Modern Minecraft has two different animals that older guides often blur together: an ocelot can be fed fish and become trusting, but it cannot be tamed into a controllable pet. A stray domestic cat can be tamed with raw cod or raw salmon. When the cat puts on a collar, it is yours and can sit, follow you, scare away creepers and phantoms, and sometimes leave a small gift after you sleep.

Ocelot or cat? The distinction that changes the whole process
Older Minecraft tutorials describe finding an ocelot and turning it into a cat. That was once correct. Cats arrived in version 1.2.1 in March 2012, when the game presented the jungle animal as a wild cat that players could track down and tame. Minecraft later separated the two systems: domestic cats now appear as their own village and swamp-hut animals, while ocelots remain wild mobs.

Microsoft’s current Bedrock entity documentation is explicit: “minecraft:ocelot_tame is only here for backwards compatibility purposes, ocelots are no longer tameable in Vanilla Minecraft.” Feeding an ocelot can change its relationship with you from wild to trusting, but it does not create an owner-controlled cat.

If your goal is a companion that follows commands, do not spend time trying to tame an ocelot. Search for a stray cat instead.

Where cats spawn in current Minecraft
Search villages first
The official Minecraft Mob Menagerie article identifies “well-populated villages” as the main place to find modern cats. A village with more activity gives you a better chance of seeing one while you search its paths and buildings. If you want a tameable companion, this is the most direct destination.
Check swamp huts
Cats also appear at swamp huts, where they accompany witches. A swamp hut is therefore another legitimate search location, although it is a more specialized destination than a village.
Do not use an ocelot location as a cat-finding shortcut
The historical jungle association explains why old videos send players into jungle areas, but it does not change the current cat process. A jungle encounter and a village cat are not interchangeable targets. Identify the animal before you begin: the creature you need for a pet is the domestic cat, not the wild ocelot.
How to tame a stray cat
Taming is a short process, but the approach matters. The cat must accept the food and display the collar before it counts as yours.

- Carry raw cod or raw salmon. Put one of these raw fish in your active hotbar slot so the cat can see that you are holding food.
- Approach slowly. Move toward the stray without rushing. Sudden movement can make a cautious animal retreat, forcing you to reset the approach.
- Keep the fish selected while you close the distance. The official instructions specifically call for holding the food as you approach, not merely carrying it somewhere in your inventory.
- Feed the cat. Use Minecraft’s normal interaction key for the fish. Continue offering raw cod or raw salmon as needed.
- Look for the collar. A collar appearing around the cat’s neck is the visible confirmation that taming succeeded. Until you see it, the cat is still stray.
- Choose its behavior. Use the interaction key to make the tamed cat sit, or leave it standing so it can follow you.
What success looks like
The collar is the reliable in-game signal. Do not treat a cat merely stopping nearby as proof of taming; the collar is what confirms the state change. Once it is visible, you can use the sit or stand interaction to decide whether the cat remains in place or travels with you.
If the cat keeps running away
- Slow your movement and avoid sprinting toward it.
- Make sure raw cod or raw salmon is selected in your hand.
- Do not substitute an ocelot for a stray cat; the two mobs have different systems.
- Continue feeding only after you are close enough to use the interaction key successfully.
How to befriend an ocelot
“Befriend” is the safer modern description because an ocelot does not become a tamed cat. The current Bedrock entity definition documents an ocelot temptation radius of 16 blocks and a trust probability of 0.33 per qualifying feeding action.
Step-by-step approach
- Hold fish or salmon. Keep the qualifying food selected in your hand.
- Enter its approach range. The documented temptation radius is 16 blocks, so begin the interaction from within that distance.
- Let the ocelot come toward you. Its behavior includes avoiding players and a
can_get_scaredtemptation behavior. Give it time instead of chasing it. - Avoid sudden movement. Turning quickly, sprinting, or closing the gap too aggressively can make the animal retreat.
- Feed it when interaction is available. Each qualifying feeding action has a 0.33 probability of producing the trusting transition documented by Microsoft.
- Stop expecting pet controls. Even after the ocelot becomes trusting, it does not gain the cat’s sit/follow-owner behavior.
What “trusting” means
Trusting is a relationship state, not ownership. It explains why feeding changes the ocelot’s behavior, but it does not provide the domestic cat’s collar-based taming result. You cannot use this process to obtain a cat that follows commands, guards a base, scares creepers, or brings sleep-related gifts.
Why repeated attempts may be necessary
The 0.33 figure is a probability for each qualifying feeding action, not a guarantee that the first fish will work. If the trust transition does not happen, maintain the same slow approach and try another valid feeding action rather than switching to a different taming method.

