Yes—you can host many domains on one VPS and one public IP. DNS sends each hostname to the VPS, then hostname-based virtual hosting selects the matching Nginx server block or Apache VirtualHost and serves that site’s files or application. The practical limit is the VPS’s CPU, memory, storage, database load, worker counts and traffic, not a fixed number of domains.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
This guide shows how to build isolated sites with Nginx, Apache, or Nginx in front of Apache; point DNS correctly; issue HTTPS certificates with Certbot; and operate the server without letting one site’s configuration or traffic disrupt the others.

How one VPS serves different domains
A browser request includes a hostname such as example.com. DNS resolves that hostname to the VPS public IPv4 address (and, when configured, its IPv6 address). The web server reads the hostname from the request and chooses a matching configuration:
- Nginx compares the hostname with
server_namein eachserver {}block. - Apache compares it with
ServerNameandServerAliasin a name-based<VirtualHost>.
The selected configuration points to a separate document root, forwards to an application upstream, and writes to that site’s logs. Apache’s documentation defines a virtual host as running more than one website on a single machine; Nginx uses the equivalent server-block model. This is hostname-based hosting, so a second public IP is not required for ordinary HTTP and HTTPS sites.

The hostname is matched after the connection reaches the VPS. That means the same listener can accept requests for many domains while the configuration decides which files, application socket, redirects and logs apply. A request for an unrecognized host is handled by the configured default server or first virtual host, so choosing that fallback deliberately is part of the security design.
What the shared IP does—and does not—mean
All sites share the VPS network interface and the operating system. They can nevertheless have separate files, Unix users, deployment credentials, databases, application sockets, logs and backups. A single VPS remains one failure domain: a kernel problem, exhausted disk, provider outage or firewall mistake can affect every site at once.

A busy database, runaway worker pool or full filesystem can still slow or stop unrelated domains. Treat separate sites as operationally organized, not as equivalent to separate machines or a security boundary by themselves.
Prerequisites before creating a site
- A running VPS with a supported Linux distribution and administrative access through SSH.
- A public IPv4 address. Add IPv6 only when the VPS firewall and web server are configured for it.
- For every domain, control of DNS records and the intended apex and
wwwhostnames. - One web server architecture: Nginx only, Apache only, or Nginx proxying selected applications to Apache.
- Backups of both website data and web-server configuration before making changes.
Decide whether each site serves static files, runs through PHP-FPM or another application process, or needs Apache behavior such as .htaccess. That choice determines the configuration template, process limits and logging you need. Keep a written inventory of domains, roots, users, database names, sockets and certificate names so a later change does not accidentally target the wrong site.
Keep application backends listening on localhost or a private network. Normally expose only SSH (preferably from controlled source addresses), TCP 80 and TCP 443 at the firewall. Do not expose an internal PHP-FPM, Node.js or Apache backend port to the public internet unless the design specifically requires it.
Point every domain at the VPS first
At your DNS provider, create an A record for each apex domain, such as example.com, pointing to the VPS IPv4 address. Create an A record for www.example.com as well, or use a CNAME to the apex when that fits your DNS setup. If IPv6 is configured end to end, add corresponding AAAA records.
Use the exact hostnames you will later place in Nginx server_name or Apache ServerName/ServerAlias. Decide which spelling is canonical, then redirect the alternate spelling at the web-server layer. Include every hostname that must work in the certificate request; a certificate for the apex alone does not automatically cover www.
Wait until DNS resolves to the VPS before requesting certificates. A wrong address, a closed port 80 or 443, or a hostname omitted from the web-server configuration commonly causes HTTP certificate validation to fail; treat these as troubleshooting checks rather than guarantees.
Confirm resolution and reachability
dig +short example.com A
dig +short www.example.com A
dig +short example.com AAAA
The returned address should be the VPS address you intend to use. During initial setup, an HTTP request with a hostname lets you verify routing before TLS is introduced:

Test from outside the VPS as well as from an SSH session. A local result can be misleading when a firewall, private DNS override or hosts-file entry differs from what public visitors use. If an IPv6 record exists, verify that the VPS actually accepts IPv6 traffic; an incomplete IPv6 path can make some visitors fail even while IPv4 works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHosting multiple sites with Nginx
On Debian- and Ubuntu-style systems, keep one configuration file per domain in /etc/nginx/sites-available/ and enable only the files you want through symlinks in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/. Other distributions may use a single /etc/nginx/nginx.conf with an included directory; preserve the same one-site-per-file organization.
1. Create an isolated document root
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/example.com/public
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/second.example/public
sudo chown -R deploy:www-data /var/www/example.com
sudo chmod -R u=rwX,g=rX,o= /var/www/example.com
Replace deploy and www-data with the deployment user and web-server group used by your distribution. Do not make every site world-writable. If an application needs a writable uploads or cache directory, grant write access only to that specific directory. Keep private environment files, deployment keys and backups outside public so a mistaken location block cannot serve them.
Use the same ownership convention for the second root, but do not reuse a site’s private deployment key or environment file. Separate roots make it easier to remove, restore or migrate one domain without searching through a shared tree.
2. Add one server block for each hostname
server {
listen 80;
listen [::]:80;
server_name example.com www.example.com;
root /var/www/example.com/public;
index index.html index.php;
access_log /var/log/nginx/example.com.access.log;
error_log /var/log/nginx/example.com.error.log;
}
Create a second file with the same structure but a different server_name, document root and log names. For a reverse-proxied application, replace the static-file handling with a location / and proxy_pass to an application socket or localhost port; keep that upstream bound privately.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →List both the apex and www names when they should reach the same site. If they should redirect rather than serve identical content, use a small separate server block for the redirect and make the canonical block explicit. Avoid broad wildcard names unless you intentionally operate a wildcard service; an overly broad pattern can capture a hostname intended for another site.
3. Enable the intended files
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/example.com
/etc/nginx/sites-enabled/example.com
sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/second.example
/etc/nginx/sites-enabled/second.example
Inspect existing symlinks and remove or disable the distribution’s default site if it could catch unmatched hostnames or display the wrong document root. Keep a deliberate default server for unknown Host headers rather than allowing an accidental site to answer. A default can return a simple error or an intentional landing page instead of exposing a real customer’s files.
4. Validate, then reload
sudo nginx -t
sudo systemctl reload nginx
nginx -t must report a successful syntax test before a reload. Reload applies the new configuration without the interruption associated with a full restart. If validation fails, fix the reported file and line, rerun the test, and leave the last known-good configuration active. Save a copy of the previous working file before large edits so rollback is a file replacement followed by another test.
5. Test each hostname and its logs
curl -I http://example.com
curl -I http://second.example
sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/example.com.access.log
sudo tail -f /var/log/nginx/example.com.error.log
Check that each response comes from the expected site, then request a known file unique to that document root. A 404 from the wrong root usually means a hostname typo or a server block that was not enabled. Per-site logs also reveal whether requests are reaching Nginx at all, whether an upstream is timing out, and whether one domain is generating unexpected volume. Rotate logs and monitor disk usage so verbose errors do not fill the shared filesystem.

