1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesShort answer: a missing eth0 after a kernel update is usually a name change, not a missing network card. Check ip link for a predictable name such as eno1, ens33, enp3s0 or enx..., then update the network profile that still refers to eth0. If no Ethernet device appears at all, investigate driver, firmware or hardware enumeration instead.

Why eth0 can “disappear” after an update
Traditional Linux naming assigned Ethernet devices in discovery order: the first interface was usually eth0, the second eth1, and so on. Discovery order can change when hardware, firmware, PCI topology, virtual-machine settings or drivers change. A device that was once eth0 could therefore become eth1, or receive a different name after a reboot.

The systemd project describes this policy as automatically assigning “predictable, stable network interface names” to local Ethernet, WLAN and WWAN devices starting with systemd v197. Typical results are:
| Example name | Usual basis | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
eno1 |
On-board firmware index | The first on-board Ethernet port |
ens33 |
Firmware or slot information | A device associated with a firmware-reported slot |
enp3s0 |
PCI bus and slot path | A device at a specific physical path |
enx<MAC> |
MAC address | A name derived from the device’s hardware address |
The kernel can enumerate the NIC successfully while the distribution’s network configuration still contains eth0. NetworkManager, systemd-networkd or ifupdown then tries to activate a device that no longer exists under that name. Red Hat administration guidance specifically warns that profiles retaining old names can fail to activate until they are changed.

Five-minute triage from a console
If the machine is remote and has no alternative management path, use a local console, hypervisor console, serial connection or recovery shell. Do not start by changing boot parameters; first record what the current boot sees.
- List interfaces in compact form. Run
ip -br linkA healthy Ethernet device may be listed as
eno1,ens33,enp3s0orenx....lois only the loopback interface and does not provide network access. - Show full link details. Run
ip linkLook for the interface’s state, MAC address and flags. A device can be present but administratively down; that is different from being absent.
- Check the kernel’s network-device directory. Run
ls -l /sys/class/netEvery name shown here represents a network interface currently registered with the kernel. If an Ethernet name is present here, the kernel has created the device even if no profile is using it.
- Check whether the link is simply down. Replace
eno1with the name you found:ip link set eno1 up ip -br linkBringing a link up does not configure an address, but it helps distinguish an inactive interface from a missing one.
- Record the hardware address. Run
ip link show eno1and note the value following
link/ether. You will use it to match a profile or a persistent naming rule.
Interpretation: if any non-loopback Ethernet name appears, treat the incident as a naming or configuration mismatch first. If only lo appears in both ip link and /sys/class/net, skip ahead to the driver and enumeration checks; changing a NetworkManager connection name cannot repair a device the kernel never registered.
Find out why the interface received its name
Predictable naming is based on udev properties. Inspect the live interface with:
udevadm info /sys/class/net/eno1
udevadm info --query=property --path=/sys/class/net/eno1 | grep '^ID_NET_NAME'
Replace eno1 with the name reported on your system. The most useful properties are:
| Property | Meaning | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
ID_NET_NAME_ONBOARD |
A firmware-reported on-board position | Useful when the motherboard labels ports consistently |
ID_NET_NAME_SLOT |
A firmware or hot-plug slot designation | Useful for slot-based hardware layouts |
ID_NET_NAME_PATH |
A name derived from the physical bus path | Useful when the PCI or platform path is stable |
If those properties are absent, the interface may use a MAC-derived name such as enx..., or a distribution-specific naming policy may be in effect. The output also helps explain why a name changed after hardware was moved, firmware settings were altered or a virtual NIC received a different path.

NetworkManager
List devices and saved connection profiles:
nmcli device status
nmcli connection show
The device list shows the live predictable name. The connection list shows profiles that may still bind to eth0. Display a profile’s settings with:
nmcli connection show "Profile name"
To attach an existing profile to the discovered interface, set its interface name and activate it:
Recommended Free Tools
nmcli connection modify "Profile name" connection.interface-name eno1
nmcli connection up "Profile name"
Use the exact profile name returned by nmcli connection show. If the profile was tied to a specific MAC address, verify that the recorded address still matches the hardware shown by ip link. A stale MAC match can prevent activation even after the interface name is corrected.
When several old profiles exist, identify the one containing the intended DHCP, static-address, gateway, DNS and VLAN settings before changing or removing anything. Do not delete a profile merely because its name contains eth0; it may contain the only copy of your static configuration.
systemd-networkd
Inspect links and the current state:
networkctl list
networkctl status eno1
Networkd matches interfaces through files ending in .network, normally stored in /etc/systemd/network/, /run/systemd/network/ or /usr/lib/systemd/network/. Open the applicable file and look for a section such as:
[Match]
Name=eth0
Change only the match to the discovered name, for example Name=eno1, while preserving the existing address, route, DNS and DHCP settings. Reload and reconfigure networkd:

