Build armor around broad protection and survival, choose Fortune or Silk Touch according to whether you want more drops or the original block, and keep separate items when two useful enchantments cannot coexist. The loadouts below cover survival, exploration, combat, building, and transport while noting Java–Bedrock and version differences.

What enchantments do and how you apply them
Microsoft describes enchantments as “a property of items in Minecraft that improve an item’s existing abilities or give them additional abilities.” An enchantment can increase damage, speed up a tool, reduce a hazard, extend durability, add mobility, or change how blocks and drops behave.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
There are four practical ways to apply one:
- Enchanting table: place an eligible, unenchanted item in the table, add lapis lazuli, and select one of the offered options. This is the normal starting point for gear that has no enchantments.
- Librarian villagers: trade for enchanted books, then apply the book to a compatible item with an anvil. This is the most controllable route when you need a particular enchantment or level.
- Anvil: combine an item with an enchanted book or another compatible item. The anvil also combines compatible enchantments and transfers durability, at an experience cost.
/enchantcommand: in worlds where commands are enabled and you have permission, apply a specified enchantment directly to a compatible held item.
Enchanting-table results are random within the available options. Books and anvils take more planning but let you assemble a precise endgame setup. Before spending levels, confirm that the enchantment works on your edition and item; Java and Bedrock do not always handle eligibility, effects, or exclusivity identically.

Armor loadouts for survival and exploration
Helmet
The general-purpose helmet combines Protection IV with Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Protection is the broad defensive choice; Respiration extends the time you can breathe underwater, while Aqua Affinity speeds underwater mining. Unbreaking slows durability loss and Mending uses experience to restore durability.

Thorns III is a situational addition. It damages attackers but increases durability pressure, so it is most useful when reflected damage matters more than maximizing time between repairs.
Chestplate
Use Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I for the chest slot. This is the armor piece that benefits most from a broad, always-on defense because it is worn in almost every situation.

Thorns III can add reflected damage, with the same durability trade-off as on a helmet. If you are preparing for one known hazard, a hazard-specific protection type—Blast, Fire, or Projectile Protection—can replace broad Protection for that specialized set. Treat those as alternatives for a particular threat, not as a reason to discard an all-purpose chestplate.
Leggings
Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I make the leggings a dependable general-survival piece. Swift Sneak III is the mobility option: it improves movement while crouching, which is valuable when navigating the deep dark or other situations where you must stay stealthy.
Boots
Boots carry the most travel-focused enchantments. The standard build is Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Feather Falling reduces fall damage; Depth Strider improves underwater movement.
Frost Walker II is an alternative movement build and cannot be combined with Depth Strider. Select it when temporarily turning water into a walkable route is more useful than swimming speed. Soul Speed III improves travel over soul sand and soul soil, but that movement comes with faster durability consumption, making Mending and spare experience especially important.

Tools: speed, yield, and block preservation
Pickaxe
Start with Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. The final slot is a strategic choice:
- Fortune III increases eligible drops, making it the mining choice when the objective is more material from a block.
- Silk Touch I collects supported blocks in their original form, which is useful for moving special blocks, building palettes, or postponing processing.
Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive. A two-pickaxe setup—one Fortune tool and one Silk Touch tool—is usually cleaner than trying to compromise, especially for a long-term world.
Axe
For a tool-oriented axe, use Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Add Sharpness V when the axe is also intended for combat and your edition permits that combination. Fortune III or Silk Touch I can support particular harvesting goals, but the same Fortune-versus-Silk-Touch decision applies: increased drops and original-block collection are different jobs.
Shovel and hoe
Efficiency V, Unbreaking III, and Mending I are the reliable bases for both tools. Add Silk Touch when you need to collect a supported block intact, or Fortune when the relevant crop or block produces more useful drops with it. Eligibility differs by edition and by block, so verify the current rules before spending an expensive book on a specialized tool.

