For an all-purpose Survival set, put Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on every armor piece. Add Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I to the helmet, Feather Falling IV and Depth Strider III to the boots, and Soul Speed III if you regularly cross soul sand or soul soil. Thorns III is optional because it damages attackers but consumes durability faster.

That is the strongest general-purpose starting point, not a universal mathematical optimum. A Nether explorer, ocean-monument raider, ancient-city explorer, builder, PvP player, and elytra user face different threats. The guide below explains all 16 armor enchantments, their maximum levels, compatibility, and the best combination for each armor slot.

Best all-purpose armor enchantments at a glance

The following setup covers ordinary Overworld combat, caves, exploration, and routine travel without sacrificing the specialized abilities that make armor useful outside combat.

Armor piece Recommended enchantments Optional specialization
Helmet Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, Mending I Thorns III if you accept faster durability loss
Chestplate Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I Thorns III, or a specialized protection enchantment for a hazard-focused set
Leggings Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending I Swift Sneak III for crouch-heavy exploration or building; Thorns III is optional
Boots Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, Mending I Frost Walker II instead of Depth Strider III, plus Soul Speed III for Nether routes

Protection IV is the default because it reduces damage from a broad mix of ordinary threats. Replace it only when your activity has a clearly dominant hazard, such as lava, repeated explosions, or constant projectile fire.

How to choose between the four protection enchantments

Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection, and Projectile Protection occupy the same protection role. In normal Survival play, you should treat them as alternatives rather than trying to build one piece with all four. Choose according to the damage you expect most often.

Enchantment Maximum level Best against When to choose it instead of Protection
Protection IV Mixed damage from mobs, falls, environmental hazards, and general combat Almost every general-purpose set
Fire Protection IV Fire, lava, and repeated burning Nether travel, lava work, or a build where fire is the primary risk
Blast Protection IV Creepers, TNT, beds used in the Nether, and other explosions Explosion-heavy mining, combat, or controlled blast work
Projectile Protection IV Skeleton arrows, pillager attacks, ghast fireballs, and other projectiles Projectile-heavy structures, raids, or a PvP matchup dominated by ranged attacks

Protection IV: the default choice

Protection IV is the best single protection enchantment for a mixed-threat world. It does not specialize in one damage type, so it remains useful when a trip includes caves, fall hazards, hostile mobs, and environmental damage. Put it on all four pieces for the most predictable everyday defense.

Fire Protection IV: for lava and burning hazards

Fire Protection IV is the sensible replacement when lava or fire is the reason you are enchanting a separate set. It is particularly valuable for Nether tunnels, lava-clearing projects, and situations where a brief mistake can leave you burning after the original hit.

Blast Protection IV: for explosions

Blast Protection IV targets creeper explosions, TNT, and beds detonated in the Nether. It is useful when explosions are expected rather than occasional. A specialized blast-protection set is more practical than replacing Protection on every permanent piece if your ordinary activities remain mixed.

Projectile Protection IV: for ranged attacks

Projectile Protection IV is aimed at arrows, ghast fireballs, and similar attacks. Consider it for raids, skeleton-heavy areas, or a fight in which ranged damage is consistently more dangerous than melee hits.

The 16 armor enchantments explained

1. Protection IV

Protection IV is the broad, general-purpose damage-reduction option. It belongs on the helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots of an everyday Survival set. Its value is consistency: every piece contributes against a wide range of ordinary threats rather than only one category.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Fire Protection IV

Fire Protection IV is specialized for fire and lava. Use it on a dedicated Nether or lava-work set when burning damage is your primary concern. It is a deliberate trade: you give up the mixed coverage of Protection on that piece in exchange for stronger fire-oriented protection.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

3. Blast Protection IV

Blast Protection IV is designed for explosions. Creepers, TNT, and Nether beds can turn a safe route into a lethal one, and this enchantment is most useful when those blasts are a recurring part of the job. For ordinary exploration, Protection IV is usually less restrictive.

4. Projectile Protection IV

Projectile Protection IV reduces the danger from ranged attacks such as skeleton arrows, pillager shots, and ghast fireballs. It makes sense for raids, fortress approaches, and other areas where you spend more time under fire than in melee range.

5. Feather Falling IV

Feather Falling IV is a boots-only enchantment that reduces fall damage. It has unusually high practical value because falls happen during cave work, End exploration, climbing, building, and elytra travel. Put it on general-purpose boots even if you do not expect to fight often; a single accidental drop can justify the slot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Respiration III

Respiration III is helmet-only and extends the time you can remain underwater before drowning. It is useful for ocean monuments, underwater construction, wreck exploration, and any project that would otherwise require repeated trips to the surface.

7. Aqua Affinity I

Aqua Affinity I is also helmet-only. It improves underwater mining speed, removing much of the slowdown that makes submerged excavation tedious. Respiration helps you stay alive; Aqua Affinity helps you finish the work while you are there, so the two naturally belong together on an exploration helmet.

8. Depth Strider III

Depth Strider III is a boots enchantment that improves movement through water. It is the best general underwater-travel choice because it lets you swim and maneuver more effectively rather than only freezing a route across the surface.