sudo networkctl reload
sudo networkctl reconfigure eno1
If the file uses another match criterion, such as a MAC address, do not add a conflicting Name= line. Confirm which file matched by checking networkctl status eno1 and the service journal.
ifupdown
On systems using ifupdown, inspect /etc/network/interfaces and any files included from /etc/network/interfaces.d/. A stanza such as:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
must use the live name instead:
auto eno1
iface eno1 inet dhcp
Keep any static address, gateway, DNS, bridge, bond or VLAN lines in the stanza. Apply the change with the distribution’s normal ifupdown restart or by cycling the interface from a local console. Restarting networking over an active remote session can disconnect you.
Check logs before assuming the kernel is defective
Name changes, failed renames, driver probes and firmware errors are usually visible in the current boot’s logs. Search broadly first:
journalctl -b -k
journalctl -b -u systemd-udevd
dmesg -T
To narrow the output, search for interface-name fragments and hardware messages:
journalctl -b -k | grep -Ei 'eth|eno|ens|enp|enx|firmware|link|rename|network'
journalctl -b -u systemd-udevd | grep -Ei 'eth|eno|ens|enp|enx|rename'
Look for a successful device registration followed by a rename, a message that a requested name was already in use, firmware-loading failures, PCI errors, link resets or a driver probe failure. A line showing the interface under a new name supports the configuration-mismatch diagnosis; an error before any interface is created points to the driver or hardware path.

lspci -nnk
Find the Ethernet controller and read the “Kernel driver in use” and “Kernel modules” lines. If no driver is in use, compare the previous kernel’s loaded modules and boot messages before attempting a module change. Loading an arbitrary module can make diagnosis harder; use the module identified for that controller.
Use the previous kernel as a controlled comparison
Select the previous kernel from the bootloader’s advanced options and record the same evidence:
ip -br linkandls -l /sys/class/netudevadmnaming propertieslspci -nnk- Kernel and udev journal entries
- The active NetworkManager, networkd or ifupdown configuration
If the previous kernel shows an Ethernet device while the new kernel shows only lo, the comparison strongly suggests a driver, firmware or kernel-regression issue. If both kernels show the same device under different names, the update exposed a naming/profile mismatch rather than removing the hardware. Treat the older kernel as a diagnostic rollback: keep it available while you correct configuration and collect evidence, but do not conclude that every kernel update is faulty solely because the old name returned there.
Choose a persistent naming strategy
The preferred long-term fix is to configure the real predictable name in the network manager that owns the connection. This preserves the stability that predictable naming is designed to provide and avoids a second rename layer.
Use the distribution’s predictable name
After updating the profile or stanza, reboot once or restart only the owning network service during a maintenance window. Verify:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
ip -br link
ip address show eno1
ip route
Then confirm that the profile activates automatically on the next boot. This approach is usually best when scripts can be updated to use the current name and when the physical path or firmware identity is meaningful in your environment.
Create a deliberate systemd .link name
If administrators need a short, stable name that is independent of a long path-based name, create a rule in /etc/systemd/network/. For example, /etc/systemd/network/10-lan.link could contain:
Best Value
[Match]
MACAddress=52:54:00:12:34:56
[Link]
Name=lan0
Replace the example MAC address with the address reported by ip link. Match on a property that remains stable in your environment, and choose a name that no other device can claim. A low numeric prefix such as 10- makes the rule load before generic defaults; filenames are processed in lexical order.
systemd.link documentation warns that requesting a name such as eth0 can race with the kernel’s own assignment. A neutral name such as lan0 avoids that particular conflict, but you still must update the network manager to use it. The service managing the interface may need to be stopped and restarted for the new rule to take effect, and a reboot is the clearest way to test the complete boot sequence. Verify the result with ip link and inspect udev properties if the rule does not match.

