The most dependable way to get Leather early in Palworld is to use the Paldeck to find nearby Pals whose Possible Drops include Leather, then defeat or capture those Pals as you explore. If fighting is inefficient, buy Leather from named merchants for the listed price of 150 per piece. Later, assigning Surfent to a Ranch provides a passive source according to the current item reference.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Palworld servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Use hunting for your first crafting materials, merchants when currency is more plentiful than time, and Ranching only after you have the base capacity and a suitable Pal. Drop tables, merchant inventories, prices and Ranch behavior can change with patches, so verify the exact Pal and behavior in the version you are playing.

What Leather is used for
Leather is an in-game material obtained from certain Pals. It is not a universal drop, so defeating every creature you encounter is an inefficient farming plan. The Paldeck is the practical authority for checking whether a particular Pal can provide Leather.
The material is used in Pal gear and other recipes. Examples associated with Leather include Daedream’s Necklace and Nitewing’s Saddle. Recipe quantities vary, so check the recipe at your current technology level before deciding how many pieces to collect.

- 7 per pack
- Each box contains 12 cards
- (C) PALWORLD
The current item reference lists Leather with a weight of 2 and a sell price of 15. Those are page values rather than independently dated statistics; selling Leather is usually less attractive than keeping it for progression or buying it later at the listed merchant price of 150 each.
The reliable early-game Leather route
1. Open the Paldeck before choosing a target
Open the Paldeck, select the entry for a Pal you can reach safely, and look for the Possible Drops section. If Leather is not listed there, move on to another target. This single check prevents long trips and repeated fights against creatures that cannot supply the material.
Interface placement can differ slightly by platform or game update, but the label to look for is Possible Drops. Do not rely on an old list of “best Leather Pals” without checking the in-game entry: drop tables are patch-sensitive, and a Pal that was useful in one version may not be the same target in another.
2. Pick a nearby Pal you can defeat repeatedly
In the opening region, distance and survival matter more than a theoretical maximum yield. Choose an eligible Pal on a route you can repeat without exhausting your healing items, ammunition or durability. A nearby target that you can safely handle is a better first farm than a distant target that forces a dangerous detour.
Look for a loop rather than a single spawn. As you travel between your base, resource nodes and exploration objectives, note eligible Pals that appear along the way. A route that combines Leather hunting with other errands reduces travel time without requiring an exact drop-rate calculation.
3. Defeat or capture eligible Pals
Leather can come from defeating, capturing or butchering eligible Pals. Defeating is the most direct material loop when you only need crafting components. Capture is useful when you also want to add that Pal to your collection, test its work suitability or keep it for later use. Butchering is another listed way to obtain materials from eligible Pals; the available action and its requirements should be confirmed in your current game version.

After each encounter, check your inventory rather than assuming that every eligible encounter produced the same quantity. The available evidence does not establish a universal Leather-per-minute rate or a dated ranking of the highest-yield targets, so plan around confirmed drops and repeatable access instead of a promised number.
4. Store enough for the next recipe
Leather supports progression-oriented recipes, especially Pal equipment. Before spending your stock, open the recipe you are working toward and confirm its quantity. Keep a reserve if you are still unlocking early gear; selling a small early-game stock for 15 each can leave you short when a saddle or accessory becomes available.
5. Switch methods when the economics change
Once travel or combat consumes more time than the material is worth, compare the cost of buying Leather with the value of your currency. The listed merchant price is 150 per piece, so buying is a convenience trade: you exchange money for immediate materials and avoid a hunt. It is most useful when your route has poor access to eligible Pals or when you need a small amount immediately.
How to use the Paldeck as a farming map
Start with reachable entries
Rather than searching the entire Paldeck alphabetically, begin with Pals you have already seen near your current base or travel route. Open each entry and check Possible Drops. Mark the entries that list Leather, then compare them by practical access: walking distance, terrain, combat risk and how often you encounter them during normal exploration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm the target every time you change areas
A target that is convenient near one base may be inefficient after you relocate. Recheck the Paldeck when you move to a new region, unlock a new travel route or encounter a different species. The purpose is not to memorize a permanent tier list; it is to verify the current game’s drop information before committing to a loop.
Use the entry to avoid false assumptions
Visual similarity is not evidence that two Pals share drops. Treat Possible Drops as the deciding field. If the entry does not list Leather, do not count that Pal as part of your farm even if another species in the same area does provide it.

Defeating, capturing and butchering: which action fits?
| Approach | Best use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Defeat | Building a material stock quickly when you do not need the Pal | Uses combat resources and carries encounter risk |
| Capture | Getting Leather while adding a useful Pal to your collection | May take more preparation than a straightforward defeat |
| Butcher | Processing an eligible captured Pal for listed materials | Action availability and requirements can vary by current version; confirm in-game |
There is no single correct action for every encounter. If your immediate objective is a saddle, defeating an eligible Pal on a safe route keeps the loop simple. If you are expanding your roster, capture can provide both a Pal and a chance at material. If you have a surplus of captured Pals and the current version allows the relevant processing action, butchering can be another material option.
Buying Leather from merchants
Merchants provide a currency-based fallback when hunting is inconvenient. The current item page lists Leather at 150 currency per piece and names four merchant sources:

