To install a BeamMP server plugin, place the plugin in its own folder under Resources/Server (or the directory specified by ResourceFolder in ServerConfig.toml), then restart the server and check its console. For example: Resources/Server/MyPlugin/main.lua.

BeamMP treats Lua files in a plugin’s top-level folder as automatically loadable. Lua files buried in subfolders are not automatically loaded unless the plugin code explicitly imports them. The most common installation failures are therefore an incorrect resource path, a missing top-level .lua file, a plugin written for a different server-generation, or an error visible in the server log.

What you need before installing a plugin
You need an initialized BeamMP server, access to its files, and a plugin that supports the major server version you are running. The official setup documentation covers both Windows and Linux. Start the server once before copying plugins: that first run creates ServerConfig.toml and the resource directory used by the server.
Home hosting does not require hosting fees, while the BeamMP setup guide describes VPS hosting as easier and more secure. That choice affects where you perform the file operation, but not the plugin directory structure.

Understand the BeamMP resource folders
BeamMP separates server-side Lua plugins from client-side mods. Put server plugins in Resources/Server. Put client mods, which are ZIP files sent to players, in Resources/Client. A client mod is not a substitute for a server plugin.

The 3.x scripting reference defines a plugin as having its own subfolder in Resources/Server. The server manual likewise describes each folder in that directory containing at least one Lua file as a plugin.

- Open the directory containing your BeamMP server binary and
ServerConfig.toml. - Open
ServerConfig.tomlin a plain-text editor. - Find the
ResourceFoldersetting. - Use the directory named by that setting as the starting point for the plugin path. If it points to
Resources, the final path isResources/Server/<PluginName>.
Do not assume that a second Resources directory elsewhere on the machine is active. A plugin copied into an unused folder will never be seen by the server, even if its files are otherwise correct.
Install a BeamMP server plugin step by step
1. Initialize the server
If this is a new installation, launch the BeamMP server once and allow it to create ServerConfig.toml and the resource folders. Stop it before making structural changes if you prefer a quiet console, then continue with the generated directory.
2. Confirm the configured resource folder
Read ResourceFolder rather than relying on the folder name shown in an installer or download archive. A custom value changes the first part of the path, but not the required Server/<PluginName> structure.

3. Create one folder for the plugin
Inside the configured resource directory, create a Server folder if it does not already exist. Inside Server, create a separate folder for the plugin, such as MyPlugin. Every installed plugin should have its own folder; do not merge unrelated plugins into one directory.

Copy the plugin’s main .lua files directly into its own folder. A minimal installation looks like this:

└── main.luaThe names can differ, but the depth matters: main.lua must be directly inside MyPlugin for automatic discovery. If the download includes an extra wrapper directory, open it and place the actual Lua files in the plugin folder rather than copying the wrapper as the plugin itself.
5. Handle supporting files according to the plugin’s instructions
Some plugins include libraries or other Lua files in subdirectories. BeamMP does not automatically load those nested Lua files. Keep them in subfolders only when the plugin code is designed to load them with require() or another documented method. Moving every file to the top level can break a plugin that expects a particular internal layout.
6. Start or restart the server
Start the server and watch the console while it discovers and executes the plugin. The server manual documents hot reloading for changed Lua files, but the scripting reference notes that some current 3.x versions do not track files added after startup. A full restart is therefore the dependable activation step after adding a new plugin or adding new Lua files.

7. Confirm successful loading
Look for the plugin’s startup output, expected commands, or other behavior described by its author. If there is no indication that it loaded, inspect the console and Server.log before changing files at random. A clean server start without plugin output does not prove the plugin is installed correctly; the plugin may simply be silent.
Server plugin versus client mod
Choosing the wrong resource type is a common cause of “the plugin does nothing.” Server plugins run on the BeamMP server and are Lua folders. Client mods are ZIP files distributed to players. Some features require both sides: the server component may be a Lua plugin, while client-side behavior additionally needs a Lua client extension and a modScript.lua file as described in the official server-side documentation.

