A Valheim join code normally fails for one of four reasons: the host is using the Steam backend instead of Crossplay, the code was entered outside Join Game → Add server, a client or server is on a different game build, or Xbox crossplay is hidden by account settings. Crossplay servers use a relay and do not need port forwarding; Steam-backend servers require the configured ports to be reachable. Work through the checks below in order, and generate a fresh code after restarting the host session before changing router settings.

What a Valheim join code is supposed to do
Iron Gate’s Crossplay FAQ (February 7, 2025) describes the normal flow: start a server through the game or a dedicated server, open the pause menu, and copy the displayed Join code. The other player opens Join Game, chooses Add server, pastes the code, and submits it. The code identifies a server through Valheim’s Crossplay backend; it is not a replacement for a local IP address or a Steam-server search entry.

If the code is absent, rejected immediately, or worked earlier and now cannot be resolved, first close and restart the host session. Then open the pause menu again and copy the newly displayed code. A code tied to an earlier host session can be stale, so changing router settings before obtaining a fresh code can send you down the wrong troubleshooting path.
Fix the join code in the order most likely to work
1. Confirm that the host is actually using Crossplay
A join code is associated with Crossplay-capable hosting. A normal in-game host must start the session with Crossplay enabled where that option is offered. For a dedicated server, inspect the startup command: it must include the exact argument -crossplay when people on different platforms need to connect.

Iron Gate’s dedicated-server documentation (April 11, 2024) says -crossplay runs the server on the Crossplay backend and permits users from any platform to join. Without that argument, the server uses the Steam backend. A Steam-backend server is appropriate for a Steam-only group, but players on other platforms will not be able to discover or join it with a Crossplay code.
- Mixed-platform group: enable Crossplay on the host or add
-crossplayto the dedicated-server startup command. - Steam-only group: a Steam-backend server can work, but use its normal server connection method and networking requirements rather than expecting a Crossplay code to bridge platforms.
- Code missing from the pause menu: stop the host, verify the hosting mode, start it again, and check the pause menu for a new code.
2. Use the exact join path
On the joining device, follow this path exactly:
- Launch Valheim and open Join Game.
- Select Add server.
- Paste the host’s current join code into the code field.
- Submit the entry and wait for the server to resolve.
Do not paste the code into a server-name search box. Do not replace it with a local address such as 127.0.0.1 or another private IP. Iron Gate’s Crossplay guide says a Crossplay connection cannot use a local IP or loopback address; those addresses point back to the joining device rather than to the relay-hosted server.

The important test is whether the newly copied code is submitted through Add server, not whether an older saved listing remains visible.
3. Make every platform finish its update
Crossplay requires compatible client and server builds. Check the game’s update status on every participating platform, and check the dedicated server’s installed build as well. A join code can be correct while resolution fails because one device is waiting for a patch.
There is a specific current example. On October 15, 2026, Iron Gate announced Patch 1.0.20 and noted that the Mac App Store build had a small rollout delay. Until that build caught up, Mac App Store players could not crossplay with other platforms. If the host or joining player is on that store version, confirm that the patch has actually installed before treating the code or router as the cause.
- On each client, wait for the platform’s update process to finish, then restart Valheim.
- On a dedicated server, stop it cleanly, apply the matching server update, and start it again before copying a new code.
- When one platform is delayed, wait for that platform’s build to become current; changing ports will not make mismatched versions compatible.
Valheim 1.0 supports crossplay across platforms, but “supports crossplay” does not mean that an out-of-date build can join a current one. Version parity is a prerequisite for the code exchange to succeed.

| Backend | How players connect | Router requirement | Address limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Join code through Join Game → Add server | No router port forwarding; the service uses a relay | Cannot use a local IP or loopback address |
| Steam | Steam-backend server connection | Forward the configured port and the next port | Not a cross-platform join-code path |
For the Steam backend, Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents the default port pair 2456–2457. If the server configuration uses a different starting port, forward that configured port and the immediately following port instead of blindly forwarding 2456–2457. The forwarding rule belongs to the Steam setup; adding it to a Crossplay server is not a fix because Crossplay is designed to use a relay.
Before touching the router, verify the backend and regenerate the code. A Crossplay code that is entered correctly should not require the host to expose a local address. Conversely, a Steam-backend server without reachable configured ports can remain inaccessible even when the server process is running.
5. Check Xbox crossplay visibility
Iron Gate states that an Xbox player can join a dedicated server when Crossplay is enabled on both the Xbox and the server. On Xbox, parental-control settings can hide the Crossplay option. If the option is missing, inspect the account’s family or privacy controls and have the account administrator allow cross-network play where required by the console’s settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAfter changing the setting, restart the game and repeat the documented Join Game → Add server flow with a newly generated code. The server-side -crossplay argument and the console-side permission are separate requirements; enabling only one leaves the connection unable to proceed.
6. Regenerate the code after any host or server change
Restart the host session whenever you change the hosting mode, update the server, or recover from a failed start. Open the pause menu only after the server is running, copy the currently displayed code, and send that value to the joining player. This removes ambiguity between an old code and the server that is actually online.
If a code worked earlier in the day but no longer resolves, treat it as a session problem first: stop the host, start the same backend again, and test the new code before changing unrelated settings. Keep the test simple by having one joining player try the fresh code while the host remains in the active session.
Choose the setup that matches your group
Many “broken code” reports are really a mismatch between the desired platform mix and the selected server backend. Use this comparison before rebuilding a server.

