The most dependable renewable source is killing Endermen, but expert clerics, Nether piglin bartering, and a few generated chests offer alternatives. To use one, hold it and press your edition’s use button; you teleport to the point where the pearl lands. The teleport can injure you, and a bad landing over lava, in the void, or inside an unsafe cave can be fatal.

What an Ender Pearl does
An Ender Pearl is a throwable item. Mojang describes the basic control simply: “To use an Ender pearl, just hold it in your hand and press the use button.” The pearl travels toward the point you aim at; when it reaches an impact point, the player who threw it is teleported there.
- Pearls are stackable to 16.
- Teleporting can cause damage, so the item is both transportation and an emergency tool with a cost.
- The item has a short use cooldown, so repeated throws are not instantaneous.
- Using pearls can create an endermite risk, which is another reason not to throw casually in a crowded or unprepared area.
A pearl is not the same as an Eye of Ender. One pearl and one blaze powder craft an Eye of Ender. Eyes are used to locate a stronghold and, once enough are placed in the portal frame, enter the End.

Every way to obtain Ender Pearls
| Method | Where it works | Input or requirement | Yield information | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kill Endermen | Overworld, Nether, or End | Combat; Looting sword improves returns | 50% base chance for one pearl. Looting adds one pearl per level, up to four with Looting III. | Endermen are dangerous when directly looked at; the drop is chance-based. |
| Trade with a cleric | Villages | Reach expert cleric level and spend emeralds | Java: two-thirds chance that an expert cleric offers one pearl for five emeralds. Bedrock: the cited table lists one pearl for five emeralds from an expert cleric. | Trade availability is edition- and version-sensitive. |
| Piglin barter | Nether | Give adult piglins gold ingots; wearing at least one gold armor piece prevents normal piglin hostility | 4.27% chance of receiving three to four pearls per barter, according to the cited table. | Bartering is random and takes gold; other Nether hazards remain. |
| Generated chests | Strongholds, trial chambers, and a woodland-mansion fake-end-portal room | Find and open the relevant chest | Presence is documented; current exact percentages depend on the edition’s loot table and should be checked for your release. | Exploration is required and pearls are not guaranteed. |
1. Kill Endermen: the renewable route
Endermen are the main renewable source because they can continue spawning and dropping pearls as you explore or build a farm. The Minecraft Wiki’s 2026 reference gives a 50% base chance for one pearl per Enderman. A Looting enchantment improves the possible amount: each Looting level adds one pearl, with Looting III allowing up to four pearls from a single kill.
The percentage describes the drop roll, not a promise that every second Enderman will drop one. A short run can produce fewer or more pearls than the average suggests. If you need a large supply for Eyes of Ender, Looting is the most direct way to increase the return from combat rather than relying only on finding more mobs.

How to fight Endermen more safely
Endermen become hostile when you look at them directly. A practical shelter is a covered, two-block-high fighting space: the player can stand beneath the low roof while an Enderman is too tall to enter. Attack through the opening without staring at the mob’s face. This is standard gameplay advice, not a measured guarantee; Endermen can teleport, and the surrounding terrain still matters.
- Clear the area before engaging so a teleport does not place the Enderman behind another threat.
- Use a roof or other two-block-high cover when fighting manually.
- Collect dropped pearls promptly, especially near cliffs, fire, or water currents.
- Use Looting when pearl yield matters more than conserving durability or enchantment availability.
2. Trade with a cleric
Clerics provide a non-combat path once you have a functioning village trading setup. The cited trade table distinguishes the editions:
- Java Edition: an expert cleric has a two-thirds chance to offer one Ender Pearl for five emeralds.
- Bedrock Edition: the cited table lists an expert cleric selling one pearl for five emeralds.
These are edition- and version-sensitive values. Check the trade shown by the villager in your actual world rather than assuming that a Java result applies to Bedrock or that an older release has the same offer. You must level the cleric to expert before this pearl trade can appear, and each purchase consumes five emeralds for one pearl when the offer is available.
Trading is useful when emeralds are easier for you to obtain than Endermen are to fight. It also avoids the randomness of an individual Enderman drop, but it depends on villager access, a safe trading area, and the offer being present.

3. Barter with Nether piglins
Adult piglins accept gold ingots in exchange for a random barter result. The cited loot table gives a 4.27% chance of receiving three to four Ender Pearls from a barter. Because that is a probability per exchange, several gold ingots may produce no pearls, while one exchange can produce a useful bundle.
Wear at least one piece of gold armor before approaching ordinary piglins. Microsoft’s documentation states that piglins barter with players wearing gold, and a gold armor piece reduces normal piglin hostility. This does not make the Nether safe: avoid accidental attacks, protect yourself from lava and other mobs, and keep the gold supply separate from the pearls you are trying to obtain.
- Equip at least one gold armor piece.
- Carry gold ingots, not gold nuggets or finished tools, for the barter.
- Give an adult piglin one ingot at a time and wait for its return item.
- Collect each result before moving into a dangerous position.
- Repeat only while you have a safe escape route and enough gold to justify the random yield.
4. Search generated chests
Ender Pearls can appear in chests associated with strongholds and trial chambers. The cited item reference also lists a trapped chest in the woodland-mansion room that contains a fake End portal. These finds can provide pearls without combat, trading, or bartering, but they are exploration rewards rather than a renewable production method.
Do not treat an exact chest percentage as universal. Loot tables can differ between Java and Bedrock and can change with releases. The documented locations establish that pearls may occur there; the current table for your edition is the authority for the chance in a particular version.
How to throw an Ender Pearl
The interaction is simple, but the landing point determines whether the teleport helps or harms you.
- Move to a position from which you can see the intended landing surface.
- Put the Ender Pearl in your active hand.
- Aim at a solid, reachable location. A nearby floor, ledge, tower top, or safe side of a gap is preferable to an unseen destination.
- Press your platform’s use button. The pearl leaves your hand and travels toward the impact point.
- Wait for the teleport and immediately check your health, surroundings, and escape route before throwing again.
Always keep at least one spare pearl when travelling with a larger stack. A first throw can move you out of danger, but spending the last pearl removes your emergency option for the next fall, knockback, or blocked route.

