It is built for Minecraft 1.16.5 with Forge. For a self-hosted server, install the matching Forge server, extract the archive into its own folder, run the included launcher, accept Mojang’s EULA if you agree to it, configure server.properties, and forward the server port to friends. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, Forge loader, and pack files. A managed Minecraft host can automate much of the Forge installation if you would rather not maintain the server yourself.

What Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse Pack requires
The CurseForge project by sneak is an exploration and combat/PvP pack for Minecraft 1.16.5 on the Forge mod loader. It is designed to turn the game into a zombie-survival scenario, adding the following systems:

The server download is a separate file named Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse SERVER.zip. The file record identifies it as a Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge server package, uploaded July 10, 2024, with a listed size of 464.9 MB. Downloading that server archive is preferable to trying to turn an ordinary client instance into a server because the archive is intended to contain the server-side distribution, configuration, scripts, and libraries together.
Choose between local hosting and a managed host
Decide where the server will run before installing anything. A computer at home gives you complete access to files and settings, while a managed service supplies a control panel and a public datacenter connection.

| Consideration | Self-hosted at home | Managed Minecraft host |
|---|---|---|
| Control | Full control of mods, configs, worlds, scripts, backups, and operating-system settings. | Control-panel access with some operations handled by the provider. |
| Network | Depends on your upload bandwidth, router, firewall, and whether your public IP changes. | Uses a datacenter endpoint; players connect to the address supplied by the host. |
| Maintenance | You maintain Java, Forge, backups, security, port forwarding, and updates. | The provider may automate installation, restarts, backups, and some updates. |
| Cost | Uses existing hardware but adds electricity and your own maintenance time. | Requires a recurring hosting charge; verify current prices and cancellation terms directly. |
| Scaling | Limited by the host computer’s available CPU, memory, storage, and connection. | RAM plans can generally be resized more easily, subject to the provider’s limits. |
One provider’s current listing recommends 6–8 GB of RAM for a smooth multiplayer experience with this type of pack. That is a provider-specific recommendation, not an independently tested minimum. Actual needs vary with player count, view distance, world activity, and other server settings. Do not treat 6 GB as a guarantee that every setup will perform well.
Keep the server and every client on the same build
Modded Minecraft is sensitive to version mismatches. The server and each player’s client should use:
Recommended Free Tools
- Minecraft 1.16.5
- The same Forge loader family and compatible Forge build
- The same Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse pack release
- The same mod files, configuration files, and dependency files
A newer Minecraft release or a different loader is not supported merely because it is newer. Do not mix a current client download with the July 10, 2024 server archive unless the files are from the same pack release. Keep a copy of the original archive so that you can restore a known-good installation.
Set up a local Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse server
1. Prepare a dedicated server folder
Create a new folder used only for this server, such as SneaksZombieServer. Do not place it inside a temporary downloads folder or inside a client’s instance directory. The server will create worlds, logs, configuration files, and libraries, so keeping those files together makes backups and troubleshooting much easier.
2. Install the required Java and Forge environment
Install the Java runtime required by your selected Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge server build, then install the matching Forge server distribution. Use the Forge installer for the server rather than launching a client-only Forge profile. The exact Forge build must be compatible with the files in the server archive; if the archive includes a launcher or Forge libraries, use those supplied components instead of substituting files from another pack.
On Windows, macOS, and Linux, verify that the command-line Java executable is available to the account that will run the server. If the launcher immediately closes, run it from a terminal or command prompt so the error remains visible instead of relying on a double-click.

Obtain Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse SERVER.zip from the pack’s CurseForge file record. Check that the downloaded file is the server archive, not only the client profile, and that its reported size is approximately 464.9 MB. A substantially smaller download may be incomplete or may be a different file.

