To brew every standard Minecraft potion, use a brewing stand fueled with blaze powder, start with water bottles, turn them into Awkward Potions with Nether Wart, and then add the effect ingredient. Redstone Dust extends a supported potion, Glowstone Dust strengthens one, Gunpowder makes it splash, and Dragon’s Breath turns a splash potion into a lingering cloud. The recipe tree below covers the 1.21-era vanilla effects, including Wind Charging, Weaving, Oozing, and Infestation.
Recipes are broadly shared between Java and Bedrock, but durations, level-II behavior, identifiers, and some delivery rules can differ. The Bedrock identifier list cited by Microsoft Learn is current to version 1.21.111; Java snapshot 26.3 also makes brewing recipes data-driven, so a datapack can change the normal tree.

How Minecraft brewing works
A brewing stand accepts three bottle slots, one ingredient slot, and blaze-powder fuel. The stand processes all occupied bottle slots together, so one ingredient can produce up to three potions at once. The normal recipe chain is:
- Fill glass bottles with water.
- Put the water bottles into the brewing stand and add blaze powder as fuel.
- Add Nether Wart to make Awkward Potions.
- Add one effect ingredient to create a named potion.
- Optionally add Redstone Dust, Glowstone Dust, Gunpowder, or Dragon’s Breath for a modifier or delivery change.
Most effect potions require an Awkward Potion as their base. Weakness is the important exception: a water bottle can be combined directly with Fermented Spider Eye in the normal recipe tree.

What each brewing ingredient does
| Ingredient or item | Role |
|---|---|
| Water bottle | Starting container for brewing. |
| Blaze Powder | Fuel for the brewing stand; it is also the Strength reagent when used in the ingredient slot. |
| Nether Wart | Converts water bottles into Awkward Potions, the base for most effects. |
| Fermented Spider Eye | Creates Weakness directly from water and corrupts several existing effects into negative counterparts. |
| Redstone Dust | Extends duration when that potion supports extension. |
| Glowstone Dust | Raises potency for effects that have an enhanced level. |
| Gunpowder | Converts a drinkable potion into a splash potion. |
| Dragon’s Breath | Converts a splash potion into a lingering potion. |
Step-by-step: brew a drinkable potion
1. Prepare bottles, water, and fuel
Place filled water bottles in the brewing stand’s bottle slots. Add blaze powder to the fuel slot. If the stand has no fuel, it will not begin processing even when the recipe is otherwise correct.
2. Make the Awkward Potion base
Put Nether Wart in the ingredient slot above the bottles. When the brewing cycle finishes, each occupied bottle becomes an Awkward Potion. Do not skip this step for the standard effect recipes: adding a normal effect ingredient to plain water generally produces no result.
3. Add the effect reagent
Replace the Nether Wart with the reagent for the effect you want. The complete chart below lists the required base and ingredient. Keep the bottles in place; the stand processes all three together.
4. Choose a duration or potency modifier
After the effect potion is finished, you can brew it again with Redstone Dust for a longer duration or Glowstone Dust for greater potency where the effect supports those variants. These are alternative upgrades rather than a universal promise that every potion can be both extended and strengthened.