Safe-throw rules that prevent deaths
Choose a known surface
Throw at a solid block or a ledge you can identify. Do not throw toward the void, lava, an unexplored cave opening, or a distant surface hidden by fog or darkness. Teleporting to an unsafe impact point can kill you even when the throw itself looked accurate.
Account for teleport damage
Landing from a pearl can hurt the player. Begin a long trip with enough health and food, and do not use a pearl as a substitute for healing. If you are already close to death, the damage from a successful teleport may be enough to finish the journey badly.
Use pearls for recovery, not only speed
A pearl can rescue you from a fall or knockback if you can see a safe surface. Practice the timing in a controlled area before relying on it over the void. In the End, pearls are particularly useful for reaching End City or Ender Dragon tower tops and for recovering from dangerous knockback; the Ender Dragon tutorial specifically recommends them for tower access and emergency recovery.
Respect the cooldown and endermite risk
The short use cooldown means a second throw cannot always follow the first immediately. Plan the first landing instead of assuming you can correct it at once. Pearls also carry an endermite risk, so avoid throwing repeatedly beside storage, villagers, or other areas where a surprise hostile mob would be difficult to handle.
Using pearls for Eyes of Ender and End progression
Once you have blaze powder, craft an Eye of Ender from one Ender Pearl and one blaze powder. Eyes serve two progression jobs:
- They guide you toward the stronghold when thrown during Overworld exploration.
- They are placed in the stronghold’s End portal frame to activate the portal and enter the End.
This makes pearls a progression bottleneck even if you never plan to use them for teleportation. A player who spends every pearl on emergency movement may still need to gather another supply for Eyes. Keep a separate reserve for stronghold searching and portal activation.

Java and Bedrock differences
The clearest documented difference is cleric trading: Java expert clerics have a two-thirds chance to offer one pearl for five emeralds, while the cited Bedrock table lists the five-emerald pearl sale as available from an expert cleric. Do not transfer a villager-trading plan between editions without checking the offer in game.
Technical behavior can also change between releases. Mojang’s Java snapshot 24w37a notes that thrown pearls load and tick chunks and continue across dimensions in that snapshot. That behavior is snapshot- and version-specific; it should not be presented as a rule for every current or older release. If a pearl behaves differently after an update, consult the notes for that exact edition and version.

Choose Endermen when you need a renewable supply
Combat is the route that can be repeated indefinitely and does not consume emeralds or gold. It becomes more attractive with Looting and a controlled two-block-high shelter. The trade-off is direct combat and a 50% base drop chance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose a cleric when emeralds are abundant
A developed village can turn emerald income into pearls without hunting Endermen. This is especially convenient before entering the Nether, but the offer must exist and the edition rules differ.
Choose piglin bartering when you are already operating in the Nether
Bartering can produce three to four pearls at once, but the 4.27% chance makes the result unpredictable. It is best treated as a bonus from gold you already planned to use, not as a guaranteed shopping list.
Choose chest exploration when the structure is already your objective
Strongholds, trial chambers, and the woodland-mansion fake-end-portal room can contain pearls. Searching them is sensible when you are already exploring, but it is not dependable enough to replace a renewable source.

Troubleshooting common problems
“My pearl did not give me the number I expected.”
Enderman drops and piglin barters are chance-based. A 50% drop chance does not guarantee one pearl from every two kills, and a 4.27% barter chance can produce a long run without pearls. Continue the chosen method or switch to a route whose input you can replenish more easily.
“The cleric does not sell pearls.”
Verify that the villager is an expert, then check the edition. Java uses a two-thirds offer chance in the cited table; Bedrock’s cited table lists the sale as available. Version changes can alter trades, so the offer displayed by your current villager takes priority over an old guide.
“Piglins attack while I am trying to barter.”
Check that at least one gold armor piece is equipped and that you are dealing with an adult piglin. Avoid opening nearby containers or attacking piglins, and build a protected barter area before bringing in a large gold supply.
“The teleport killed me or left me trapped.”
The landing point may have been unsafe, and teleport damage may have reduced your health. Throw only at visible solid surfaces, carry a spare pearl, and avoid using the item over lava, the void, or an unknown drop.
“A pearl behaves differently after an update.”
Check the exact Java or Bedrock release notes. The Java 24w37a snapshot documented chunk-loading and cross-dimension behavior for thrown pearls, but that note is not a universal promise for every version.

Practical checklist
- Use Endermen as the repeatable source; Looting III can raise the possible drop to four pearls.
- For villages, level a cleric to expert and verify the current Java or Bedrock offer before spending emeralds.
- For Nether bartering, wear gold armor and remember that three-to-four pearls occur only 4.27% of the time per cited table.
- Search stronghold, trial-chamber, and woodland-mansion fake-end-portal chests when those structures are already part of your route.
- Throw only at a visible, solid landing point.
- Expect teleport damage, a short cooldown, and an endermite risk.
- Reserve enough pearls to craft Eyes of Ender from blaze powder and complete stronghold and End progression.