9. Frost Walker II

Frost Walker II freezes water beneath and around the wearer, allowing you to cross the surface without swimming. It is convenient for travel across broad lakes, rivers, and ocean edges, but it changes how you interact with water and does not provide the underwater movement advantage of Depth Strider.

  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

10. Soul Speed III

Soul Speed III increases movement speed on soul sand and soul soil. It is a Nether-travel enchantment, not a universal combat upgrade. Add it to boots used on routes that cross soul-sand valleys or other soul-soil terrain, and account for its separate durability considerations when planning long trips.

11. Swift Sneak III

Swift Sneak III is leggings-only and increases movement speed while crouching. It is especially useful in ancient cities, where careful movement matters, and during building or redstone work that requires frequent crouching near edges. It has little value if you rarely sneak, so it is a focused upgrade rather than a mandatory part of every leggings set.

12. Thorns III

Thorns III can damage an attacker when that attacker hits you. The retaliation is attractive in crowded fights, but each activation adds durability pressure to the armor. Put it on a well-maintained set if you value automatic damage and are prepared to repair more often; leave it off a minimalist or hard-to-replace set.

13. Unbreaking III

Unbreaking III reduces how frequently armor loses durability. It belongs on long-term armor because every other enchantment becomes more useful when the item survives more uses. Apply it to all four pieces, including specialized sets that see occasional but dangerous use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Mending I

Mending I repairs equipped armor when you collect experience. It pairs naturally with Unbreaking III: Unbreaking slows wear, while Mending converts experience into repairs. Keep the piece you want repaired equipped when collecting experience, and remember that competing mending items can affect where the repair is applied.

15. Curse of Binding I

Curse of Binding I prevents an equipped armor item from being removed normally. It remains attached until the item breaks or the player dies, so it is a liability on permanent gear. Inspect found or traded armor before equipping it, especially when the piece has an attractive material or enchantment combination.

16. Curse of Vanishing I

Curse of Vanishing I makes the item disappear when its wearer dies instead of leaving it for recovery. It offers no survival advantage and is undesirable on valuable equipment. Avoid it on gear you intend to retrieve after a dangerous expedition.

What to put on each armor slot

Helmet: breathing, mining, and general defense

The standard helmet is Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. This combination covers mixed damage, underwater breathing, underwater mining, and long-term maintenance. Add Thorns III only when the extra retaliation is worth the durability cost to you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chestplate: your main defense layer

Use Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on a general chestplate. The chestplate supplies a large share of your ordinary armor defense, so it is the first piece to keep in good repair. For a dedicated hazard set, replace Protection IV with Fire Protection IV, Blast Protection IV, or Projectile Protection IV according to the activity.

Leggings: protection plus crouch mobility

General leggings carry Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Add Swift Sneak III for ancient-city exploration, precision building, or any task that keeps you crouched. Thorns III remains optional for the same durability reason as on the other slots.

Boots: fall safety and movement

General boots should have Protection IV, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. This is the most broadly useful travel combination: protection for mixed damage, fall reduction, faster underwater movement, and sustainable durability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace Depth Strider III with Frost Walker II when your priority is walking across water rather than swimming through it. Add Soul Speed III when the boots are used for Nether routes. Because Frost Walker and Depth Strider are mutually exclusive in Survival, you cannot keep both on the same pair through ordinary Survival enchanting.

Depth Strider or Frost Walker?

This is a direct choice between two different kinds of mobility, not a question of which enchantment is universally stronger.

Question Choose Depth Strider III Choose Frost Walker II
Where do you move? Underwater, through rivers, oceans, and submerged structures Across the surface of lakes, rivers, and ocean edges
What does it do? Improves movement speed in water Freezes water beneath the player for surface crossing
Best companion enchants Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I on the helmet Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I remain useful on the boots
Compatibility Mutually exclusive with Frost Walker in Survival Mutually exclusive with Depth Strider in Survival

Choose Depth Strider for ocean monuments, underwater construction, and swimming-based exploration. Choose Frost Walker for overland routes where water is an obstacle and you rarely need to work below the surface. If both activities matter, keep two pairs of boots rather than trying to force one pair to serve incompatible roles.

Specialized armor sets for different activities

Nether and lava travel

  • Use Fire Protection IV on pieces where fire and lava dominate the risk.
  • Put Soul Speed III on the boots for soul sand and soul soil routes.
  • Keep Feather Falling IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on the boots; Nether terrain still creates ordinary fall and durability hazards.
  • Use Protection IV instead of Fire Protection on a mixed-use piece if you spend as much time fighting ordinary mobs as dealing with fire.

Ocean monuments and underwater projects

  • Put Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on the helmet.
  • Use Depth Strider III on the boots for controlled underwater movement.
  • Keep Feather Falling IV on the boots because monument entrances, towers, and temporary scaffolding can still produce falls.
  • Frost Walker II is not a substitute for underwater mobility; it is better suited to crossing the surface between locations.

Creeper, TNT, and other blast-heavy work

  • Choose Blast Protection IV on the armor pieces exposed to repeated explosions.
  • Retain Unbreaking III and Mending I so the specialized set remains practical over multiple jobs.
  • Use Protection IV on pieces that also need to handle ordinary melee or environmental damage.