Some unmaintained scripts, monitoring rules or appliance integrations may require eth0. Debian documents disabling predictable naming with the kernel parameter net.ifnames=0; it also documents biosdevname=0 where the biosdevname policy applies.
To test this temporarily, edit the boot entry in the bootloader, append the parameter to the existing Linux command line, boot once and check ip -br link. To make it persistent on a GRUB-based installation, add the parameter to the appropriate GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX or GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT setting, regenerate the GRUB configuration using the command provided by your distribution, and reboot during a maintenance window.
These parameters affect interface naming system-wide. They remove the stability benefits of firmware/path-based names and can reintroduce probe-order conflicts: adding a NIC, changing slots or changing firmware may cause a different device to become eth0. If you use this compatibility path, document the dependency and plan to migrate scripts to the actual predictable name.
Compare the available fixes
| Approach | Use it when | Legacy-script compatibility | Persistence and stability | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Update the active profile to eno1, ens33, enp... or enx... |
The NIC appears under a predictable name | Requires changing scripts that hard-code eth0 |
Uses the distribution’s intended stable naming | Existing automation may still reference the old name |
Create a MAC- or path-matched .link rule with a name such as lan0 |
You need a concise administrative name | Requires updating scripts to the chosen name | Stable while the match property remains stable | Name conflicts or an incorrect match can leave the device on its default name |
Boot with net.ifnames=0 (and, where applicable, biosdevname=0) |
An essential legacy component cannot be changed | Restores eth0-style naming | Less stable across hardware and probe-order changes | A different NIC can take eth0 after a topology change |
| Diagnose driver, firmware or enumeration | No Ethernet device appears in ip link or /sys/class/net |
Not a naming fix | Depends on restoring kernel hardware support | Changing profiles cannot help until the device is registered |
Evaluate every option against five questions: is the NIC enumerated, which service owns configuration, is the name based on stable firmware/path/MAC data, must an old script keep working, and will the result survive a future kernel or hardware change?
Troubleshooting branches after the name is corrected
The interface exists but has no IP address
Confirm that the correct profile is attached and that the interface is up. For NetworkManager, inspect nmcli device status and activate the intended profile. For networkd, use networkctl status <name> and inspect the matching .network file. For ifupdown, verify the stanza name and address method. If DHCP is configured, check link state and the DHCP client logs; if a static address is configured, check the prefix, gateway and route rather than changing the interface name again.
The name appears briefly and then vanishes
This pattern suggests a driver reset, firmware failure, PCI bus problem or a failed rename rather than an old profile alone. Capture journalctl -b -k immediately after the event, search for reset and firmware messages, and compare lspci -nnk with the previous kernel. Avoid repeatedly restarting the network manager until the kernel-level error is understood.
Two profiles compete for the same device
NetworkManager can retain several saved connections, including an obsolete eth0 profile and a newly created profile for eno1. List all profiles, inspect their interface and MAC matches, and set one intended connection to autoconnect. Preserve a copy of any static addressing, VLAN, bridge or bonding settings before removing an unused profile.
No Ethernet device is listed at all
Do not force a rename. Check the PCI controller with lspci -nnk, review kernel and udev logs for probe or firmware errors, and boot the previous kernel for comparison. If the controller is absent from PCI enumeration as well, investigate firmware settings, virtual-machine hardware assignment, slot seating or power before editing Linux network configuration. A USB or PCIe replacement is a hardware workaround, not part of the documented naming repair.

Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “eth0 missing” means the NIC is dead. Always inspect
ip linkand/sys/class/netfirst. - Restarting every networking service. Determine the owner and restart only that manager; competing services can create conflicting state.
- Editing the wrong file. A NetworkManager profile, a networkd
.networkfile and an ifupdown stanza are different configuration systems. - Deleting an old profile before copying its settings. Static addresses, routes, DNS, VLANs and bridges may be lost.
- Forcing
eth0with a .link rule. systemd warns that this can race with kernel assignment; use a unique name or retain the predictable name. - Testing a remote change without console access. Renaming or restarting an interface can terminate your session.
- Calling a naming change a kernel regression without comparison. Boot the previous kernel and compare enumeration, drivers, logs and profiles before assigning blame.
Final recovery checklist
- From a console, run
ip -br link,ip linkandls -l /sys/class/net. - If a non-loopback name exists, record its MAC address and inspect
ID_NET_NAME_ONBOARD,ID_NET_NAME_SLOTandID_NET_NAME_PATH. - Identify the active manager with
systemctl is-active NetworkManager systemd-networkd networking. - Change the manager’s profile or stanza from
eth0to the discovered name, preserving addressing and routing settings. - Restart or reconfigure only that manager, preferably from local or out-of-band access.
- Review kernel and udev logs, and use
lspci -nnkif the device is absent or unstable. - Use the previous kernel as a comparison when the new boot shows different enumeration or driver behavior.
- Choose a persistent predictable name, a carefully matched
.linkrule, or legacy boot parameters only when an unchanged script genuinely requires them. - Reboot once, verify the interface name, address and route, and test automatic activation before returning the machine to service.
