To use RCON on a Counter-Strike 2 dedicated server, set a unique rcon_password in the configuration the server actually loads, start the server with the RCON access option supported by your build (commonly -usercon), then connect with a Source RCON client using the server’s reachable address, RCON port, and password. External clients normally send commands such as changelevel de_mirage without adding the word rcon.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Counter-Strike 2 servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
RCON is powerful remote administration, not an encrypted management channel. Source RCON documentation warns that passwords and console commands are sent in plain text, so expose only the necessary network path and protect the credential as carefully as any administrator password.

What RCON does on a CS2 server
RCON (remote console) lets an administrator send dedicated-server console commands from outside the server process. You can inspect status, change maps, load Workshop content, manage gameplay settings, and perform maintenance without opening the server’s local console or logging in to a game client that is connected to the server.
Steam’s Source Dedicated Server documentation describes the server setting this way: “RCON Password: Set a password for remote access to the server.” The password is checked by the server before it accepts remote commands. RCON does not replace the server console; it provides a remote path to that console.

There are three command contexts, and their syntax is not identical:
- External Source RCON client: normally sends the bare server command, for example
changelevel de_mirage. - Connected game client console: traditional Source syntax uses an RCON address and password and places
rconbefore the remote command. Exact CS2 support depends on the server build and client settings. - Server console or hosting panel: usually accepts the bare command without
rcon; use the panel’s own help text if it differs.
Do not assume that a hosting panel’s “console” is native RCON. Some managed environments provide a panel console or a Fake RCON implementation and disable the server’s native RCON interface entirely.

- A running CS2 dedicated server and access to its startup command or configuration files.
- The address clients can reach: a public IP or hostname for Internet administration, or a private address when you use a VPN or internal network.
- The actual RCON listening port, plus permission to create or modify the required firewall and NAT rules.
- A Source RCON-compatible GUI or command-line client.
- A long, random password used only for this server.
Port numbers are configuration values, not guarantees. Steam’s Source Dedicated Server documentation lists UDP port 27015 as a documented default for the Source Dedicated Server interface, and a community CS2 RCON tool uses 27015 in its example. Your deployed server may use another port; verify the startup configuration, server output, hosting panel, and firewall rather than copying the example blindly.
Step 1: Create and protect the RCON password
Use a dedicated credential
Generate a long random password that is unique to this server. Never reuse a Steam password, operating-system administrator password, panel password, or a credential used on another game server. Anyone who obtains the RCON password can issue administrative commands accepted by the server.
Source RCON traffic is not encrypted. The protocol documentation explicitly warns: “Passwords and console commands are sent in plain text.” A person able to observe the network path could read both the credential and the commands. This is why a unique password limits the damage if the RCON session is exposed.
Keep the value out of public places
- Do not commit the password to a public or shared source repository.
- Do not paste it into screenshots, public support posts, or shared hosting tickets.
- Be cautious with shell history when the password appears in a launch command.
- Store it in a password manager or protected secret file and limit who can read it.
If you suspect the password has been exposed, replace it in the loaded configuration, restart the server if required by your build, and update every RCON client or script that uses the old value.
Step 2: Put rcon_password in the configuration the server loads
Using a server configuration file
Add the following line to server.cfg, or to the configuration file your startup process explicitly executes:

- System: Intel Core i5-13400F 2.5GHz 10 Cores | Intel B760 Chipset | 16GB DDR5 | 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home

rcon_password "your-long-random-password"
The important detail is not the filename; it is whether the running server executes that file. A correctly written line in an unused config has no effect. Check the launch command, startup script, container entrypoint, or hosting panel field that selects configuration files.
Keep the quotation marks when the password contains spaces or characters that could be interpreted by the console. Avoid leading or trailing whitespace inside the value. If the server log shows that the command is unknown or malformed, inspect the exact file path and the rendered startup command rather than repeatedly changing the client.
Using launch arguments
Some CS2 server builds accept the password as a launch argument. A Linux launch example reported for CS2 includes:
Recommended Free Tools
+rcon_password <mypw>
Launch-option syntax is build-dependent. Treat this as an example, not a universal requirement. Secrets placed directly in process arguments can be visible to other users through process listings or management tools, so a protected configuration file is generally preferable when your deployment supports it.
Step 3: Start the server with the required RCON option
Community CS2 setup examples commonly start the dedicated server with -dedicated and -usercon. A typical pattern is:
-dedicated -usercon
The exact options accepted by your build can change with updates. Valve issue-tracker material also shows a Linux launch line containing +rcon_connected_clients_allow true and +rcon_password <mypw>. Do not add that setting, or any other option, solely because it appears in an old example; check current server output for unknown-option or rejected-command errors.
After starting the server, read the console and log output. Confirm that:

- the intended configuration file was executed;
- the RCON password command was accepted;
- the server is listening on the expected address and port;
- no startup option was rejected; and
- the server reached its normal ready state.
Restart after changing startup arguments. A panel may save a new command without restarting the actual game process, leaving the old RCON state active.
Step 4: Make only the required network path reachable
Native RCON needs a network route from the client to the server. On a self-hosted machine, that usually means allowing the selected port through the host firewall and, if the server is behind a router, forwarding the port to the correct internal address. On a managed host, the provider may control those rules.
Because Source RCON sends credentials and commands in plain text, avoid exposing it more broadly than necessary:
- Prefer a private network or VPN for administration when practical.
- Restrict firewall source addresses to your administration IP ranges if they are stable.
- Do not forward an RCON port that is not required for remote administration.
- Use a separate rule for the game traffic and document which port is used for each service.
- Review firewall and NAT changes after a server migration or address change.
Do not infer the RCON port from the game server’s public listing. Verify the value in the server configuration and the hosting provider’s network panel.
Step 5: Connect with an RCON client
GUI client workflow
- Install or open a Source RCON-compatible client.
- Create a connection entry for the server.
- Enter the server’s reachable IP address or hostname.
- Enter the configured RCON port, not an assumed default.
- Enter the exact RCON password.
- Connect and wait for the authentication result.
The CounterStrike2RconTool documentation lists these same connection fields and also provides commands for updating connection information and executing server commands. It is community documentation, so confirm that its syntax matches the version of CS2 and the client you are running.
CLI and automation
A command-line client is useful for scheduled maintenance, deployment scripts, and repeatable operations. Keep credentials in a protected environment variable or secret store rather than embedding them in a script committed to source control. Test automation with a read-only command first, and make map changes or restarts explicit rather than allowing an unvalidated input string to reach the server.
Test with a harmless command
After authentication, issue a read-only status query supported by your server. If it returns expected information, try an administrative command during a maintenance window, such as:

- System: AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6GHz 6 Cores | AMD B550 Chipset | 16GB DDR4 | 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD | Windows 11 Home

changelevel de_mirage
An external RCON client normally sends that payload exactly as shown. Do not prepend rcon unless the particular client’s documentation says it requires the prefix.
How to change the map remotely
Standard map
Use the changelevel command followed by the installed map name:
changelevel de_mirage
The command changes the current level and can interrupt an active match. Warn players or schedule the operation for a maintenance window. If the server reports that the map cannot be found, verify the spelling, installed content, and the map name recognized by that CS2 build.
Workshop map
Community command references list:
host_workshop_map <id>
Replace <id> with the Workshop item identifier. For a collection, the same references list:
host_workshop_collection <collection-id>
Workshop behavior is version-sensitive. A Valve issue report shows a launch using +host_workshop_collection and reports workshop_start_map as unknown in that situation. Do not treat similarly named Workshop commands as interchangeable. Check the current server output and command help for the deployed build before relying on a startup or runtime command.
Do you type rcon before every command?
Not when using most external RCON clients. They authenticate through the RCON protocol and send a server command as the payload, so you enter changelevel de_mirage, not rcon changelevel de_mirage.
An in-game console can be different. Traditional Source client syntax uses an RCON address and password and then prefixes the remote command with rcon. CS2 support can vary by build and client settings, so follow the syntax documented for your client.

