Minecraft Ice Caves are a new cave biome documented in Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3, a Java Edition snapshot published October 6, 2026. They can generate beneath colder Overworld biomes and feature Packed Ice, Calcite, Icicles, Strays, and a new zombie variant called the Frostbite. The snapshot notes do not confirm that Ice Caves are available in a full release or Bedrock Edition.
Where do Ice Caves generate in Minecraft?
The Minecraft Java Team describes the Ice Cave as “a new cave biome that can generate under the colder biomes in the Overworld.” That is the only location guidance in the Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 notes: they do not specify a Y-level, coordinates, surface landmark, seed, or guaranteed way to find one. Search beneath colder Overworld regions, but treat discovery as exploration rather than following a confirmed route.

Packed Ice and Calcite make up most of the biome. Its other documented features include:
- Icicles hanging from the ceiling, with large Packed Ice Icicles also able to generate on floors and ceilings.
- Occasional patches of Snow on the ground.
- Ores in pockets of Stone and Deepslate. The snapshot gives no ore rates or indication that this is a better place to mine.
- Ice Crystals that occasionally generate on the ground.
- No naturally generating Glow Lichen.
What mobs spawn in Ice Caves?
Normal cave mobs may spawn alongside Strays and Frostbites. The Minecraft Java Team’s snapshot introduction describes Frostbite as: “This frozen zombie variant is well adapted to colder conditions and can freeze players with its attacks.”

How Frostbites attack
Frostbites switch between melee and ranged attacks depending on how far away their target is and whether they have Ice Balls. A melee hit applies Freezing; at range, they throw Ice Balls. In Snapshot 3, an Ice Ball deals 4 damage to entities it hits, with damage scaling down as its velocity decreases, and it also knocks targets back. Frostbites drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls, can stand on Powder Snow, and are immune to freezing. Zombies and Husks that are inside Powder Snow transform into Frostbites.
How does Freezing work, and how can you respond?
Freezing makes an affected player shake and gradually become frozen as if in Powder Snow; the effect eventually deals damage. The snapshot says mobs take additional damage while Freezing, with a five-times multiplier for mobs vulnerable to freezing.
- Leather armor is protection, not immunity. It protects against Freezing as it does against Powder Snow, but does not stop the effect from being applied or remove it once applied.
- Watch Frostbite distance. The attack changes with range: closing in does not eliminate the melee Freezing threat, while keeping distance does not eliminate Ice Balls.
- Keep an eye above and below you. The biome’s Icicles can fall, so check ceilings and floors as you move.
Why are Icicles dangerous?
Downward-pointing Icicles naturally grow up to five blocks long. They grow only where there are no nearby light sources and outside the Nether. Falling Icicles damage entities; they cause extra damage to entities that land on them. Ice Crystals emit light, can be placed in any direction, and break if the block supporting them is removed.
Is there a special Ice Cave loot table or best equipment?
The snapshot documents ore pockets in Stone and Deepslate and says Frostbites drop Rotten Flesh and Ice Balls. It does not provide a special Ice Cave loot table, ore-generation rates, spawn rates, or a tested ranking of equipment. Leather armor’s stated benefit is limited to protection from Freezing; it should not be treated as a way to prevent or clear that effect.