Complete Minecraft potion recipe chart
The table names the normal vanilla input and reagent. “Awkward” means an Awkward Potion made with Nether Wart. Exact durations and level-II values are intentionally not fixed here because drinkable, splash, and lingering forms, as well as Java and Bedrock versions, can use different values.
| Potion | Base | Ingredient | What the effect does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Night Vision | Awkward Potion | Golden Carrot | Improves visibility in darkness and underwater. | Caves, oceans, and night travel. |
| Invisibility | Night Vision Potion | Fermented Spider Eye | Makes the affected entity visually invisible, although worn armor, held items, particles, and other detection limits still matter. | Stealth and avoiding direct attention. |
| Leaping | Awkward Potion | Rabbit’s Foot | Increases jump ability. | Crossing terrain and reaching higher ledges. |
| Fire Resistance | Awkward Potion | Magma Cream | Protects against fire and lava damage for its active period. | Nether trips, lava work, and emergency recovery. |
| Swiftness | Awkward Potion | Sugar | Increases movement speed. | Travel, combat positioning, and escapes. |
| Slowness | Swiftness Potion or another qualifying corruption base | Fermented Spider Eye | Reduces movement speed. | Defensive control or a splash attack against mobile targets. |
| Water Breathing | Awkward Potion | Pufferfish | Prevents the normal need to surface for air while active. | Ocean monuments, underwater construction, and exploration. |
| Healing | Awkward Potion | Glistering Melon Slice | Restores health immediately rather than over a timed regeneration period. | Emergency recovery and combat. |
| Harming | Healing Potion or another qualifying corruption base | Fermented Spider Eye | Deals immediate damage to entities affected by the potion. | Combat, especially as a splash potion; the interaction with undead targets requires care because healing and harming effects are reversed for undead. |
| Poison | Awkward Potion | Spider Eye | Deals periodic damage while active; normal poison does not reduce a living target below its usual minimum health. | Softening enemies before a fight or forcing them to retreat. |
| Regeneration | Awkward Potion | Ghast Tear | Restores health over time. | Long fights and recovery while moving. |
| Strength | Awkward Potion | Blaze Powder | Increases melee attack damage. | Close combat and boss encounters. |
| Weakness | Water Bottle | Fermented Spider Eye | Reduces melee damage dealt by an affected entity. | Defensive combat and the standard curing setup for a zombie villager. |
| Turtle Master | Awkward Potion | Turtle Scute | Provides strong resistance while imposing severe Slowness; the trade-off is the defining feature of this effect. | Absorbing damage when movement speed is less important. |
| Slow Falling | Awkward Potion | Phantom Membrane | Slows descent and prevents normal fall damage while active. | Bridges, towers, Elytra recovery, and cliffs. |
| Wind Charging | Awkward Potion | Breeze Rod | Applies the 1.21-era wind-charge behavior, producing a wind burst when the affected entity dies. | Combat experiments and farms built around the newer 1.21 effects. |
| Weaving | Awkward Potion | Cobweb | Applies the 1.21-era weaving behavior, including cobweb creation on death and protection from normal cobweb slowing. | Trap, arena, and mob- farm designs using cobwebs. |
| Oozing | Awkward Potion | Slime Block | Causes slimes to appear when the affected entity dies under the 1.21 effect rules. | Slime-focused combat or controlled mob spawning. |
| Infestation | Awkward Potion | Stone | Creates the 1.21-era silverfish infestation behavior when the affected entity is hurt. | Challenge maps, traps, and experimental farms. |
The four newer effects are tied to the 1.21-era vanilla tree. Their precise triggers and interactions should be checked against the target edition, especially when a world uses a release, snapshot, or datapack that changes effect behavior.

Fermented Spider Eye: corruption recipes and the Weakness exception
Fermented Spider Eye is not merely another effect ingredient. It changes an existing potion into a different effect when the base is one of the supported inputs. The practical paths are:
| Starting potion | Fermented Spider Eye produces | Why use the path |
|---|---|---|
| Night Vision | Invisibility | Turns improved visibility into a stealth effect. |
| Swiftness or Leaping | Slowness, where the recipe table supports that base | Converts a movement boost into movement control. |
| Healing, and other qualifying positive or damage bases documented by the edition | Harming | Converts an instant healing-style effect into instant damage. |
| Water Bottle | Weakness | This is the notable normal recipe that does not require Nether Wart. |
Use the exact base shown in the recipe list for your edition. A fermented eye does not turn every potion into a negative effect, and adding it to an unsupported base simply leaves you without a valid output.

Drinkable, splash, lingering, and tipped-arrow forms
Drinkable potions
The ordinary bottle is consumed by the player or another entity that can drink it. This form is best when you have time to prepare and do not want to affect nearby creatures.
Splash potions
Place Gunpowder in the ingredient slot with a completed drinkable potion as the base. The result is a splash potion that can be thrown. Impact location matters: the target closest to the impact generally receives the strongest application, while nearby entities can receive a weaker or shorter application according to the effect’s rules. Splash and drinkable versions should not be assumed to share an identical duration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLingering potions
Place Dragon’s Breath in the ingredient slot with a splash potion. The result creates an area cloud at impact rather than applying only to the first target. The cloud is useful for defending a doorway, marking a battlefield, or repeatedly affecting entities that pass through it. Lingering behavior and duration are distinct from both drinkable and splash forms.
Tipped arrows
In Java, eight arrows can be crafted around a lingering potion to make tipped arrows carrying its effect. Because edition support and behavior can differ, verify this recipe in the version of the world where the arrows will be used instead of assuming the Java recipe is universal.

