The command shows the server’s installed-mod list. It is not necessarily the same list a joining player can download: Server-side and Universal mods can be offered automatically, while Client-side-only mods must be installed manually in the player’s server-specific ModsByServer folder.

The direct way to see installed mods
Vintage Story has a built-in server command for this job:
/moddb list
Enter it in the in-game server chat or in a console attached to the dedicated server. The server generates the list from its active mod database, so this is the most direct way to see what the running installation recognizes as installed.

You must be an administrator or have equivalent server-control privileges. A normal player who can join the world but cannot run server commands cannot use this command from the server.
Run /moddb list in server chat or console
- Obtain administrator or server-console access. Being able to play on the server is not, by itself, proof that you can execute administrative commands.
- Open the server’s in-game chat while connected with the required privileges, or attach to the dedicated-server console.
- Type
/moddb list, including the leading slash, and submit it. - Read the server-generated output. This is the formatted list of mods that the running server has installed and recognized.
Server commands begin with a slash. If the command succeeds, the result comes from the server rather than from a folder listing on your computer. That distinction matters when files exist on disk but are outside the directories the server scans, or when a file has not been loaded by the current process.
Why the live command is preferable
A static command page can lag behind a game release or a particular installation. The Vintage Story command reference itself warns that a long command list can become outdated as the game changes. The running server is therefore the final authority on whether moddb exists and which syntax it accepts.

Using the documented Docker wrapper
If the server is deployed with the documented Docker Compose wrapper, issue the command through the container rather than typing the ordinary chat form into a host shell:
docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list"
The wrapper’s server.sh command interface omits the leading slash when it forwards a command. In other words, use moddb list inside the quoted argument for this wrapper, not /moddb list.

Docker procedure
- Change to the directory containing the server’s Docker Compose configuration.
- Make sure the Vintage Story service is running and that your account can execute Docker Compose commands.
- Run
docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list". - Read the returned server output for the installed-mod list.
If the wrapper reports that the service, script, or command is unavailable, verify that this is the documented wrapper layout. A different image or management script may expose a different interface; in that case, use the server’s own console and check /help moddb on the live installation.
When the command is unavailable or its syntax differs
An error does not automatically mean that the server has no mods. It may indicate a permission problem, a version difference, or a command syntax change.
- Run
/help moddbin the server chat or console. This asks the running installation what it currently knows about themoddbcommand. - Open the in-game
.chbcommand handbook if it is available on that installation. Use the entry formoddbas a second, version-specific reference. - Follow the syntax reported by the live server rather than assuming that a static wiki page is authoritative for every release.
The command reference identifies /moddb list as the list operation, but the live help output is the appropriate check when a server has been upgraded, customized, or managed by a wrapper.

Cross-check the list on disk
A dedicated server normally has a data directory containing a Mods folder and a serverconfig.json file. Inspecting these files can explain why a mod appears in a folder but not in the server’s generated list.
Find the directories the server actually scans
Open serverconfig.json and locate the ModPaths key. This setting tells Vintage Story where it looks for mods. A file placed in a different directory is not confirmed merely because it has a mod-like filename; it must be in a path the server is configured to scan.
Compare files with the live list
- Record the directories named by
ModPaths. - Inspect each configured directory and note the mod files present in its
Modslocation. - Compare that file-level inventory with the output of
/moddb list. - If files were copied manually and do not appear in the command output, confirm that they are in a configured path and determine whether the server needs a restart or another supported reload before it recognizes them.
Folder inspection answers “what files are present and where?” The command answers “what the running server has installed and recognizes?” Those are related but different questions, so use the command as the primary installed-mod list and the filesystem as a diagnostic cross-check.

Joining players do not necessarily receive every item shown by the server’s installed list. Vintage Story can prompt a player to download server mods during the join process, but the automatic flow applies to mods tagged Server-side or Universal.
Server-side mods
A Server-side mod runs on the server and can be offered to joining clients through the game’s automatic download flow described in the server guide. Its appearance in the server’s list does not mean that a separate client copy will be visible in every interface before the player joins.
Universal mods
Universal mods are also included in the automatic server-to-client distribution described by the guide. A player can therefore be prompted to download them while attempting to connect, subject to the server and game identifying the files as required.
Client-side-only mods
Client-side-only mods are not automatically supplied by the server. A player who needs one must install it manually in the server-specific ModsByServer folder on that player’s client. This is the key reason a friend can report that the “server list” is missing a mod even though /moddb list shows it installed: the two lists describe different sides of the connection.
Use the right test
To test what a player will receive, have that player attempt to join and observe the download prompt. To test what the server has installed, run /moddb list with administrative access. Do not treat the join/download behavior as a complete inventory of server files.

“Unknown command” or a syntax error
- Confirm that you are sending the command to the server, not to a local operating-system shell or an unrelated client prompt.
- Confirm administrative or server-control privileges.
- Run
/help moddband consult the live.chbhandbook for the installed version. - If using Docker, use the wrapper form exactly as documented:
docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list", with no slash inside the quoted command.
The command returns fewer mods than expected
- Inspect
serverconfig.jsonand verify theModPathsdirectories. - Check that manually copied ZIP files are inside a directory listed by
ModPaths, rather than merely somewhere under the server’s data directory. - Determine whether the server requires a restart or supported reload after files were copied. A file that has not been loaded by the running process will not necessarily appear in its current list.
- Run the command again after the server has recognized the files.
A player cannot download a mod
- Check the mod’s category. Automatic delivery applies to Server-side and Universal mods, not Client-side-only mods.
- For a Client-side-only mod, place the required files manually in the player’s server-specific
ModsByServerfolder. - Do not use the player’s download prompt as proof that the server has no other mods; it reflects what the game identifies as transferable or required for that client.
The Docker command fails before Vintage Story responds
- Verify that the Compose service is named
vintagestoryin the documented wrapper. - Run the command from the directory containing the relevant Compose configuration.
- Confirm that the container is running and that the account can execute
docker compose exec. - If the installation uses a different wrapper, connect to its server console and use the native command form instead.

A practical administrator checklist
- Use an administrator account or an attached server console.
- Run
/moddb listfor the authoritative live list. - For the documented Docker setup, run
docker compose exec vintagestory ./server.sh command "moddb list"and omit the slash inside the quoted argument. - If syntax or availability is uncertain, run
/help moddband consult.chb. - Use
serverconfig.json, itsModPathskey, and the configuredModsdirectories to investigate missing entries. - Explain to players that automatic downloads cover Server-side and Universal mods; Client-side-only mods belong in the player’s
ModsByServerfolder.
The essential distinction
There are two different inventories people often call “the mod list.” The server inventory is the output of /moddb list and represents what the running server has installed. The client download inventory is what Vintage Story offers during a join, which is limited to the Server-side and Universal files identified as needed. When those inventories differ, that is normally a difference in scope rather than evidence that the command failed.