BeamMP 3.x compatibility matters
BeamMP Server 3.0.0 introduced drastic changes to the Lua plugin system. Old Lua plugins cannot necessarily be used unchanged with a new server. Before installing, check the plugin’s stated target server version and any migration notes. If an author provides separate releases for pre-3.x and 3.x servers, choose the one matching your server rather than trying to repair an incompatible package by moving files.
Version compatibility is separate from folder placement. A plugin can be in the exact correct path and still fail because it uses an API or loading behavior removed by the 3.x changes. When the console reports an API, syntax, or runtime problem immediately after startup, compare the plugin’s supported version before troubleshooting the filesystem further.

<ResourceFolder>/Server/<PluginName>/<file>.luaOn Windows, check that the file extension is really .lua and not a hidden extension such as .lua.txt. Also check capitalization and spelling when working on a case-sensitive Linux filesystem.
The Lua file is nested too deeply
BeamMP’s automatic loader looks in the plugin’s main directory. This will not be discovered automatically:
Resources/Server/MyPlugin/scripts/main.luaIt can work only if the plugin’s code explicitly imports that file. For an ordinary single-file plugin, the reliable layout is:
Resources/Server/MyPlugin/main.luaThe plugin was added while the server was running
Changed Lua files may be hot-reloaded, but newly added files are not tracked in some current 3.x versions. Stop and restart the server after copying a new plugin, creating a new top-level Lua file, or changing the plugin’s folder structure.
The package targets another server generation
Check the release notes or installation instructions for the plugin’s supported BeamMP version. The 3.x Lua-system changes mean that a legacy plugin may require a port or a different release; copying it again will not resolve an API incompatibility.
The server reports a Lua or path error
Read the console output and Server.log. Separate the symptom from the cause:
- A syntax error points to invalid Lua in the plugin or one of its loaded files.
- A runtime or API error commonly indicates a code problem or server-version mismatch.
- A path or module error usually means a supporting file is missing, in the wrong subfolder, or not imported using the mechanism the plugin expects.
- No output at all generally warrants checking the resource path, top-level file placement, and restart status first.
Fix one reported error at a time, restart, and read the newest log output. Avoid copying a second version of the same plugin into another folder: duplicate installations make it difficult to know which files the server is reading.

Players cannot connect after setup
If the plugin appears to load but players cannot connect, investigate networking separately from plugin installation. The BeamMP FAQ identifies forwarding the configured server port for both TCP and UDP as a requirement in common setups; the commonly used default is port 30814. Confirm the actual port in your configuration and forward that port on the router or firewall for both protocols. A connection failure does not by itself indicate that the Lua plugin path is wrong.
How to evaluate a plugin before installing it
There is no universal official ranking of BeamMP plugins. Evaluate a candidate against the server and community you actually operate:
- Major-version compatibility: verify support for your BeamMP server generation, especially 3.x.
- Server-only or client-dependent design: determine whether players also need a client ZIP, a Lua client extension, or
modScript.lua. - Installation complexity: note whether it is a single top-level Lua file or a package with required subfolders and configuration.
- Configuration requirements: identify required entries in configuration files, permissions, commands, or other documented setup steps before enabling it on a live server.
- Maintenance activity: prefer a package whose release information and compatibility notes are kept current with the server versions you use.
- Performance and resource impact: consider how often it runs and what it does for every connected player; the official documentation does not publish a universal performance rating, so treat the plugin author’s measurements and your own logs as separate evidence.
- License: confirm that its license permits your intended private, community, or commercial use.
A repeatable installation and update workflow
- Record the BeamMP server version and the plugin version before changing files.
- Read the plugin’s own compatibility and configuration instructions.
- Confirm
ResourceFolderand create exactly one directory underServerfor the plugin. - Place the required top-level Lua file or files in that directory, preserving documented subfolders for imported support files.
- Restart the server after adding the plugin or any new Lua files.
- Watch the startup console and inspect
Server.logfor syntax, runtime, module, or path errors. - Test the feature with a controlled connection before making the plugin part of a larger server setup.
For later edits, remember the distinction between changing an already tracked Lua file and adding a new file. Hot reload may handle the former, while a restart remains the safer choice for the latter and for any structural change.
