The right way to change a Minecraft player’s permissions depends on the edition and hosting mode. In Bedrock, worlds and Realms use player controls for roles and abilities; a Bedrock Dedicated Server uses administrator commands and a permissions file. Java servers do not have one universal rank-management screen, so their server software or plugins determine the exact process. You must be the world owner, Realm owner, server owner, or a sufficiently privileged administrator to make the change.

First identify your edition and hosting mode
Before entering a command, determine whether you are playing Bedrock or Java Edition and whether the game is a local world, a Realm, or a Dedicated Server. The control surface, available roles, and side effects differ between these cases.

What the common player roles mean
Operator
An operator is a player granted elevated server authority. On a Bedrock Dedicated Server, the documented way to grant that status is /op <playername>; the corresponding removal command is /deop <playername>. Operator status is broader than an ordinary member role, so grant it only to people who need administrative control.
Member and visitor
Bedrock worlds and Realms expose player controls for roles such as Member and Visitor, as well as Operator. Those controls determine what a participant can do in that world or Realm. The exact screen and wording can vary by platform and game version, but the owner or an authorized operator changes the role from the player-management controls rather than from a Java-style plugin command.

Permission authority
Permission changes are administrative actions. Minecraft’s official commands guidance states that multiplayer command use requires a high-enough permission level and that an owner who started a server or Realm normally has permissions by default. If you are merely a player on somebody else’s server, you cannot promote yourself; ask the owner or administrator to make the change.
Change a player’s role in a Bedrock world or Realm
Use this workflow when you play Bedrock without managing a separate Dedicated Server process.

- Open the world’s or Realm’s player controls. Select the player whose access you want to change.
- Choose the required role, such as Operator, Member, or Visitor, and confirm the change. Use the least powerful role that meets the player’s need.
- Have the affected player leave and rejoin if the game does not immediately reflect the new abilities. This is a practical refresh step, not a substitute for correcting an incorrectly saved role.
- Test with the player account in a safe area. Confirm only the actions you intended to allow, and remove elevated access when the administrative task is finished.
Player controls are the appropriate place to change roles in a Bedrock world or Realm. Do not treat a Realm like a Dedicated Server: the server-console commands described below apply to a Bedrock Dedicated Server, not to an ordinary Realm interface.

Enable commands in a Bedrock world only when you accept the achievement consequence
In a Bedrock single-player world, command access is controlled from Game settings with Allow Cheats. The official Minecraft guide says that if commands were not enabled when the world was created, you can open the World Options screen later and enable “Allow Commands.” It also states that enabling cheats permanently stops achievements from being unlocked in that world, even if cheats are subsequently turned off.
- Use this setting only when command access is worth giving up achievements for that world.
- Do not enable it casually to solve a temporary permissions problem; use the player controls when a role change is all you need.
- In multiplayer, the setting does not make every participant an administrator. The person issuing commands still needs a sufficiently high permission level.
Grant or revoke operator status on a Bedrock Dedicated Server
A Bedrock Dedicated Server provides a console or administrator command interface. Sign in to that interface as an administrator, then enter the command exactly as shown. Replace <playername> with the player’s in-game name.

Safe command procedure
- Open the running server console or the hosting panel’s administrator command interface. Do not enter these commands into an ordinary client chat window unless that interface explicitly forwards administrator commands to the server.
- Confirm that your account has the required administrative permission. A “no permission” response means the command was rejected; it is not evidence that the player name was wrong.
- Enter the operator or de-operator command with the player’s exact in-game name. Preserve capitalization and punctuation rather than using a nickname.
- Use
/permission listto inspect the server’s current permission state when you need to verify what the server recognizes. - Ask the target player to reconnect or retry the action that required the role. This confirms the practical effect without granting additional privileges.
Reload a Bedrock Dedicated Server permissions file
Administrators sometimes edit a server permissions file outside the game. Editing a file alone does not tell the running server to reread it. After saving the intended changes, open the Dedicated Server’s administrator interface and run /permission reload. Microsoft describes this action as reloading and applying permissions on a Dedicated Server.