Choosing potions by objective
Exploration and travel
- Night Vision: removes the need to place torches every few blocks and makes underwater visibility practical.
- Fire Resistance: the safest preparation for lava exposure and many Nether tasks.
- Water Breathing: lets you focus on underwater blocks, structures, and navigation instead of the air meter.
- Swiftness: shortens overland travel and helps you disengage from hostile mobs.
- Slow Falling: protects long vertical builds and gives time to recover from an Elytra mistake.
Combat
- Strength improves melee output, while Swiftness improves approach, retreat, and strafing.
- Healing is immediate recovery; Regeneration is better when you can remain active for a longer period.
- Turtle Master is a damage-resistance choice for holding a position, not a chase potion.
- Poison pressures living targets over time; Harming is an immediate burst and is commonly delivered as a splash potion.
- Weakness is useful when reducing an enemy’s melee threat matters more than dealing damage directly.
Building, farms, and 1.21 experiments
- Slow Falling is a practical safety net for towers, bridges, and elevated redstone work.
- Wind Charging, Weaving, Oozing, and Infestation enable newer challenge, trap, and mob-behavior designs. Test their triggers in a copy of the world because snapshot or datapack changes can alter a farm’s assumptions.
Redstone versus Glowstone: duration or strength?
| Choice | Result | Best when | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redstone Dust | Longer duration for effects that support extension. | You are traveling, mining, guarding a base, or want fewer reapplications. | It does not increase the effect’s level or damage. |
| Glowstone Dust | Higher potency for effects with an enhanced variant. | You need a stronger combat or utility result in a short window. | Not every effect has a stronger level, and the enhanced form can have a different duration. |
Choose the modifier from the job rather than automatically using the rarest ingredient. A long Fire Resistance trip and a short high-impact combat potion have different priorities.

| Topic | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Recipe source | Vanilla recipes exist in released versions, and Mojang’s 26.3 Snapshot 3 states that potion-brewing recipes are now data-driven, allowing datapacks to add or modify them. | Microsoft Learn documents Bedrock brewing mixes as a base potion input, reagent, and output. |
| Current reference point | Check the exact release or snapshot used by the world; a snapshot is not automatically the same as a stable release. | Microsoft’s potion-ID page identifies version 1.21.111 as its current table version. |
| Identifiers | Use Java identifiers when commands, loot tables, or datapacks require them. | Do not copy Bedrock numeric IDs into Java commands or vice versa. |
| Durations and levels | Drinkable, splash, lingering, and enhanced variants can have different values. | The same warning applies; verify the value for the Bedrock release rather than importing a Java chart. |
| Tipped arrows | Eight arrows around a lingering potion is the documented Java crafting pattern. | Check the installed Bedrock release before relying on the Java recipe or behavior. |
For a guide, command reference, or server wiki, put the edition and version in the heading. For example, “Bedrock 1.21.111” is more useful than a timeless claim that a duration or identifier works everywhere.
Troubleshooting failed brews
The stand does nothing
- Confirm blaze powder is in the fuel slot; an ingredient and bottles alone are not enough.
- Check that at least one bottle is filled with water or contains a valid potion base.
- Make sure the ingredient is in the top slot, not in a bottle slot.
You get no Awkward Potion
Use Nether Wart with water bottles. If the bottles already contain another effect, empty them or start a separate batch; Nether Wart is the first conversion step for the normal tree.
The effect ingredient is rejected
Read the chart’s base column. Golden Carrot, Sugar, Ghast Tear, and the other effect reagents normally require an Awkward Potion. Fermented Spider Eye only works on its supported corruption paths, while Weakness uniquely accepts a water bottle directly.

Redstone or Glowstone will not work
The effect may not support duration extension or an enhanced level, or the potion may already be in a form that does not accept that modifier. Try the unmodified drinkable version first, then apply the modifier appropriate to that effect.

The thrown potion behaves unexpectedly
Gunpowder must be applied to a completed drinkable potion to make a splash potion. Dragon’s Breath must then be applied to the splash potion to make a lingering potion. Do not reverse that order, and do not assume that a cloud’s duration equals the bottle’s drinking duration.
A recipe differs from a video or server guide
Check the edition, release number, snapshot status, and datapacks. Java 26.3’s data-driven system can modify recipes, and Bedrock documentation is versioned separately. A guide that omits those labels may be describing a different rule set.
Planning a compact potion kit
If you are preparing for a long expedition, make the base batches first: several water bottles, enough blaze powder to fuel every cycle, and Nether Wart for the standard effect tree. Then prioritize by risk. Fire Resistance and Slow Falling cover two of the most dangerous environmental failures; Night Vision and Water Breathing reduce the time spent managing visibility and air; Swiftness improves both travel and escape. Add Strength, Healing, or Regeneration when combat is expected.
For multiplayer defense, convert selected combat potions to splash form only after the drinkable batch is complete. That preserves a personal bottle when you need one and avoids accidentally throwing the only copy. Lingering versions are most valuable when a fixed area matters more than portability, since the cloud stays where it lands while a splash bottle is a single impact.