Sword
Sharpness V, Looting III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I form the general sword build. Sharpness is the broad damage choice, while Looting improves drops from eligible defeated mobs.
Fire Aspect II adds burning damage and Knockback II changes enemy spacing; both are preference-dependent additions rather than mandatory upgrades. In Java Edition, Sweeping Edge III improves the sword’s sweeping attack and is a useful crowd-fighting option.

Sharpness is not the best answer for every target. Smite V is stronger for undead-focused combat, and Bane of Arthropods V is the specialized choice for arthropod-focused combat. These replace Sharpness rather than being added alongside it, so a dedicated combat sword may be worthwhile if you regularly fight one category of mob.
Bow
Use Power V and Unbreaking III as the damage and durability foundation. Then choose between Infinity I and Mending I. Infinity reduces consumption of ordinary arrows, making it convenient for routine ranged combat; Mending repairs the bow with experience, providing renewable durability. In normal Java survival, the two are mutually exclusive, so the decision is convenience versus repairability.

Flame I adds burning damage and Punch II adds knockback. They are optional and should be selected according to whether you value damage-over-time or distance control.
Crossbow
Quick Charge III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I provide fast reloads and sustainable durability. Choose one of the two defining payload enchantments:
- Multishot fires multiple projectiles and is the crowd-control choice.
- Piercing IV is the line-shot choice and can pierce shields.
Multishot and Piercing are mutually exclusive. Keep separate crossbows if you use both roles.
Trident
Impaling V supplies the damage-oriented part of the build where its target rules apply. The mobility and return enchantments determine the trident’s role:

- Loyalty III returns the thrown trident, making it the practical ranged-weapon option.
- Channeling I works with thunderstorms to call lightning, so it pairs naturally with a Loyalty trident.
- Riptide III launches you through water or rain and cannot be combined with Loyalty. It is a movement tool rather than a conventional returning projectile.
A Loyalty-and-Channeling trident plus a separate Riptide trident covers these jobs better than forcing one item to do both.
Utility equipment
Fishing rod
Luck of the Sea III, Lure III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I improve the fishing experience while keeping the rod usable over time. Luck of the Sea affects the quality of catches, Lure reduces waiting, and the durability pair limits interruptions for repairs.
Shield
Unbreaking III and Mending I are the useful shield upgrades. They make repeated blocking less costly and let experience restore durability. Shields do not need a long list of combat enchantments; reliable uptime is the objective.
Elytra
Use Unbreaking III and Mending I. Flight consumes durability, so slowing wear and repairing with experience directly extend each flight session. Carrying a backup or a repair plan is still sensible for long trips.
Mace and newer weapons
Newer weapons such as the mace require edition and version checking before you choose a definitive enchantment package. Rules can change as a weapon moves from one release to another, and a list written for an older version may show enchantments that are unavailable, renamed, or restricted in your world. Consult the current official enchantment list and your edition’s item rules rather than copying an old table.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between conflicting enchantments
Most difficult decisions are not about maximum level; they are about choosing one job over another. Use these four questions:
Best Value
- Do you need general or specialized damage? Sharpness covers ordinary combat, while Smite and Bane of Arthropods trade general coverage for power against a narrower mob group.
- Do you want more drops or the block itself? Fortune increases eligible yields; Silk Touch preserves supported blocks. Because they cannot coexist on one tool, plan for two tools if both outcomes matter.
- Is mobility more valuable than conventional weapon use? Riptide turns a trident into a water/rain movement device; Loyalty and Channeling make another trident a returning ranged and storm tool.
- Is convenience more important than renewable repair? Infinity saves ordinary arrows, whereas Mending restores a bow with experience. The same durability logic explains why Unbreaking and Mending appear on most long-term gear.
When two valuable functions are mutually exclusive, separate items are usually more efficient than repeatedly rebuilding one item. Label the tools in an anvil or storage system so the correct one is available before an expedition.
A practical enchanting workflow
- Define the item’s job. Decide whether it is general survival gear, a hazard-specific backup, a mining tool, a combat weapon, or a movement item.
- Check edition and version. Confirm that every planned enchantment is eligible for the item and that any incompatibility applies in your edition. This matters particularly for Java-versus-Bedrock behavior, trident rules, Sweeping Edge, the bow choice, and newer weapons.
- Secure the base item. Use the material and durability level appropriate to the job before investing in books or an anvil combination.
- Collect books deliberately. Librarian trades and other book sources let you target exact levels instead of accepting a random table result.
- Combine in a sensible order. Apply compatible books and items with an anvil while watching the experience cost. Combining related books before putting the final book on valuable gear can reduce unnecessary work, but always compare the displayed cost in your current version.
- Finish durability protection. Add Unbreaking and Mending to equipment that will be used repeatedly, then repair it with experience before a long trip.
- Test specialized gear safely. Try a new movement or combat setup in a controlled area before taking it into the Nether, deep dark, ocean, or a boss fight.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Putting Fortune and Silk Touch on the same plan: they cannot share one item. Keep two pickaxes, or decide which result you need before mining.
- Assuming every protection type belongs on one armor piece: broad Protection is the normal survival choice; hazard-specific variants are alternatives for a specialized set.
- Using Frost Walker when you need fast swimming: Frost Walker and Depth Strider cannot be combined. Choose based on whether you walk across water or move through it.
- Expecting one trident to cover every role: Riptide conflicts with Loyalty. Keep a movement trident and a returning ranged trident if both functions matter.
- Building a crossbow without choosing its payload: Multishot and Piercing are mutually exclusive. Select crowd control or line-and-shield penetration first.
- Copying an old mace build: newer weapons need current edition and version verification. Do not assume a legacy guide still describes your release.
- Adding Thorns without considering wear: reflected damage is useful, but the enchantment increases durability pressure. Pair it with a repair plan and use it only when the benefit justifies the extra maintenance.
- Confusing Mending with automatic immunity to breakage: Mending needs experience and an equipped or held item that can receive the repair. Keep the item available for repair and monitor its durability before dangerous travel.
Edition and version notes
Edition labels are essential. The official Microsoft material used for the basic definitions and application methods is Bedrock-focused, while survival recommendations commonly discuss the latest Java and Bedrock releases together and call out edition-specific behavior. An enchantment’s maximum level, eligible items, incompatibility, or effect can therefore depend on the edition and version you are playing.
Use the table as a survival starting point, then verify the exact rules in your release before finalizing an expensive item. This is especially important for Java-only Sweeping Edge, the normal-Java Infinity/Mending restriction, trident behavior, tool eligibility, and any weapon introduced or changed in a recent update.
Recommended sets for different players
One all-purpose survival set
Choose the broad armor and tool builds in the table: Protection-based armor, Feather Falling and Depth Strider boots, a Sharpness sword, an Efficiency pickaxe, and a Power bow. This minimizes swapping and handles ordinary exploration, building, and combat.
A builder and resource-gatherer set
Keep both Fortune and Silk Touch pickaxes, then apply the same split to any shovel, hoe, or axe where your blocks and drops justify it. Efficiency, Unbreaking, and Mending make the tools practical for long construction sessions.
Recommended Free Tools
A combat and expedition set
Use the general sword and bow, add a specialized Smite or Bane of Arthropods weapon only when your targets justify it, and carry a crossbow configured for the encounter. A Loyalty-and-Channeling trident and a separate Riptide trident cover storm combat and water mobility without compromise.
A deep-dark and underwater set
Swift Sneak leggings support crouched movement, while Respiration and Aqua Affinity improve underwater work. Choose Depth Strider for swimming or Frost Walker for crossing water, and do not combine those two boot plans.
Quick Recap
Final checklist before you enchant
- Is the item’s primary job clearly defined?
- Have you checked Java or Bedrock and the exact game version?
- Are you choosing between a mutually exclusive pair?
- Would two specialized items save time over one compromise item?
- Does the durability plan include Unbreaking, Mending, or a reliable repair method?
- Have you confirmed that Fortune, Silk Touch, or another specialist enchantment applies to the blocks or targets you actually use?
