Build a vertical rectangle of regular obsidian, leave its opening empty, and ignite the lower inside edge with flint and steel. A cornerless 4×5 frame uses 10 obsidian; a full-corner frame uses 14. To make two portals connect predictably, convert only their horizontal coordinates: divide Overworld X and Z by 8 for the Nether, or multiply Nether X and Z by 8 on the return plan.

What a Nether portal needs
A working portal has four essential characteristics: an upright rectangular frame, regular obsidian in that frame, a completely empty opening, and fire placed inside the lower part of the frame. The portal blocks are created in the opening only after ignition succeeds.

- Frame material: regular obsidian. Crying obsidian is not a substitute for the frame.
- Shape: a vertical rectangle. Valid outer dimensions run from 4×5 blocks through 23×23 blocks.
- Smallest economical frame: omit the four corners and use 10 obsidian for a 4×5 outline.
- Smallest full-corner frame: fill all four corners and use 14 obsidian.
- Ignition: flint and steel is the reusable choice; a fire charge is a single-use alternative.
- Site: a clear, nonflammable area with enough room for a protected arrival platform.
The opening must be empty before you ignite the frame. Do not put temporary construction blocks, chests, decorative blocks, or anything else in that space when testing the portal.
Choose the frame size and style
Cornerless 4×5 frame
The smallest operational frame is four blocks wide and five blocks tall when measured by its outer dimensions. Its four corners are left empty, so it consumes 10 obsidian. Temporary blocks can support the top corners while you place the upper edge, then you can remove those supports before ignition.

This design is useful when obsidian is scarce. The missing corners do not prevent activation, provided the remaining obsidian forms the correct upright rectangle and the opening is clear.
Full-corner 4×5 frame
Filling the four corners gives the same outer dimensions but raises the cost to 14 obsidian. It is visually complete and can be easier to lay out because every corner is marked by a permanent block.
Larger rectangles
The game accepts rectangular frames up to 23×23 outer blocks. A larger opening does not change the ignition method: the frame still has to be upright, made from regular obsidian, and empty inside when you apply the ignition item. A material count for every larger size is not specified, so plan your inventory from the dimensions you intend to build rather than assuming the 10- or 14-block cost applies to them.
| Frame option | Outer dimensions | Corner treatment | Obsidian required | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Economical minimum | 4×5 | All four corners omitted | 10 | Saving obsidian while establishing a first route |
| Full minimum | 4×5 | All four corners filled | 14 | A complete-looking frame or simpler visual layout |
| Large portal | Up to 23×23 | Either valid frame style | Depends on the chosen dimensions | A wide entrance or a portal room |
Build a Nether portal step by step
1. Select and prepare the site
Choose a flat or easily cleared location with room on both sides of the frame. Keep flammable construction away from the ignition area, and leave space where you can build a landing platform or enclosure after the portal activates. A portal that works mechanically can still deliver you into a dangerous place, so treat the arrival area as part of the build rather than an afterthought.
2. Lay out an upright rectangle
- Mark a four-block-wide by five-block-tall outline if you are building the minimum frame.
- Place regular obsidian along the two vertical sides and the top and bottom edges.
- For the 10-obsidian version, leave the four corners empty. Use temporary building blocks to hold the upper edge while you assemble it if necessary.
- For the 14-obsidian version, place obsidian in all four corners as well.
- If you choose a larger rectangle, keep the same vertical orientation and stay within the documented 23×23 maximum outer size.
Check the frame from the side before moving on. A frame lying flat on the ground is not a valid Nether portal frame; it must stand vertically.

3. Clear the opening
Remove every block from the interior. The opening is deliberately empty at this stage: portal blocks are generated there by a successful ignition attempt. If a support block, decoration, or misplaced piece of terrain remains in the opening, clear it before trying again.
4. Ignite from inside the lower edge
- Equip flint and steel.
- Stand inside the frame near its lower edge.
- Use the flint and steel on the inside of the lower frame area.
- Wait for the portal blocks to appear across the opening.
Flint and steel is the practical default because it can be reused. If you do not have one, a fire charge can light a Nether portal, but each fire charge is consumed after one use.
5. Verify activation before entering
A successful attempt fills the opening with the portal effect. If nothing appears, do not keep clicking randomly; work through the failure checks below. Once the portal is active, finish the landing platform or enclosure and gather the supplies you expect to need in the Nether before stepping through.
Flint and steel versus a fire charge
| Ignition method | How to use it | Reuse | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flint and steel | Use on the inside near the bottom of the frame | Reusable | Routine building, testing, and relighting |
| Fire charge | Use it to place fire inside the frame | Single-use | Backup ignition when flint and steel is unavailable |
Both methods still require the same frame conditions. Changing the ignition item will not fix an upside-down, undersized, obstructed, or incorrectly built frame.
Prepare for the first trip
The portal itself is only the doorway. Build a protected arrival platform before entering, especially if the frame is in an exposed location. An enclosed landing room gives you a few seconds to orient yourself and reduces the chance of stepping directly into danger. Keep the approach and arrival areas clear enough to move, and light or enclose the landing area as far as your build allows.

