeats.
  3. Ask a moderator to compare the evidence with the player’s session, network conditions, and known resource bugs.
  4. Kick or ban according to published server rules, preserving the evidence and the reason.
  5. Provide an appeal route and a reversal process for false positives.

Automatic kicks are indicators, not infallible verdicts. Connection checks, settings-integrity checks, custom overlays, and resource incompatibilities can resemble cheating. Review before applying a permanent action whenever your evidence and server rules permit it.

Keep the whole stack maintained

Update FXServer builds and resources on a schedule, but stage updates before production. Read changelogs for security or networking changes, retest event validation after framework updates, and review newly installed resources with the same permission and source checks as an anti-cheat package. Remove abandoned resources that expose unused network events.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Players receive items or money without using the intended menu. A networked event trusts client-supplied values or lacks authorization. Move the decision to the server, re-read state, enforce allow-lists, and add rate and duplicate protection.
A security resource reports violations but exploits still work. The resource detects behavior without preventing the underlying event, or the event is unregistered and handled elsewhere. Trace the complete event path and make the server handler reject invalid state before any write.
Legitimate players are kicked after a convar change. Connection or settings-integrity thresholds are too strict for the build or player network. Check the documented semantics and current values, revert one change, monitor failures, then retune gradually.
Police, garage, or mission scripts stop creating entities. Entity lockdown or entityCreating filtering lacks an allow-list for legitimate creators and types. Log the creator and type, add a narrow rule for the required resource, and retest instead of disabling all protection.
Staff can disable protections accidentally. txAdmin roles combine console, resource, restart, and arbitrary-command permissions. Split permissions by duty, remove unused accounts, and review audit logs.
An anti-cheat update causes crashes or high CPU. Build or framework incompatibility, excessive per-tick scanning, or an unnecessary module. Roll back, measure on staging, disable the offending module, and wait for a compatible release before redeploying.
Players cannot appeal a ban or you cannot migrate records. The resource stores decisions in a closed or unverifiable global system. Prefer local evidence, exportable records, and a documented appeal and unban process.

How to decide whether you need a paid or community resource

Start with your own server-side controls. If every high-impact event validates state, entity creation is bounded, administration is least-privileged, and logs are actionable, an additional resource should solve a clearly identified gap rather than duplicate checks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A third-party resource is worth evaluating when it adds maintainable detection or evidence that your team cannot reasonably build, and when it meets the permission, privacy, compatibility, support, and appeal requirements above. It should layer on top of validation, not become the only thing standing between a client and your database.

There is no authoritative public performance study that ranks FiveM anti-cheat products or proves a universal detection rate. Compare measurable behavior on your staging server—CPU impact, event latency, false positives, log quality, and recovery workflow—rather than treating an advertised percentage as a guarantee.

A practical maintenance checklist

  • Every networked event has a documented owner, purpose, input schema, authorization rule, rate limit, and rejection log.
  • Server code re-reads money, inventory, state bags, position, experience, and permissions before changing state.
  • Client handlers that must be server-originated enforce the source == 65535 check and never grant authority.
  • FXServer convars are recorded with their build, rationale, and rollback value.
  • txAdmin roles separate observation, moderation, resource management, restarts, bans, kicks, and arbitrary commands.
  • Firewall, DDoS, and Cfx allow-lists are reviewed together after platform changes.
  • Entity creation has a tested policy for creator, type, ownership, and legitimate scripted exceptions.
  • Anti-cheat resources are inspected for source, permissions, updates, data collection, compatibility, and exportable bans.
  • Rejected events and automatic kicks are reviewed for patterns and false positives.
  • FXServer and resources are updated through staging with backups and a tested rollback.

Bottom line

Add anti-cheat by making the server authoritative first, then layer FXServer controls, least-privilege administration, vetted detection, network filtering, and entity protections around it. This approach stops the highest-impact abuses at the point where they would change game state, gives moderators evidence instead of guesses, and remains maintainable as your FiveM resources and player count change.
