On a Minecraft Bedrock Dedicated Server, change the maximum visual range by editing the view-distance entry in server.properties, then restart the server. The documented default is 32 chunks, but each player can still see fewer chunks if their own client render-distance setting is lower.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What the setting controls
view-distance sets the server’s maximum render range in chunks. A chunk is a 16-by-16-block area, so increasing the value allows the server to send terrain from farther away for clients to display. It does not force every connected device to draw that entire range, and it does not make game mechanics run at that distance.

Microsoft’s current Bedrock Dedicated Server Properties documentation lists 32 chunks as the default. The value must be a positive integer of at least 5. Microsoft also warns that higher values have a performance impact, so the right number depends on the server hardware, network, player count and the clients connecting to it.
Change view distance in server.properties
1. Stop the Bedrock server
Shut down the Bedrock Dedicated Server cleanly before changing its properties. Editing while the process is running can leave you unsure whether the server has already loaded the old value, and a later shutdown may overwrite an unsaved change.

If you use a control panel, use its Stop or Shutdown control and wait until the console reports that the process has ended. On a self-hosted installation, stop the server through the same operating-system or service method you normally use. Do not edit a live file just because the text editor allows it.
2. Open the server’s main directory
Find the directory that contains the Bedrock Dedicated Server executable and its world folders. The file you need is server.properties in that main directory. Microsoft describes this file as an INI-style configuration file with one key/value pair on each line.
Some hosting panels hide the directory behind a File Manager, Configuration or Server Files page. The filename and setting are the same even when the panel provides a form instead of a traditional file browser. If a panel generates the file, make the change through the panel’s configuration editor when possible.
3. Edit the view-distance line
Open server.properties as plain text and locate the line beginning with view-distance=. Replace only the number after the equals sign. For example:

view-distance=16
Or, for the documented default value:
view-distance=32
Keep the key name exactly as shown, use a whole number, and do not add units such as “chunks.” The documented minimum is 5, so a value below 5 is not valid for this setting. If the file has a comment explaining an option, leave the comment alone and change the key/value line itself.
4. Save the file and restart
Save server.properties, close the editor, and start the Bedrock server again. The server reads its properties during startup; changing the file while it is running does not provide a reliable live reload. Have a player reconnect after startup and check the distant terrain from a high or open location.
Which value should you choose?
There is no universal “safe” distance. A larger value increases the amount of terrain the server may generate and transmit and the amount each client must render. The same number can behave differently on a lightly populated server and a busy one, or on a modern gaming PC and a lower-powered tablet.
| Example value | What it means | When it can make sense |
|---|---|---|
| 5 chunks | The documented minimum accepted value. | Use as a conservative test when performance is already tight or when you need to establish a low-load baseline. |
| 16 chunks | A moderate example value that requests a wider view than the minimum. | Useful as an intermediate test before trying a much larger range. |
| 32 chunks | The documented Bedrock Dedicated Server default. | Use the default as a reference point, then measure whether your actual hardware and player count can sustain it. |
The table is a set of test points, not a promise that any one value will perform well. Increase the setting in small steps, leave enough time for players to explore and generate terrain, and watch for the first signs of trouble before making another change.

Match the setting to your goal
- You want to see terrain farther away: raise
view-distance, then have clients set their own render distance high enough to use the additional range. - You want farms, mobs or redstone mechanisms to keep running farther from players: changing view distance alone is the wrong control. Review simulation-related settings and the server’s
tick-distance. - You have a mixed group of devices: choose a server cap that the hardware can supply, while allowing weaker clients to use a lower local render distance.
- You have many simultaneous players: test with the real player count. A value that works for one player may create unacceptable CPU, memory or network pressure when several players explore separate areas.
Why players may see less than the server value
The server value is a ceiling, not a guarantee. Microsoft states that, for any given client, the effective render distance is the lesser of the server’s view-distance and that player’s client render-distance setting.
| Server view-distance | Client render-distance | Effective visible range |
|---|---|---|
| 32 chunks | 32 chunks | 32 chunks, subject to performance and normal loading conditions. |
| 32 chunks | 16 chunks | 16 chunks, because the client setting is lower. |
| 16 chunks | 32 chunks | 16 chunks, because the server cap is lower. |
| 5 chunks | 32 chunks | 5 chunks, because the server cap remains the limit. |
This explains the common situation in which an administrator raises the server value but a player reports no visible change: the player’s device may still be configured for a lower render distance. Ask that player to check the render-distance option in the Bedrock client and to test from an area with a clear line of sight. A client cannot exceed the server cap, so raising only the local option cannot overcome a lower server value.

