Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose a paid AI plan by matching its included features and usage limits to your actual work—not by comparing monthly prices or “Pro” labels alone. Chat subscriptions, coding tools, and developer APIs are often separate products. If you need all three, calculate their costs separately and check the provider’s current regional terms before buying.
Start by separating chat, coding, and API needs
These jobs overlap, but a plan that improves one does not necessarily pay for the others. A consumer chat subscription buys access to a provider’s chat experience and its plan-specific limits. A coding plan may add editor integrations, agents, code review, or usage credits. An API account is for using models in an application, script, or other integration, and is generally billed according to API usage.

Anthropic states: “A paid Claude subscription enhances your chat experience but doesn’t include access to the Claude API or Console.” Its Claude Help Center explanation makes the distinction explicit. OpenAI likewise publishes consumer ChatGPT plans and API pricing separately. Do not assume a chat subscription covers API calls.
Compare plans on the same decision axes
Prices and features below are examples from official provider pages retrieved October 7, 2026, not a complete survey of the market. They can vary by geography, tax, billing term, and later plan changes. Check the provider’s checkout and documentation before purchase.
#1 Best Overall
| Plan or service | Published price in retrieved source | What to verify for your workload |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Plus | $20/month, according to OpenAI’s ChatGPT pricing page. | Current local price, included chat usage, model access, and limits. |
| ChatGPT Pro | OpenAI’s pricing page lists $200/month. Its newer Pro tiers Help Center page describes Pro 100 at $100/month, Pro 200 at $200/month, and Pro 500 at $500/month. Confirm the tier offered in your account’s checkout. | Which tier is available to you, what its allowance covers, and how use is handled at the limit. |
| Claude Pro | $20/month or $200/year, according to Anthropic’s plan guide. | Whether standard usage capacity is sufficient; check the current plan terms. |
| Claude Max 5x / Max 20x | $100/month / $200/month, respectively, according to Anthropic’s plan guide. | Whether the higher usage capacity justifies the added recurring cost. |
| GitHub Copilot Pro / Pro+ / Max | $10/month / $39/month / $100/month, respectively, on GitHub’s plans and pricing page. | Included GitHub AI Credits, coding and agent features, and what consumes credits. |
| OpenAI API | Usage-based; model token rates and some tool charges apply. See OpenAI API pricing. | Current rates for the models and tools you expect to call, plus projected input and output volume. |
Use the table as a starting point, not as a declaration that similarly named plans are equivalent. For each candidate, compare these details:
- Main job: Is the plan primarily for chat, coding assistance, API integration, or a mix?
- Price and billing: What is the current price in your region and currency? Is there an annual option, and how do taxes affect checkout?
- Included usage: Which models and features are available, how are limits measured, and when do allowances reset?
- Workflow fit: Does it support your editor, inline completions, chat, code review, CLI, cloud agents, or repository tasks?
- Metering and overages: Which actions consume credits or other allowances? What happens when they run out, and can paid overage be disabled?
- API costs: Is API use included? If not, which separate account, model rates, and tool charges apply?
- Account requirements: Do individual, team, or organization policies and administration affect your choice?
Choose a plan for chat
For mostly conversational use, compare the subscription’s price with the models, features, and usage capacity you will actually use. A higher-priced tier is useful only if its added capacity or features solve a real constraint. If you only need occasional chat, start by checking whether a lower tier already covers that pattern; do not pay for coding or API features you will not use.
Rank #2
Claude’s plan guide characterizes Pro as standard usage capacity and Max 5x and Max 20x as higher-capacity options. That describes relative capacity, not a guarantee that a particular tier will cover every individual’s workload. Check current limits and how they apply to your account before subscribing.
Choose a coding plan by workflow and metering
List the coding actions you need before comparing plans. Basic inline completion is a different workload from repeatedly asking an agent to inspect a repository, make changes, or run longer tasks. Check whether the plan supports the relevant workflow and how those actions draw down its allowance.
GitHub Copilot
GitHub says Copilot chat, agent mode, code review, cloud agent, CLI, and Copilot Apps consume GitHub AI Credits. Its June 1, 2026 billing update also says code review can consume GitHub Actions minutes in addition to AI Credits. Check the current plan details for the credit amount included with each tier and what happens after those credits are used. For a workflow that relies on agents or code review, credits alone may not represent the full metering picture.
Claude Code
Anthropic’s Pro-plan help page says Claude Pro includes Claude Code access. That does not include Claude Console API use: Anthropic bills its consumer subscription and API separately. If you need both coding through Claude Code and API calls in an application, account for both products.
Rank #4
Budget API use separately
API spending depends on the models, volume, and features your software calls; a subscription price is not a useful substitute for that estimate. OpenAI’s pricing page lists rates by model and notes that some built-in tools have their own charges. It also says Responses, Chat Completions, Realtime, Batch, and Assistants APIs are not priced separately from model token rates. In other words, check the model’s current rates and any applicable tool charges rather than assuming the API endpoint itself has a separate fee.
Estimate input and output volume separately, then include expected tool use. For a new integration, begin with a modest forecast and monitor actual usage before expanding it. Rates and product terms can change, so use the provider’s current pricing page when calculating a budget.

A practical way to make the decision
- Write down the primary workload—chat, coding, API calls—and one secondary workload if you have it.
- Identify required features. For coding, specify whether you need editor completion, chat, agents, code review, CLI, or repository-level work.
- Start with the lowest tier that fits. Confirm it includes the features you need and enough usage for a normal month.
- Estimate metered use. For coding, account for agentic or premium-model actions that may use credits faster than basic completions. For APIs, forecast input, output, and tools separately from chat.
- Track actual usage over a representative period. Upgrade only when a specific limit or missing feature blocks your work.
- Check checkout and documentation before paying. Confirm current regional pricing, billing term, allowances, overages, and cancellation or renewal terms shown by the provider.
What the price comparison cannot tell you
The figures above are official snapshots retrieved October 7, 2026; they are not a complete market comparison, and plan names do not establish equivalent access or capacity. OpenAI’s public pricing page and newer Pro-tier help page describe different Pro price details, so use the tier information shown in your account’s checkout rather than relying on the older single-price listing. A current detailed comparison of Google’s paid Gemini plans and developer API pricing is not established here, so no Gemini prices or feature claims are included.
There is no universal winner without a defined workload. The lower-cost fit for occasional chat may be a poor fit for heavy agent use, while a coding subscription may do nothing to reduce a separate API bill. Compare the full expected monthly cost—subscription, likely overages, and API consumption—against the particular features and limits you need.
