What kind of game is Minecraft Dungeons II?
It is a narrative-driven action-RPG adventure set in the Minecraft universe, not the open-ended gathering-and-building sandbox of standard Minecraft. The sequel follows Minecraft Dungeons, but its story and combat are designed to welcome new players as well as returning ones.

Strange rifts and disturbances threaten the Overworld. The returning illagers are led by the Prime Enchanter, Supreme Evoker and Grand Illusioner, together known as the Illager High Council. Players venture beyond the Overworld to confront the threat in the Sift, a new dimension with its own environments, creatures and hazards. Minecraft’s launch announcement introduces the story and the game’s core features.
What is the Sift like?
The Sift is a major new setting rather than simply another Overworld region. In a September 26, 2026 preview, Xbox Wire identified the Meadows and Carapace biomes, and described shifting tides and hazardous blocks. That preview named some of the dimension’s features, not a complete map or list of every area.

Mojang design director Laura De Llorens described the world as interconnected, with players able to walk between its beginning and end, as well as use fast travel and pursue quests. That description comes from her interview on the Official Xbox Podcast.
How do combat and gear work?
Combat builds can be shaped with weapons, armor, enchants, talismans and artifacts. Mojang says the sequel expands its item and gear systems, giving players more ways to develop a character as they progress. The official launch announcement names these gear categories, but does not establish a complete item catalogue or a single required build.

The game launched September 29, 2026. Official listings name Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10/11 PC, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Storefront listings and regional availability can differ; check the relevant platform store for current availability.

Xbox’s listing currently says the game is included with Game Pass. Catalog inclusion and subscription terms can change, so check the listing and your plan before relying on access through a subscription.

What editions are available?
The Xbox listing presents Standard and Digital Deluxe editions. The Deluxe edition includes four additional hero skins, the Soul Cape, the Blub pet and DLC packs 1 and 2 as they become available. The FAQ says those packs require the base game and an initial content download; their inclusion does not mean unreleased content is playable now. Edition contents may vary by storefront, so confirm what a platform’s purchase page includes.
Can you play solo or in co-op?
Yes. You can play alone or in groups of up to four, using online or couch co-op. The official FAQ also describes cross-play and mixed co-op, in which local players can join additional players online. Console online co-op requires the relevant platform subscription, sold separately. Check the Minecraft Dungeons II FAQ for its current multiplayer details.

Do you need to play the first game?
No. The sequel does not require you to play Minecraft Dungeons first. Returning players may recognize references, but the FAQ says new players can start here. It also describes a Hero Cape reward for eligible returning players who use the same Microsoft account; the stated eligibility deadline is December 31, 2026. Because this is a time-limited offer, check the FAQ for current eligibility terms.