Hosting multiple sites with Apache
Apache’s name-based virtual hosts use one <VirtualHost> per site. Exact module names, log directories and default paths vary by distribution, but the matching rules are the same.
1. Create a separate root and logs
sudo mkdir -p /var/www/example.com/public
sudo chown -R deploy:www-data /var/www/example.com
sudo chmod -R u=rwX,g=rX,o= /var/www/example.com
Use separate log files so an error on one domain is not hidden in a combined stream. Keep deployment credentials and environment files outside publicly served directories. Apply the same ownership and writable-directory discipline described for Nginx; Apache’s ability to read a directory does not mean the application should be able to write the whole tree.
2. Create the VirtualHost file
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example.com/public
ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example.com-error.log
CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example.com-access.log combined
<Directory /var/www/example.com/public>
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>
Repeat with a distinct file and values for every domain. AllowOverride All permits per-directory .htaccess rules; disable overrides and place equivalent rules in the VirtualHost when applications do not need them, reducing hidden configuration and filesystem lookups. Make sure the required Apache modules for the application’s rewrite, proxy or runtime behavior are enabled according to your distribution’s packaging.
Set an explicit ServerName for every site and include only the aliases that belong to it. A typo in ServerAlias can make Apache select another virtual host, especially when the default site is still enabled.
3. Enable, test and reload
sudo a2ensite example.com.conf
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
Disable the default site when it would answer an unknown hostname:
sudo a2dissite 000-default.conf
sudo apachectl configtest
sudo systemctl reload apache2
Use your distribution’s equivalent commands where a2ensite is unavailable. Always run the configuration test before reloading and retain the previous working file for rollback. Confirm each domain with a hostname-based curl request and inspect its own access and error logs after enabling it.
Choosing Nginx, Apache, or both
| Architecture | Configuration unit | Best fit | Operational trade-off | HTTPS termination |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nginx only | server {} block |
Static files, reverse proxying and uniform conventions | Lower complexity when every site follows the same pattern | Certbot’s Nginx integration edits the server block |
| Apache only | <VirtualHost> |
Applications that require .htaccess or Apache-specific modules |
Lower complexity when application documentation assumes Apache | Certbot’s Apache integration edits the VirtualHost |
| Nginx in front of Apache | Public Nginx block proxying to an Apache backend | Mixed legacy and modern stacks on one VPS | Highest complexity: two services, ports, proxy headers and two sets of logs | Usually terminate TLS at Nginx and proxy internally |
The mixed design is valid, but assign ownership clearly: Nginx should listen publicly on 80/443, while Apache listens on a private port or socket. Configure forwarding headers such as the original host, scheme and client address, and ensure the application trusts only the proxy you control.
Running both services is not automatically faster. It consumes memory and introduces two configuration syntaxes, two reload procedures, proxy timeout settings, duplicated logs and more places for a hostname or redirect to be lost. Choose it when a real application requirement justifies the extra layer; otherwise, an all-Nginx or all-Apache design is easier to review and recover.

Nginx integration
sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com -d www.example.com
Apache integration
sudo certbot --apache -d example.com -d www.example.com
The Nginx and Apache plugins locate the matching configuration, add the required TLS directives and reload the service. Review the proposed HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect and certificate names before accepting changes. For a site with additional hostnames, include each one explicitly with another -d. Request only names that resolve to this server and that you intend to keep serving; adding an unused alias creates another validation and renewal dependency.
With Nginx in front of Apache, terminate TLS at the public Nginx listener and proxy internally unless there is a specific reason to encrypt the private hop separately. Ensure the proxied application receives the original host and scheme, or it may generate insecure redirects or links. Do not expose Apache’s backend port merely because Nginx is forwarding to it.
Verify renewal without assuming it worked
Use the Certbot tooling installed on the VPS to inspect its renewal configuration and run a controlled renewal check. A dry run is a validation exercise, not proof that a future renewal will always succeed; continue monitoring certificate expiry and keep ports 80 and 443 reachable for the selected validation method.
After an automated certificate change, verify both the certificate names and the web-server configuration. Test the HTTPS URL for every alias, confirm that the intended HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect does not loop, and check the service logs. Schedule renewal checks as an operational task rather than relying on memory.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Isolation practices that prevent cross-site damage
- Filesystem: one document root, deployment user, environment file and writable-data directory per site.
- Processes: separate PHP-FPM pools, application users or service units when practical; set worker and memory limits.
- Databases: separate database users and credentials, with permissions limited to the application’s own database.
- Secrets: store keys outside public roots and restrict file permissions; never commit them to a repository.
- Logs: maintain per-site access and error logs, rotate them and alert on sudden growth.
- Backups: back up each site’s data and configuration separately, then keep copies outside the VPS.
- Host headers: define explicit names and a deliberate default response so an unknown hostname cannot expose another site’s files.
Separate Unix users and application pools reduce accidental access, but they do not protect against a privileged administrator, a compromised kernel or exhaustion of shared CPU, memory and disk. Review permissions after every deployment, and test restoration of both a site and its configuration from the external backup.
Capacity planning: there is no universal site limit
One VPS may serve a handful of demanding applications or many small static sites. A domain count alone says nothing about capacity. Size the server from measured workload and leave headroom for traffic spikes, operating-system updates, backups and certificate or deployment jobs.
Measure the resources that actually constrain you
- CPU utilization and load during normal and peak requests.
- Available memory and swap activity, including web workers, PHP-FPM or application processes and databases.
- Storage capacity, I/O latency and log growth.
- Database connections, query latency and cache hit rates.
- Worker counts, queue depth and upstream timeouts.
- Network throughput and bandwidth limits imposed by the VPS plan.
Benchmark the complete stack with representative pages and background jobs. Do not promise a fixed number of sites or infer performance from another provider’s machine; no authoritative universal site-count or performance figure exists.
Consolidating domains can be simpler than maintaining several servers, but there is no universal cost or savings figure. Provider plan prices, backups, management services, storage and bandwidth policies differ, and a larger shared VPS may cost more than a small separate instance for a high-traffic application. Compare the measured resource need and the operational value of a shared failure domain rather than choosing by domain count.
Common failures and recovery paths
The wrong site appears
- Confirm the browser requested the intended hostname, including
www. - Check DNS answers with
digand verify the address is this VPS. - Ensure the Nginx symlink or Apache site is enabled.
- Remove an unintended default site or make the default server deliberate.
- Run the web server’s config test and inspect the per-site access log.
For a proxy architecture, also verify that Nginx forwards the original host and that Apache has a matching ServerName. A backend that sees only an internal address or a different host can select the wrong virtual host even though the public Nginx block is correct.