Raids and projectile-heavy fights

  • Projectile Protection IV is appropriate when arrows and other ranged attacks are the main threat.
  • Keep Protection IV on pieces that must cover melee and environmental damage as well.
  • Do not add a protection specialization merely because a single encounter contains a few projectiles; reserve it for a consistently ranged threat profile.

Ancient cities and careful building

  • Add Swift Sneak III to the leggings for faster crouched movement.
  • Keep Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I as the baseline.
  • Feather Falling IV remains valuable around deep drops and temporary construction.

General End and elytra travel

  • Keep Feather Falling IV on boots because misjudged landings and drops are common risks.
  • Use Protection IV for mixed encounters unless a specific expedition calls for another protection type.
  • Unbreaking III and Mending I are especially important on gear that travels far from a safe repair setup.

Durability, repairs, and Thorns trade-offs

Unbreaking III and Mending I are the maintenance core of a permanent set. Unbreaking reduces the frequency of durability loss, while Mending uses collected experience to restore equipped items. Together they let one well-enchanted set remain serviceable through ordinary play instead of requiring frequent replacement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thorns changes that maintenance equation. It can damage attackers automatically, but repeated hits trigger additional wear. A Thorns III set is sensible when you deliberately want passive retaliation and have reliable access to experience and replacement materials. It is less attractive on a backup set, a newly acquired set, or gear intended for a long trip where repair opportunities are limited.

Applying enchantments without wasting resources

  1. Start with the right armor material. Choose the piece you intend to keep. Enchanting a temporary item can consume books and experience that would be better spent on a permanent set.
  2. Secure the core books first. Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I are the foundation. Add slot-specific books such as Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, or Swift Sneak III afterward.
  3. Combine compatible books before the final anvil application when practical. This can reduce repeated operations compared with applying every book separately. The exact experience cost depends on item history, prior work, and the order of combinations.
  4. Plan around incompatibilities. Decide between the four protection types before combining books, and decide between Depth Strider III and Frost Walker II before finishing a pair of boots.
  5. Inspect every found item before equipping it. Curse of Binding can prevent removal, and Curse of Vanishing can destroy the item on death. A high level or attractive material does not make either curse harmless.
  6. Repair before a major expedition. A nearly broken item with excellent enchantments is still a failure point. Mending helps during play, but begin dangerous travel with a healthy durability buffer.

A high-end example often shown in Minecraft enchantment guides combines Protection IV, Unbreaking III, Mending, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Feather Falling IV, Depth Strider III, Soul Speed III, and Thorns III. Treat that as an ambitious fully enchanted example, not a requirement that every player needs every possible enchantment. The anvil order and resulting cost can make a simpler, curse-free set the better practical choice.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Using specialized protection everywhere

Fire, blast, and projectile protection are excellent against their intended hazards but narrower than Protection. If your day includes caves, travel, mobs, and construction, Protection IV is usually the more reliable baseline.

Putting both water-movement choices on one plan

Depth Strider and Frost Walker are mutually exclusive in Survival. Decide whether you need underwater control or frozen-surface travel, or keep a second pair of boots for the other job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping Feather Falling because you rarely fight

Feather Falling IV protects against a movement mistake rather than an enemy. Caves, scaffolding, the End, and elytra landings all create fall risks even during peaceful projects.

Adding Thorns without a repair plan

Thorns III can make crowded fights easier, but its extra durability pressure is real. Pair it with Unbreaking III and Mending I, and be prepared to collect experience more deliberately.

Equipping cursed armor because the enchantment list looks impressive

Curse of Binding can trap the item on you, while Curse of Vanishing removes it when you die. Neither belongs on valuable permanent gear, and both should be checked before you equip loot.

Assuming every edition behaves identically

The documented maximum levels in Microsoft’s command reference are a Bedrock reference. Minecraft Wiki pages may describe Java and Survival mechanics. Check the edition and game version you are playing when an incompatibility, command behavior, or maximum level matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A quick decision checklist

  • Need one set for nearly everything? Use Protection IV, Unbreaking III, and Mending I on all four pieces; add Respiration III and Aqua Affinity I to the helmet, Feather Falling IV and Depth Strider III to the boots, and Swift Sneak III if you crouch often.
  • Expect mostly fire or lava? Replace Protection IV with Fire Protection IV on the dedicated pieces and add Soul Speed III to Nether boots.
  • Expect explosions? Use Blast Protection IV where blasts are the recurring threat.
  • Expect arrows or fireballs? Use Projectile Protection IV for the ranged-threat set.
  • Need to work underwater? Choose Respiration III, Aqua Affinity I, and Depth Strider III.
  • Need to cross water without swimming? Choose Frost Walker II instead of Depth Strider III.
  • Want passive retaliation? Add Thorns III only if faster wear is acceptable.
  • Found unfamiliar enchanted armor? Check for Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing before equipping it.

The best armor is therefore the set that matches the danger in front of you. Protection IV with Unbreaking III and Mending I is the dependable core; the remaining enchantments should be selected by slot and activity rather than by trying to place every effect on one pair of armor.
