Grass blocks have no crafting recipe. If you only need grass in a distant build, bring dirt near an existing grass block and let grass spread onto it.
How to collect a grass block
- Find a grass block in the Overworld. Grass blocks naturally generate in most Overworld biomes, according to Mojang’s Block of the Week: Grass.
- Use a shovel enchanted with Silk Touch to mine the block. Mojang identifies a Silk Touch shovel as a way to pick up a grass block. Without Silk Touch, mining it does not give you the grass block itself.
Silk Touch is the direct, predictable method when you have the enchantment. Grass blocks cannot be crafted, so there is no recipe to use instead.

Can you get a grass block without Silk Touch?
A less predictable possibility is an Enderman that is already carrying a grass block. The Minecraft Wiki says that killing such an Enderman makes it drop the block it is holding: Minecraft Wiki: Grass Block. This depends on encountering one carrying the block, so it is not a dependable substitute for Silk Touch.
How to spread grass onto dirt
If you need a grassy surface rather than a portable grass block, place ordinary dirt beside an existing grass block and allow time for the grass to spread. Mojang describes spreading as the way to get more grass blocks, since they cannot be crafted.

The Minecraft Wiki describes light and proximity conditions for spread, but exact mechanics can depend on edition and version. Its page also says coarse dirt and rooted dirt do not convert this way. For a remote build, extend a path of ordinary dirt from a nearby grass block and let the grass advance, rather than expecting grass to appear on its own.
