Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled to launch on October 27, 2026, and Nintendo says preorders are live. If you own the digital Nintendo Switch version, you can preorder the Switch 2 Standard Edition for free in most territories through January 2027. The offer does not establish free eligibility for owners of the physical Switch cartridge.
How the free Switch 2 upgrade works
Nintendo’s offer is for people who already own the digital version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Eligible owners can preorder the digital Switch 2 Standard Edition for free through the end of January 2027 in most territories. Nintendo lists fees of 100 JPY in Japan and 30 NTD in Taiwan. The US announcement does not state the discounted prices for upgrading to Deluxe or Ultimate. Nintendo’s announcement sets out the offer and its regional exceptions.

Release date and preorder timing
Nintendo’s US announcement and store listing give October 27, 2026, as the release date. The date differs by format in Australia: Nintendo lists a physical release on October 27 and a digital release on October 28. That regional digital date should not be assumed for other territories. See Nintendo’s preorder announcement and the US store listing.
Nintendo Support’s general US policy says digital eShop preorders are charged in full seven days before release. Physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged immediately and ship one to three business days after release. Those terms describe Nintendo’s own US purchasing policies, not necessarily those of other retailers. Nintendo Support: Pre-Orders and Pre-Purchases.