These terms describe different kinds of range. Treating them as interchangeable is the most common reason a configuration change appears not to work.
| Setting or concept | What happens in its range | Performance implications |
|---|---|---|
view-distance |
Sets the server’s maximum visual/render range in chunks for clients. | Higher values require more chunk generation, transmission and client rendering work. |
| Client render distance | Sets how far a particular player’s device attempts to display terrain, subject to the server cap. | Higher values can reduce frame rate or increase graphics workload on that device. |
| Simulation distance | Defines the range in which gameplay systems such as entity behavior, mob spawning, plant growth and fluid movement are processed. | Microsoft says simulation distance has a higher performance cost because it affects both the client and server. |
tick-distance |
Controls a separate server-side ticking range. | The documented default is 4 chunks, and the allowed range is 4–12; changing it adds server simulation work rather than simply drawing more terrain. |
If a farm stops working when no player is nearby, increasing view-distance will not necessarily keep that farm active. Visual loading and game simulation are separate jobs. Investigate the simulation setting relevant to your Bedrock setup and the tick-distance value instead of assuming that a larger render range activates mechanics.

Performance effects and how to test safely
Every additional chunk expands the area the server may need to generate, maintain and transmit. The client then has to process and render the received terrain. Increasing simulation-related ranges can be more expensive still because game logic runs across the expanded area.

What to monitor
- Server CPU: look for sustained utilization or tick slowdowns while players travel into unexplored areas.
- Memory: watch for rising usage as more chunks are loaded and retained.
- Network traffic: observe whether players joining, teleporting or exploring cause bandwidth saturation.
- Client frame rate: ask players on different devices whether the larger view causes stutter or a noticeable frame-rate drop.
- Player count and play style: several people exploring in different directions create a more demanding test than players staying together in an already generated area.
A staged test plan
- Record the current
view-distance, player count and any noticeable performance symptoms. - Stop the server and raise the value by a modest increment rather than jumping straight to a very large number.
- Restart and let several players use normal activities: travel, fly if available, load new terrain and return to busy bases.
- Check server responsiveness, memory, network behavior and client frame rates during both exploration and ordinary play.
- If performance remains acceptable, repeat the process once. If lag or instability appears, return to the previous value and retest under the same conditions.
Microsoft documents the setting’s range and warns about performance impact, but it does not promise one safe value for every machine. Your own hardware, world size, storage speed, network capacity and concurrent players determine the practical limit.

The server still shows the old behavior
- Confirm that the server was stopped before editing and fully restarted afterward.
- Check that you edited the
server.propertiesfile in the directory used by the running Bedrock server, not a backup, template or different installation. - Verify the key is spelled
view-distance, the equals sign is present and the value is a whole number of at least 5. - Reopen the file after saving to confirm that the new number is still there. A hosting panel may regenerate configuration from its own settings page.
A player cannot see the advertised range
Compare the server value with that player’s client render-distance setting. The lower number wins. Also test after moving into terrain that is not already loaded and give the server time to send the chunks. A lower-powered device may intentionally use a shorter client range to preserve frame rate.
The server becomes laggy after an increase
Stop raising the number and return to the last value that behaved well. Test again with the actual number of players who use the server, because an increase that looked fine during an empty-server check may fail under normal load. If the goal was only to see farther, do not increase simulation-related settings at the same time; changing multiple ranges makes the source of the extra load harder to identify.
Best Value
Farms or mobs are still inactive at a distance
That symptom concerns simulation, not rendering. Review the simulation-distance behavior and the server’s tick-distance; the documented tick-distance range is 4–12 with a default of 4. A player can be able to see a distant farm while its entities, crops or fluids are outside the active simulation range.

On a managed server, look for a configuration editor or ask the host’s administrator to change the view-distance property. The setting belongs to the server configuration, so changing only an in-game client option cannot raise the server cap. Before changing a panel setting, note whether the panel labels the option “View distance,” “Render distance” or exposes the raw server.properties file.
A practical decision checklist
Use this checklist before settling on a value:
- Is this a Bedrock Dedicated Server whose
server.propertiesfile you can edit? - Have you stopped the server and made a backup copy of the current properties file?
- Is the new value a whole number of 5 or higher?
- Have you identified whether the objective is visual range or active gameplay mechanics?
- Are client render-distance settings high enough for players who want to use the server’s full cap?
- Have you tested with the real player count, normal exploration and the weakest commonly used device?
- Did you change one range at a time so that any performance change has a clear cause?
For administrators who do not control the machine, a Bedrock server hosting provider may expose the same setting through a panel. The important checks remain the same: locate the server’s actual configuration, use a valid integer, restart after saving and distinguish visual range from simulation.
Quick Recap