4. Extract the archive without separating its contents
Extract the ZIP directly into the dedicated server folder. Keep the extracted mods, config, scripts, libraries, and any Forge files together. Do not run the server from inside the ZIP, rename individual mods, or copy only the visible mods folder into a different Forge installation. Those shortcuts commonly produce missing-dependency or configuration errors.
5. Inspect the supplied launch files
Look for the archive’s Windows batch file, shell script, or other launcher. The exact filename and the Java command can differ between releases and operating systems. Use the supplied launcher when one is present. If the distribution instead provides a Forge launch command, copy that command exactly from the extracted files and adjust only the path to Java or the working directory when necessary.
There is no safe universal command to paste from another modpack: Forge distributions can use different argument files, library paths, and memory options. Inspecting the archive first prevents a command that points at the wrong Forge installation or omits required arguments.
6. Start once, then handle the EULA
- Run the supplied launcher or the Forge server command from the server directory.
- Allow the first start to create its initial files. It may stop because an
eula.txtfile requires a decision. - Read Mojang’s EULA. Only if you agree to it, open
eula.txtand change the setting toeula=true. - Save the file and start the server again.
If no EULA file appears, read the console output for a Java, permissions, or missing-file error. Do not repeatedly edit configuration files without first identifying the message that stopped startup.
7. Configure server.properties
After the first run creates server.properties, stop the server cleanly before editing it. Change one group of settings at a time and keep a backup of the original file.
| Setting area | What to configure | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| Port | Choose the TCP port on which the server listens. | The same port must be allowed through the operating-system firewall and forwarded by your router when hosting from home. |
| Difficulty | Select the survival difficulty appropriate for your group. | Higher difficulty can make a zombie-focused pack considerably less forgiving. |
| View distance | Set how many chunks the server sends around each player. | Higher values increase CPU, memory, and upload demand; lower values can help a busy home server. |
| Gameplay options | Review spawn, PvP, command, and other options exposed by the file. | Some mod mechanics may assume particular vanilla behavior, so change settings incrementally and test. |
Do not edit world-generation settings after creating a long-running world unless you have a tested backup. Changing them mid-world can create abrupt boundaries or make later troubleshooting difficult.
8. Start again and read the complete console
Start the server after saving the configuration and wait for the message indicating that it has finished loading. The first launch can take longer while Forge builds caches and generates the world. Watch for missing mods, dependency errors, Java exceptions, a port already in use, or a failure to read a configuration file. Stop the server normally before making another change.

Install the matching client pack for players
Every player needs a client instance that matches the server. GDLauncher documents a quick-install workflow:
- Open GDLauncher and choose the option to create a new instance.
- Select a Forge instance for Minecraft 1.16.5.
- Open the instance’s Addons area.
- Paste the quick-install ID
#sneaks-zombie-apocalypse-pack. - Download the pack and its dependencies.
- Launch the instance once, then close it so the files finish generating before connecting.
Players using another launcher should install the same pack release and dependencies manually. Compare the client mods and config folders with the server’s supplied files when the server rejects a connection. Do not assume that two files with similar names are interchangeable; a single different mod version can cause a mismatch.
Let friends connect to a home server
Test locally first
Join from the same computer or local network before inviting people over the internet. This separates mod and Forge problems from router problems. If the local connection fails, fix the server installation before changing firewall or port-forwarding rules.
Allow the port through the host firewall
Create an inbound firewall rule for the port selected in server.properties, limited to the protocol the server uses and to trusted networks where practical. When the operating system asks whether Java may communicate on private or public networks, choose deliberately rather than granting unrestricted access without checking.
Forward the port on the router
On a home network, create a port-forwarding rule from the router’s external port to the server computer’s local IP address and the same server port. Give the server computer a reserved local address so the rule does not break after a reboot. Router interfaces differ, so use the labels supplied by your router manufacturer.
Give friends the correct address
Players outside your home network need your reachable public address and the port you configured. Do not publish a private address such as a local 192.168.x.x address to internet players. If your internet provider changes your public IP, the address may change and friends will need the new one. If inbound connections are blocked by your provider or network design, a managed host may be simpler than trying to work around carrier-grade restrictions.
Performance and memory decisions
The pack combines custom entities, animations, vehicles, guns, structures, and world generation. Performance therefore depends on more than allocated RAM. A faster CPU, adequate storage, a stable upload connection, and conservative view distance can matter as much as memory.

- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Begin with a modest view distance and raise it only after several players have tested the world.
- Watch server tick or lag messages while players explore and generate new chunks.
- Keep the server and world on fast, reliable storage with free space for logs and backups.
- Close unnecessary applications on a home host so Java receives predictable CPU time.
- Do not solve every lag symptom by assigning all system memory to Java; the operating system and disk cache still need room.
The published 6–8 GB figure is best treated as a starting point for a provider’s smooth-multiplayer recommendation, not a universal requirement. A small private group with conservative settings may need less, while many players, high view distance, or heavy exploration can need more.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backups, updates, and safe maintenance
Back up before every meaningful change
Stop the server cleanly, then copy the entire server directory or at least the world, mods, config, server.properties, and launcher files to separate storage. Label backups with the pack release and date. A backup made while the server is actively writing chunks may be incomplete, so do not rely on a live copy as your only recovery point.
Keep a known-good release
Do not replace individual mods because a player finds a newer file online. Record the pack version, Forge build, and any configuration edits. When updating, copy the original server folder to a new test directory, apply the update there, and load a backup world before replacing the production server.
Protect access
Use a server operator account only when necessary, avoid sharing administrative credentials, and restrict firewall exposure to the required port. Keep Java, the operating system, and router firmware maintained. If you allow unknown players, review whitelist and permission settings before opening the server publicly.

Common failures and their fixes
“Incompatible modded server” or a rejected connection
Compare Minecraft 1.16.5, Forge, the pack release, mod filenames, and configuration files on both sides. Remove duplicate mods from the client and reinstall the complete client profile rather than replacing one file at a time.
The launcher closes immediately
Run the supplied script from a terminal so the error remains on screen. Check that Java is installed for the correct account, that the script’s working directory is the extracted server folder, and that the archive’s libraries and argument files were not moved or renamed.
The server stops at the EULA stage
Open the generated eula.txt, review Mojang’s EULA, and set eula=true only if you accept it. Save the file in the same directory from which the launcher is running, then start again.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
“Address already in use” or a port error
Another program may already be using the configured port, or a second copy of the server may still be running. Stop duplicate processes, choose an unused port, and update the firewall and router rule to match.

The modpack is probably loading correctly; investigate the network path. Recheck the host computer’s local IP, router forwarding destination, firewall rule, public address, and whether the internet provider permits inbound connections. Test from a genuinely external network rather than from another device on the same Wi-Fi.
Missing structures, items, or custom zombies
Stop the server and inspect the console for a missing dependency or failed mod initialization. Confirm that the complete extracted archive is present and that the client did not load a different pack release. Do not delete world files before restoring a backup; doing so can permanently remove generated content.
When a managed host makes more sense
A managed service is useful when you do not want to maintain Java, Forge files, backups, firewall rules, or a home network. Look for explicit support for Minecraft 1.16.5 Forge and modpack imports, not merely a generic Minecraft plan. Before paying, check:
- Whether the panel can import the official server ZIP or install this exact pack
- Dedicated CPU resources and the provider’s memory allocation policy
- Automated and downloadable backups
- DDoS protection and the datacenter location nearest your players
- File-manager or console access for editing
server.properties - How resizing, cancellation, refunds, and data export work
Even with a managed host, players still need matching 1.16.5 Forge client files. Automation removes much of the server-side setup; it does not make an incompatible client compatible.
Final launch checklist
- The server archive is Sneak’s Zombie Apocalypse SERVER.zip, not only a client download.
- The server uses Minecraft 1.16.5 and a compatible Forge build.
- The archive was extracted intact into a dedicated folder.
- The supplied launcher or the archive’s own Forge command is being used.
- The EULA was accepted only after it was reviewed.
server.propertieshas the intended port, difficulty, view distance, and gameplay settings.- Every player has the same Minecraft, Forge, pack, mod, and configuration versions.
- The local connection works before internet players are invited.
- The firewall and router forward the selected port to the correct computer.
- A tested backup exists before world-generation or mod changes.
Once those checks pass, the pack’s zombie-focused weapons, armor, structures, vehicles, guns, custom enemies, and other additions are available through the same Forge world for everyone in the group.