The Minecraft Wiki achievement guidance puts the preparation decision plainly: “You need to build a nether portal, or find a ruined portal and fix it.” Its practical warning is to return immediately if you are not prepared for the Nether. In other words, activate the portal first if you must, but do not treat activation as a signal that you are equipped for a long expedition.
How portal linking works
Portal linking uses an eight-to-one horizontal scale between dimensions. The conversion applies to X and Z; Y is not converted by this rule.
| Trip you are planning | Coordinate operation | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Overworld to Nether | Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 | Overworld (800, 64, −240) targets approximately Nether (100, 64, −30) |
| Nether to Overworld | Multiply Nether X and Z by 8 | Nether (100, 64, −30) targets approximately Overworld (800, 64, −240) |
Write down the complete coordinates of the Overworld frame before you travel. Divide its X and Z values by 8, then build the Nether-side frame as close as practical to those converted horizontal coordinates. For a route planned from the Nether, multiply the Nether frame’s X and Z by 8 to identify the corresponding Overworld area.
Use the converted numbers as a target, not as a promise that the game will ignore terrain. The game also evaluates available portal locations and nearby portals. Matching Y by itself does not guarantee that two frames will connect to one another.

Let the game generate the destination
The simplest approach is to activate one portal and allow the game to create or select a destination in the other dimension. This requires less advance construction, but the resulting frame may not be where you expected. Record the actual coordinates of both portals after the trip so you can diagnose the route later.

Prebuild at converted coordinates
For a predictable highway or transport route, build the second frame near the converted X/Z target before relying on repeated travel. This takes more preparation but gives you control over the destination area and makes the eight-to-one relationship useful for long-distance movement.
| Approach | Preparation | Strength | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generated destination | Build one frame and travel | Fastest way to open a route | The arrival frame may be offset from your preferred location |
| Converted-coordinate build | Record coordinates, calculate X/Z, and build the second frame near the target | More predictable travel between known bases | Requires a second build and careful coordinate recording |
Fix a portal that links to the wrong place
- Record both frames. Note the X, Y, and Z coordinates of the Overworld and Nether portals you actually used.
- Calculate the target. Divide the Overworld X and Z by 8, or multiply the Nether X and Z by 8, depending on the direction you are planning.
- Compare the real and target positions. The farther the second frame is from the converted X/Z target, the more likely the route is to behave differently from your plan.
- Move or rebuild the Nether-side frame. Place it as close as practical to the converted target while keeping the arrival area usable and safe.
- Remove competing duplicates. If several nearby portals can serve the same trip, remove the frames you do not want competing for the destination.
- Test in both directions. Enter from the Overworld, return through the destination, and verify that each trip lands at the intended frame.
Do not assume that changing only the height will correct a route. Horizontal X/Z placement is the core conversion, while available portal locations and nearby frames influence the final selection.

Activation failures are usually structural or positional. Check the items below in order, correcting one issue at a time.
The frame is not upright
A Nether portal frame must be a vertical rectangle. Rebuild a frame that is lying flat or otherwise oriented incorrectly.
The frame is too small
The documented minimum outer dimensions are 4×5. Count the outside width and height rather than guessing from the opening. Expand any frame below that minimum.
You used the wrong block
Use regular obsidian for the frame. Crying obsidian cannot replace the required frame blocks for this construction.
A block is inside the opening
Clear the entire interior. Temporary supports are useful during assembly, but they must be removed from the opening before ignition.
The fire was placed in the wrong location
Apply flint and steel, or use the fire charge, on the inside near the lower frame area. A flame outside the frame does not substitute for igniting the portal opening.
Retry after each correction
Once you have corrected the frame, opening, or ignition position, perform the ignition action again. If it still fails, inspect the rectangle from every side and verify that every frame block is regular obsidian and that the structure is within the valid size range.
Java and Bedrock considerations
The core construction and ignition procedure is shared by Java and Bedrock play: build an upright regular-obsidian rectangle, leave its interior empty, and ignite it from inside near the bottom. Technical block-state documentation distinguishes portal-axis states between the editions, so record which edition you are using when diagnosing orientation at a technical level or documenting a build for someone else.
Do not turn an edition-specific axis label into a different building recipe. For ordinary construction, the reliable checks remain the same: vertical orientation, valid dimensions, regular obsidian, an empty opening, and fire placed inside the frame.
Quick Recap
A repeatable linking checklist
- Write down the Overworld portal’s X, Y, and Z.
- Divide X and Z by 8 to set the Nether target.
- Build the Nether frame near that converted horizontal location.
- Keep both arrival areas protected and easy to identify.
- Remove duplicate frames that compete for the same destination.
- Test the round trip and record the actual coordinates after both journeys.
Fast reference: build, light, and link
- Clear a safe, nonflammable site with space for an arrival platform.
- Build a vertical regular-obsidian rectangle at least 4×5 and no larger than 23×23 outer blocks.
- Use 10 obsidian for the cornerless minimum or 14 for the full-corner minimum.
- Remove every block from the opening.
- Ignite the inside lower frame area with flint and steel, or use a single-use fire charge.
- Before entering, prepare a protected landing area and the supplies you need.
- For planned linking, divide Overworld X/Z by 8 or multiply Nether X/Z by 8.
- If the destination is wrong, compare actual coordinates, move the second frame toward the converted target, and remove competing portals.
