Use the item on a block to place fire, relight a completed Nether portal, ignite several fire-sensitive targets, or load it into a dispenser to fire a small fireball. It is not a hand-thrown weapon, and each direct ignition consumes the charge.

What a Fire Charge does
A Fire Charge is an ignition item. In your hand, use it on a suitable block and Minecraft places fire at that location, consuming one charge. On Java Edition for PC, this normally means right-clicking; on other platforms, use the equivalent action-button control.
Its main advantage over an ordinary hand-held fire starter is flexibility. It can recover a Nether portal, activate certain fire-based blocks and entities, and serve as ammunition for a dispenser. The item is consumed when used directly, so it is best treated as a limited supply rather than a permanent tool.

Ingredients and yield

The ingredients can be combined in either the 2×2 grid in your inventory or a full 3×3 crafting table. You do not need a particular workstation beyond one of those grids.
Crafting steps
- Collect one blaze powder, one coal or charcoal, and one gunpowder.
- Open your inventory crafting grid or a crafting table.
- Place the three ingredients into the grid so the recipe is recognized.
- Move the resulting stack of three Fire Charges into your inventory.
If the output does not appear, check that you used blaze powder rather than an unused blaze rod, and that the carbon ingredient is coal or charcoal rather than another item. A recipe also requires gunpowder; having only the Nether ingredients is not enough.
How to obtain the ingredients
Blaze powder
Blazes drop blaze rods. Blaze rods can be crafted into blaze powder, which supplies the first ingredient in the recipe. This makes blaze-fighting part of the normal Nether progression for players making Fire Charges from raw materials.
Gunpowder
Ghasts can provide gunpowder. Other game activities can also produce gunpowder, but the ghast route is the one specifically associated with the Nether recovery path for this recipe.

Coal or charcoal
Wither skeletons can provide coal. Charcoal is an accepted substitute for coal, so a player who has charcoal can use it without obtaining a coal item first.
The official Minecraft explanation links these drops to a practical emergency scenario: ghasts provide gunpowder, wither skeletons provide coal, and blazes provide rods that become blaze powder. Together, those materials let you make a charge to relight a portal after it has gone out.

Other ways to get Fire Charges
Crafting is not the only source. Current item-reference data lists Fire Charges in ruined-portal chests and in trial-chamber dispensers. It also lists piglin bartering, where one gold ingot can be exchanged for one Fire Charge.
These sources are version- and edition-sensitive. Java Edition and Bedrock Edition have separate loot and behavior records, and the exact contents, quantities, or probabilities can change between releases. If you are planning a farm or speed-run route, check the item and loot data for the edition and version running on your world rather than assuming that every listed source behaves identically.

Using a Fire Charge by hand
Lighting a block
- Put the Fire Charge on your hotbar and select it.
- Face the surface you want to ignite.
- Use the item on the block with your platform’s normal interact control.
- Confirm that fire appears, then move away if the surrounding area is flammable.
The item is consumed as soon as the ignition succeeds. A failed attempt can leave the charge in your inventory, but the result depends on the target and the game rules in your edition.

- A completed Nether portal frame
- TNT
- Campfires
- Candles
- Cakes that have candles
- Creepers
Whether a particular use succeeds still depends on the target’s state. For example, a Nether portal must already be a valid, completed portal frame; a Fire Charge does not replace the obsidian construction step.

When it works
A Fire Charge can relight a completed Nether portal. This is useful when a portal has been extinguished, including the recovery situation in which a ghast’s fireball puts out the portal’s interior fire.

Recovery procedure
- Inspect the portal and make sure the frame is complete and correctly shaped.
- Stand where you can target the portal’s interior or an appropriate frame-adjacent surface.
- Select a Fire Charge.
- Use it on the portal area.
- Wait for the purple portal field to appear before stepping through.
If nothing happens, first verify the frame rather than repeatedly consuming charges. Missing obsidian, an incorrectly shaped frame, or targeting a surface that cannot receive fire prevents portal activation. A charge can ignite a valid frame; it cannot repair a damaged one.

What a dispenser fires
When a Fire Charge is placed in a dispenser and the dispenser receives a redstone activation, it fires a small fireball. This is dispenser behavior, not a hand-thrown projectile: you do not throw Fire Charges from your inventory like a conventional item.
This makes the item suitable for remote ignition, defensive systems, traps, and other redstone mechanisms. The dispenser’s facing direction determines where the fireball travels, so orientation matters when you build the device.
Basic setup
- Place a dispenser facing the direction in which the fireball should travel.
- Open the dispenser and place Fire Charges in its inventory.
- Connect the dispenser to a redstone trigger, such as a button, lever, pressure plate, or clock circuit.
- Activate the circuit and observe the firing direction from a safe position.
- Adjust the dispenser’s position or the redstone timing if the fireball is not reaching the intended area.
Use caution around wooden builds, vegetation, TNT, and other flammable or explosive targets. A remote ignition system can affect blocks outside the area you intended to test, especially when repeated activations are possible.
Dispenser troubleshooting
- No projectile: Confirm that the dispenser contains Fire Charges, is connected to a powered redstone path, and is being activated rather than merely receiving an unpowered line.
- Wrong direction: Break and replace the dispenser while facing the desired direction, then test again.
- Unexpected damage or fire: Remove flammable blocks and test with a single pulse before connecting a clock or repeating circuit.
- Different behavior from a tutorial: Check the tutorial’s edition and game version. Dispenser details and loot data are not guaranteed to match across Java and Bedrock releases.
Fire Charges and firework stars
In current Java Edition recipe data, Fire Charge is the ingredient that gives a firework star the large-ball shape. This is a crafting use rather than an ignition action: the charge is consumed as part of making the star, and the resulting star can then be used in a firework recipe.

If your goal is simply to light blocks or recover a portal, reserve the charges needed for those tasks first.

Choose flint and steel when you expect to ignite many locations by hand. Choose Fire Charges when you need a compact emergency supply, want to use a dispenser, or already have the required Nether drops and do not want to spend tool durability.
Common mistakes and fixes
The recipe will not craft
- Check all three ingredient types: blaze powder, coal or charcoal, and gunpowder.
- Use a 2×2 inventory grid or a 3×3 crafting table.
- Do not substitute a blaze rod for blaze powder; convert the rod first.
- Make sure the crafting output is collected as three Fire Charges, not left in the result slot.
The charge does not light anything
- Retarget a block surface that can receive fire.
- For a portal, verify that the obsidian frame is complete and valid.
- Check whether the target is one of the supported ignition cases in your edition.
- Remember that a direct use consumes the item only when the ignition succeeds; inspect your inventory before trying again.
The portal still will not activate
A Fire Charge cannot rebuild missing frame blocks or correct an invalid shape. Repair the portal first, then use the charge on the interior or a suitable adjacent surface. If the portal was extinguished by a ghast, the charge provides the replacement ignition, not structural repairs.
A dispenser test is unsafe
Start with one charge and one redstone pulse in an open test area. Remove TNT and flammable blocks until the firing direction and timing are confirmed. Only then connect a repeating circuit or install the device near a base.

Planning how many to carry
Each recipe gives three charges, and each successful direct ignition uses one. Count the portal recoveries, hand ignitions, dispenser shots, and firework-star crafts you expect before deciding how much material to gather. A small stack is often enough for portal insurance; a redstone installation or repeated firework crafting consumes them much faster.
Keep a few charges in a secure chest near a Nether portal rather than carrying your entire supply into dangerous terrain. If you rely on bartering or chest loot, remember that availability can vary by edition and version, so crafting remains the predictable fallback when you can obtain the three ingredients.