| Setup | Platform reach | Network model | Persistence | Operational effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-game Crossplay host | Cross-platform, provided all clients are compatible | Crossplay relay; no port forwarding | Temporary host session | Low; host starts the world and shares a fresh code |
| Dedicated Crossplay server | Cross-platform, with Crossplay enabled | Crossplay relay; no port forwarding | Persistent dedicated server | Self-managed startup, updates, logs, and access |
| Steam-backend dedicated server | Steam users only | Direct Steam networking; forward the configured port and next port | Persistent dedicated server | Self-managed networking and server maintenance |
A persistent world does not by itself make a server cross-platform. Persistence is a hosting characteristic; Crossplay is a backend choice. If players use different platforms, select Crossplay first and then verify that the clients and server are on compatible versions.

The host cannot find a join code
- Confirm the session was started in a Crossplay-capable mode.
- For a dedicated server, verify that the startup command contains
-crossplay. - Restart the host or server, wait for it to finish starting, and check the pause menu again.
- If the server is intentionally Steam-backend, stop looking for a Crossplay code and use the Steam connection method with the required ports.
The code is rejected immediately
- Copy the code again from the current host session; do not reuse a message from an earlier session.
- Make sure the joining player used Join Game → Add server, not a name-search field.
- Confirm that no spaces, line breaks, or other characters were added when pasting.
- Check that both sides have finished updating, including any dedicated-server update.
The code is accepted but the server never appears
- Confirm the host is on Crossplay rather than the Steam backend.
- Do not substitute a local IP or loopback address; Crossplay uses the relay.
- Check Xbox crossplay visibility if the joining player is on Xbox, including parental-control restrictions.
- Regenerate the code after restarting the host and test it once more.
Steam players can join, but console or Mac players cannot
This pattern usually points to backend or version incompatibility rather than a bad paste. A server without -crossplay uses the Steam backend and is visible only to Steam users. If Crossplay is enabled, check every platform’s build. The October 15, 2026 Mac App Store rollout delay for Patch 1.0.20 is an example of one platform temporarily being unable to crossplay while other platforms were already updated.
Crossplay works but a Steam-only setup does not
Check the Steam server’s configured starting port and forward that port plus the next one, with the forwarding rule applied to the host machine. Iron Gate’s documented default is 2456–2457. This rule is specific to the Steam backend; it does not replace the -crossplay argument for a mixed-platform group.
What not to treat as a universal fix
Iron Gate’s cited documentation does not establish cache deletion, PlayFab-account resets, VPN changes, or any particular firewall product as a guaranteed remedy for a failed join code. Those actions may be relevant to a platform-specific symptom, but they should not replace the backend, entry-path, version, Xbox-setting, and networking checks above. Avoid changing several unrelated variables at once: doing so makes it difficult to identify whether the code, the server mode, or the platform build was responsible.
How to report a failure that survives the checklist
If the documented workflow still fails, submit an English support request or bug report with enough context for Iron Gate to reproduce the problem. Include:
- Every platform involved, identifying the host, server, and joining clients.
- The client and dedicated-server version numbers.
- Whether the server uses Crossplay or the Steam backend, and whether
-crossplayis present. - The exact error text and the point at which it appears: code entry, resolution, or connection.
- The date and approximate time of the failed attempt, including the relevant time zone.
- Relevant lines from the server log around startup and the failed join.
- Whether restarting the host produced a new code and whether that code was entered through Join Game → Add server.
That information distinguishes a stale-session problem from a backend mismatch, a version rollout delay, an Xbox visibility restriction, or a Steam port-reachability issue. It also gives support staff the exact conditions needed to investigate instead of receiving only “the code does not work.”
Quick Recap
Quick pre-join checklist
- Host mode matches the group: Crossplay for mixed platforms, Steam backend for Steam-only play.
- Dedicated Crossplay startup includes
-crossplay. - All clients and the server have completed the same current update.
- Host has restarted and supplied the newest pause-menu code.
- Joiner used Join Game → Add server.
- No local IP or loopback address was substituted for a Crossplay code.
- No port forwarding was added to a Crossplay server; Steam servers use the configured port and next port, default 2456–2457.
- Xbox Crossplay is enabled on both the console and server, and parental controls are not hiding the option.