| Fishermans Point Red Shirt Merchant | 150 each | Named merchant listed by the item reference |
| Random incident wandering merchants | 150 each | Encounter-based source; presence and inventory are not guaranteed |
These are current page values, not a guarantee that every merchant will always carry Leather in every patch. If a named merchant does not show the item, check the shop inventory, leave and return later if appropriate for your version, or use the Paldeck route instead. Do not spend your entire currency reserve on Leather if you still need money for essential progression.
When buying is sensible
- You need only a few pieces for a recipe and already have surplus currency.
- Your current eligible targets are far away or too dangerous.
- You are preparing gear before a trip and want to avoid a separate farming excursion.
- You value time more than the 150-per-piece currency cost.
When hunting is better
- You are still building your first currency reserve.
- Eligible Pals are already on your normal exploration route.
- You want to capture the Pal as well as obtain materials.
- You need a larger stock and can repeat a safe encounter loop.
Ranching Leather with Surfent
The current item reference lists Surfent as producing Leather when assigned to a Ranch. This makes Ranching a later passive option: once the Pal and the required base setup are available, production can occur while you perform other base work instead of actively hunting.
Ranching is not the simplest first-minute solution. It requires you to obtain a suitable Surfent, maintain a functioning Ranch arrangement and monitor the resulting output. The cited item information does not establish an exact production rate, cycle time or Leather-per-minute figure, so do not plan around a guaranteed hourly yield.
How to decide whether to add a Ranch source
- Confirm in the Paldeck or current in-game information that your Surfent can be assigned to a Ranch.
- Place or maintain the Ranch required by your current base progression.
- Assign Surfent and verify that the base recognizes the assignment.
- Check the Ranch output after the game has had time to run; do not assume that assignment alone instantly adds Leather to your inventory.
- If no output appears, inspect the Pal’s assignment state and your base’s current work conditions, then verify the behavior against the current patch.
Because Ranch behavior can change, treat the in-game result as authoritative. Hunting remains the dependable fallback if your Ranch is unavailable or not producing.

A practical decision framework
Choose your method by answering four questions: how soon you need the material, how much currency you have, how risky the route is and whether you want a source that continues while you work elsewhere.
| Situation | Recommended method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need your first Leather for early gear | Hunt a nearby Pal verified in Possible Drops | Fastest access without spending scarce currency |
| You have currency but no safe nearby route | Check the named merchants | Trades 150 currency per piece for convenience |
| You want a Pal and materials | Capture an eligible Pal | Combines roster growth with the material objective |
| You have a developed base and Surfent | Assign Surfent to a Ranch | Offers a passive option while other base work continues |
| You need a large stock and have a repeatable route | Run the verified hunting loop | Avoids paying merchant prices for every piece |
How to make an early Leather run efficient
Build the route around existing travel
Start and finish the loop at a location you already use. Combine the Leather encounters with resource gathering, exploration or a return trip to your base. This reduces the opportunity cost of farming without requiring unsupported assumptions about exact spawn or drop rates.
Carry only what the trip requires
Leather has a listed weight of 2, so repeated trips can consume inventory space. Before leaving, make room for the material and the other resources you expect to collect. Returning to unload after every encounter is inefficient; carrying too much, however, can slow or complicate the rest of the run.
Separate material goals from collection goals
If you are collecting a Pal for your roster, capture it even when a defeat would be simpler. If the only goal is Leather, use the safest direct method available. Keeping those objectives distinct helps you avoid wasting capture resources on creatures that do not list the material.
Record what works in your version
After confirming a useful target, note its location and the route you used. This personal map is more reliable than an undated universal ranking because it reflects your current world, equipment and patch. Recheck the Paldeck after major updates before assuming that the route still works.
Troubleshooting common Leather problems
“I defeated a Pal and got no Leather.”
Reopen that Pal’s Paldeck entry and check Possible Drops. The material is limited to eligible Pals, and an encounter with a non-eligible species cannot be fixed by repeating the same fight. If Leather is listed, confirm that the material was not placed in another inventory location or picked up during the encounter.

“My target is too dangerous.”
Do not force the route. Select another eligible Pal that you can reach and defeat safely, or buy the material from a listed merchant if the 150-per-piece price is acceptable. The goal is a repeatable source, not a risky fight with a theoretically attractive target.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“The merchant does not have Leather.”
Merchant inventories and availability are patch-sensitive. Check the other named sources—the Caravan Leader, Duneshelter Red Shirt Merchant and Fishermans Point Red Shirt Merchant—or look for a random incident wandering merchant. If none is available, return to the Paldeck hunting method rather than assuming the listed price guarantees stock.
“Surfent is assigned, but I have no Leather.”
Verify that Surfent is actually assigned to a Ranch and that the Ranch is operating under your current base conditions. The item reference identifies Surfent as a Ranch source but does not provide a guaranteed production interval. If the behavior differs from the reference, rely on the result shown by your current game version and use hunting or merchants while you investigate.
“I sold my Leather by mistake.”
The listed sell price is 15, while the listed purchase price is 150. Rebuild the stock by hunting a verified target or buying only what your next recipe requires. Keep a small reserve for upcoming Pal gear instead of selling every surplus piece.
What not to assume about Leather farming
- There is no supported universal “best Pal” ranking in the available evidence.
- There is no established, dated Leather-per-minute number for early-game routes.
- A merchant price of 150 does not prove that every merchant always has stock.
- Surfent Ranching does not come with a confirmed production rate in the cited item information.
- Older guides may describe drop tables or base behavior that no longer matches your patch.
For those reasons, use the Paldeck and your current in-game menus as the final check. A short, safe route based on verified Possible Drops is more dependable than a rigid list built around unqualified numbers.