- Stop making permission changes from multiple places at the same time. Decide whether the file or the console is the authoritative change you are applying.
- Edit the permissions file using the format required by your Bedrock Dedicated Server build and hosting environment. The exact file location and syntax are deployment-specific.
- Save the file, then issue
/permission reloadfrom the server console or administrator command interface. - Run
/permission listto inspect the permissions the server reports after the reload. - Test with an account whose intended access is already known. If the result is wrong, correct the file format or entry and reload again rather than repeatedly granting broader access.
The documented command reference establishes the list and reload behavior, but it does not provide one universal file path or a single file format for every hosting arrangement. Use the configuration instructions that match your server build; do not copy a path from an unrelated host.
Granular permissions versus operator status
Operator status is a broad administrative grant. A role such as Member or Visitor in a Bedrock world or Realm is a different, more focused control. Decide first whether the player needs to administer the server or merely participate in it.
- Choose Operator when the player genuinely needs elevated server administration and you accept the security implications.
- Choose Member when the player should participate normally without operator-level authority.
- Choose Visitor when the player should have the restricted experience represented by that role in the world or Realm.
Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation includes a set action for the /permission command, but the exact syntax and available permission names depend on the server implementation. Do not invent a command pattern from a different edition or plugin. If you need granular controls beyond operator status, use the command reference for your exact Dedicated Server version and confirm the result with /permission list.

Java Edition: why the instructions are different
The official material establishes that multiplayer commands are permission-gated, but it does not define one current Java Edition rank-management interface. Java servers can expose different controls through their server software, console, or installed plugins. Consequently, a command that works on one Java server may be unavailable or have a different meaning on another.
- Identify the server software and the permission or rank plugin, if any. The server owner or hosting administrator should be able to provide this information.
- Use that implementation’s documentation for its exact command names, argument order, and rank definitions.
- Make the change from the server console or an account already authorized by that implementation.
- Verify the player’s effective abilities in-game and check the server’s own permission display or log if the change does not appear.
Do not apply the Bedrock Dedicated Server /permission workflow to Java by assumption. Edition and server software are decisive here.
Troubleshoot the most common permission failures
“You do not have permission” appears
The account issuing the command lacks the required permission level. Have the server owner or an administrator perform the change, or use the hosting panel’s authorized console. Changing the target player’s role cannot elevate the account that is currently being rejected.
The command is unknown
Check the edition and hosting mode. The Dedicated Server permission commands are not a universal chat API for every Bedrock session, Realm, or Java server. Use the world or Realm player controls for those environments, or consult the exact Java server implementation.

The player name is rejected or the wrong player changes
Re-enter the exact in-game name, including capitalization and punctuation. Avoid copying a display nickname from a launcher or chat overlay when the server expects the account’s actual player name. Confirm the result with the permissions listing or player controls before granting further access.
A file edit has no effect
The running Dedicated Server may not have reread the file. After saving a valid edit, issue /permission reload, then inspect the result with /permission list. If it still fails, check the configuration format and whether you edited the file used by this particular server instance.
The role changed but abilities look unchanged
Make sure the change was made in the correct world or Realm and to the correct account. Have the player reconnect, then test an action that distinguishes the intended roles. A Member or Visitor role is not equivalent to operator status, and a Java plugin rank is not equivalent to a Bedrock role.
Achievements stopped being available
In a Bedrock world, enabling Allow Cheats has a permanent achievement consequence for that world, even if you later disable cheats. This is expected behavior rather than a permissions-listing error. Keep an achievement-enabled world separate from a command-enabled administrative world when both goals matter.
You cannot change a Realm player
Only the Realm owner or an authorized player with sufficient permission can manage roles. Ask the owner to open the Realm’s player controls and make the change; a regular participant cannot promote themselves.