One site makes others slow
Inspect memory pressure, CPU saturation, database load, worker counts and disk I/O. Reduce that application’s workers or concurrency, add caching where appropriate, move a database or high-traffic site to separate capacity, or split the workloads across VPS instances. - Inspect the site’s logs and verify application routing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can several domains use one VPS and one IP address?
Yes. Point each domain’s DNS records to the VPS, then use hostname-based Nginx server blocks or Apache name-based VirtualHosts to map each hostname to its own root or application.
Should I choose Nginx or Apache?
Use Nginx when sites are mainly static or reverse-proxied and you want one consistent pattern. Use Apache when applications depend on .htaccess or Apache modules. Run Nginx in front of Apache only when the mixed stack is justified, because it adds ports, proxy headers, services and logs.
Do I need a separate IP for every website?
No. Ordinary HTTP and HTTPS name-based hosting works with one public IP. Additional IP addresses are not required simply because you have additional domains.
How do I add SSL to every site?
First make each HTTP hostname resolve and route correctly. Then run Certbot’s Nginx or Apache plugin with a -d option for every hostname, such as the apex and www alias. The plugin updates the matching configuration; verify redirects, certificate names and renewal afterward.
How many websites can one VPS handle?
There is no reliable universal number. Capacity depends on traffic, page complexity, databases, worker processes, memory, CPU, storage and bandwidth. Benchmark the complete stack and leave headroom for spikes, updates and backups.
What happens if one site’s traffic overwhelms the server?
All sites share the VPS resources, so they can slow down together. Inspect CPU, memory, database load, worker counts and disk I/O; limit the noisy application’s workers, add suitable caching, or move that workload to separate capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy does the wrong domain or default page appear?
Check the requested hostname, DNS address, enabled Nginx symlink or Apache site, and the deliberate default configuration. In a proxy setup, also confirm that the original Host header reaches the backend.
Is hosting multiple sites on one VPS a complete security boundary?
No. Separate roots, users, credentials, databases, logs and application pools reduce accidental cross-site access, but the sites still share the kernel, filesystem capacity, network and failure domain. Keep backups outside the VPS and expose only required firewall ports.
The Bottom Line
One VPS can reliably host many domains when DNS, hostname-based routing, per-site roots and logs, firewall rules, HTTPS and operational limits are handled deliberately. Choose the simplest architecture that fits the applications, test every configuration before reloading, and size or split the server from measured resource use—not from a guessed site count.