A server console or panel usually wants no prefix. The panel is already connected to the server console, so enter the bare command. If the panel displays a command prompt or help text, use that as the authority for its syntax.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The client cannot connect | Wrong address, port, firewall, NAT, or the server is not listening | Confirm the rendered startup settings, listening port, host firewall, router forwarding, and provider network rules. |
| Authentication fails immediately | The password differs from the loaded value | Check quotation marks, whitespace, capitalization, and whether a different server.cfg was executed. |
| The password line appears ignored | The config file was never executed or a later command overwrote it | Inspect startup output and the complete config chain; put the setting in the file the launch process actually loads. |
The server rejects -usercon or another option |
Build-specific launch behavior | Remove unsupported options, review current server output, and use the syntax documented for that deployed build. |
| Repeated attempts result in a ban | Failed authentication protection | Stop retrying, verify the credential and source address, then clear or wait out the ban according to your server or host controls. |
| The panel console works but an RCON client does not | The host may provide a panel console or Fake RCON instead of native RCON | Ask whether native Source RCON is enabled and which external port, if any, is exposed. |
| A Workshop command fails | Command availability or syntax changed with an update | Check current command help and logs; do not substitute workshop_start_map, host_workshop_map, and host_workshop_collection without confirming support. |
Check the server side before changing the client
When rcon_password “does not work,” the most common mistake is troubleshooting the client first. Verify in this order:
- Locate the exact startup command used by the running process.
- Identify every configuration file that command executes.
- Confirm the password line is in that path and contains no unintended whitespace.
- Confirm the server accepted the RCON-related commands in its output.
- Confirm the listening address and port from the server or host panel.
- Test from a permitted network with the exact same address, port, and password.
If the host replaces the native console, no amount of client-side prefix changes will enable native RCON. Use the provider’s supported console or move the server to an environment that exposes the required interface.
Choosing an administration method
| Method | Strengths | Trade-offs and checks |
|---|---|---|
| Native RCON | Works remotely with GUI or CLI tools and supports scripting. | Requires network exposure; Source RCON traffic is plain text; availability depends on the server build and host. |
| Hosting-panel console | Often avoids opening a public RCON port and may provide provider-side access or logs. | May not be native RCON, may lack protocol compatibility, and can have provider-specific command or audit behavior. |
| GUI RCON client | Easy connection management and interactive command entry. | Credentials may be stored locally; batch automation and review controls vary by client. |
| CLI RCON client | Good for scripts, scheduled jobs, and repeatable deployments. | Requires careful secret handling and input validation; command errors may be less visible. |
| Self-hosting | Maximum control over launch options, files, firewall, and updates. | You are responsible for patching, uptime, backups, network security, and recovery. |
| Managed hosting | The provider may handle patching, uptime, and network operations. | Native RCON, ports, launch options, and configuration-file access may be restricted or replaced by a panel console. |
Operational and security practices
Limit exposure
Use a private administration path where possible, restrict firewall sources, and remove temporary port-forwarding rules when maintenance is complete. Plain-text transport makes “it has a password” an incomplete security plan.
Rotate deliberately
Rotate the password after staff changes, suspected exposure, a host migration, or a leaked log. Change it in the configuration that is actually loaded, restart if the build requires it, and update automation together so you do not create a lockout.
Separate human and automated access
Do not share one credential casually among scripts, contractors, and players. Keep automation in a protected secret store and document which jobs can change maps, load Workshop content, or alter server settings.
Keep a recovery path
Maintain local console or provider-panel access before restricting network sources. If a firewall rule, password change, or failed launch option cuts off RCON, you need an alternate way to correct the configuration.
Quick Recap
A repeatable RCON setup checklist
- Generate a unique random password.
- Place
rcon_password "..."in the configuration file the running server executes, or use a launch argument accepted by your build. - Start with the required RCON option, commonly
-usercon, and include-dedicatedwhere your launch method requires it. - Read startup output for accepted settings, errors, and the listening port.
- Allow only the required firewall, NAT, or private-network path.
- Enter the reachable address, actual RCON port, and password in a Source RCON client.
- Run a harmless status query before changing the map or loading Workshop content.
- Use bare commands in external clients and the server console; use the
rconprefix only where the connected game client requires it. - Record the build-specific commands and host limitations for the next administrator.
