Zelle’s enrollment process does not accept credit cards, and the service now works through participating U.S. banks and credit unions. To use it, enroll in Zelle through your financial institution’s mobile app or online banking and use an eligible checking or savings account.
Why Zelle won’t accept a credit card
Zelle explicitly excludes credit cards from enrollment. You also can’t enter a credit card number in place of the email address or U.S. mobile number used to enroll. Zelle is linked to eligible bank accounts: both the sender and recipient need an eligible checking or savings account to send or receive money. How to enroll in Zelle through your bank

Check whether your bank or credit union participates. Search the official Zelle directory.

Open your institution’s digital banking. Sign in to its mobile app or online banking site, find Zelle, and follow the on-screen enrollment prompts. Zelle’s current guidance is to enroll through a participating institution’s banking service.

Enroll an email address or U.S. mobile number. Use the identifier requested by your institution and complete its verification steps. The precise screens and requirements can vary by bank or credit union.

If the identifier is already enrolled elsewhere, re-enroll it. Follow the new institution’s process to move the same email address or U.S. mobile number to its Zelle service. See Zelle’s instructions for changing an enrolled identifier.

What happened to the standalone Zelle app?
The standalone Zelle app stopped supporting sending and receiving money on April 1, 2025. It is not an alternative route for adding a card or using Zelle now; enroll through a participating bank or credit union instead. Zelle announced the change in October 2024 and explains it in its app-change FAQ.
If your bank doesn’t offer Zelle or enrollment fails
Your institution is not listed
Check the official directory for participating institutions. If your bank or credit union does not offer Zelle, you cannot enroll through it; Zelle’s former standalone app is no longer available for sending or receiving.
The bank app rejects your enrollment
Contact your bank or credit union. Zelle says the financial institution handles enrollment and payment support for customers using Zelle through its banking app. Account eligibility and enrollment requirements may differ by institution, so don’t assume a specific card or account will work across all banks. Some Zelle support guidance describes entering a Visa or Mastercard debit card linked to a U.S. bank account, with the cardholder’s details matching the bank’s records. Those directions relate to the discontinued standalone-app enrollment flow; they are not instructions for current bank-app enrollment. The standalone app’s transaction service ended April 1, 2025, so don’t use those steps to troubleshoot enrollment through your financial institution.