Raw cod and raw salmon are the practical items to prepare when your target is a village or swamp-hut cat. For an ocelot, the important point is not a special pet-food recipe but the distinction between feeding for trust and feeding for taming: the former is possible, the latter is not.
What a tamed cat can do
Sit or follow
A tamed cat gives you a simple positional choice. Make it sit when you want it to remain at a location, such as a base, and leave it standing when you want it to follow you. This is the core control difference between a domestic cat and a trusting ocelot.

Scare away creepers and phantoms
The official Mob Menagerie article says tamed cats scare away creepers and phantoms. That makes a cat useful around a home even though it is not a combat pet and does not replace ordinary lighting, shelter, or other survival precautions.
Occasional gifts after sleep
A tamed cat may bring a gift after you sleep. The gifts are described as small animal remains, so treat this as occasional flavor with a little utility rather than as a dependable way to collect a resource. The game does not present it as a predictable production system.

These names describe appearance variants of domestic cats. They do not turn an ocelot into a selectable cat skin, and the variant list does not alter the taming steps: approach with raw cod or raw salmon and wait for the collar.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Following an old “tame the ocelot” tutorial
This is the most consequential error. The old method reflects an earlier game design in which the jungle cat was the route to a pet. In current vanilla Minecraft, the ocelot-taming component remains only for backwards compatibility. Correct course by looking for a stray cat in a village or at a swamp hut.
Confusing trust with ownership
An ocelot that accepts fish is still not a domestic companion. If you need sit and follow controls, keep searching for the separate cat entity.
Approaching too quickly
Both practical procedures reward patience. The official cat instructions say to approach slowly while holding the food, and ocelot behavior includes player avoidance and a fear-related temptation behavior. Walk, pause, and let the animal close the final distance.

For a stray cat, use raw cod or raw salmon. For an ocelot, use fish or salmon as the documented trust food. If the target does not react, first check the animal’s identity and the item in your hand before assuming the mechanic is broken.
Leaving before the success signal
For cats, remain engaged until the collar appears. A cat that is merely nearby has not necessarily been tamed. For ocelots, do not wait for a collar at all: trust is the endpoint, and no collar or owner-follow state should be expected.
A practical decision checklist
- You want a controllable pet: travel to a well-populated village or swamp hut and look for a stray cat.
- You have found a domestic cat: hold raw cod or raw salmon, approach slowly, feed it, and verify the collar.
- You have found an ocelot: hold fish or salmon, stay within the 16-block temptation radius, avoid sudden movement, and feed it for a chance at trust.
- You need creeper or phantom deterrence: only a tamed cat provides the documented companion behavior.
- You are following a pre-modern tutorial: ignore its instruction to tame the ocelot and use the current cat process instead.
Why old guides still cause confusion
Minecraft’s cat history explains the mismatch. Cats were introduced with the jungle biome in version 1.2.1 in March 2012, and the early game described a wild jungle cat—better known as an ocelot—that players could track and tame. Modern Minecraft makes cats more common by placing them in villages and swamp huts, while preserving ocelots as a separate wild animal. A video or article that predates this change can therefore give perfectly accurate historical instructions that fail in a current world.
When checking any tutorial, look for the intended version and the animal it actually names. “Feed an ocelot until it becomes a cat” is historical advice; “feed an ocelot to make it trusting” and “tame a stray village cat with raw cod or salmon” describe the current distinction.
