Milwaukee Red Tax: When a Combo Kit’s Premium Makes Sense—and When It Doesn’t

A $200 price gap is only a starting point. Compare exact tool models, batteries, chargers, and your existing platform before deciding if Milwaukee’s premium makes sense.

“Red tax” is shorthand for the premium some buyers perceive when Milwaukee tools cost more than comparable alternatives. A price gap alone does not prove that a Milwaukee kit is a poor buy: compare the exact tools, batteries and charger in the box, then account for what you already own and what you plan to use the kit for.

What the Milwaukee–Ryobi price comparison actually shows

Power Tools Insider’s cordless-kit guide lists the Milwaukee 2997-22 at $399 and the Ryobi PBLCK01K at $199. Those are prices the guide says were current as of April 2026, not verified offers for October 2026. Treat them as a dated example of a price gap, not as today’s checkout prices. The kits also differ in what the buyer receives. The guide describes the Milwaukee bundle as including two 5.0Ah batteries and a rapid charger, and the Ryobi bundle as including two 2.0Ah batteries and a standard charger. Battery capacity and charger type are relevant value differences, but the listed capacity alone does not establish real-world runtime, charging time, tool weight, or performance for a particular task.

Milwaukee’s official product page confirms an M18 FUEL ½-inch Hammer Drill Driver Kit exists. That confirms the product family, but it does not establish a matched performance advantage over the Ryobi kit or explain the price difference. Milwaukee M18 FUEL ½-inch Hammer Drill Driver Kit

Why two combo-kit prices are not an apples-to-apples verdict

Check the exact tool models

Confirm whether each drill is a standard drill driver or a hammer drill, and identify the included impact driver model. A hammer-drill function matters if you expect to drill into masonry; it is not a reason to pay more if your jobs do not require it. Compare the exact SKU on the manufacturer or retailer listing, since similarly named kits can contain different tools.

Value the batteries and charger separately

Two 5.0Ah batteries and a rapid charger may be more useful to someone doing longer or more demanding work than two 2.0Ah batteries and a standard charger. But those bundle contents do not prove a particular runtime or charge-time advantage: check manufacturer specifications for the specific battery and charger, and consider how much battery weight you are willing to carry.

Include your existing platform in the math

If you already own compatible batteries and a charger, a bare tool or smaller bundle may cost less than buying a complete kit. A new buyer, by contrast, should compare the full starter package and the cost of the next batteries, charger, and tools they expect to need. The effective cost of expanding a platform can matter more than the first kit’s headline price.

Match the tool to your actual work

Consider the materials you drill, how often you use the tools, the space and weight constraints of the job, and whether you need hammer-drilling capability. The comparison guide positions Milwaukee toward users prioritizing professional performance and Ryobi toward budget-conscious homeowners; that is the publisher’s assessment, not an independently validated test result.

How to decide whether the red tax is worth paying

  1. Write down the work. List the materials, frequency, and tasks the drill and impact driver must handle. Note whether hammer drilling is necessary.
  2. Compare matching kit contents. Record exact tool model numbers, battery quantity and capacity, charger type, and any included accessories. Do not compare a bare tool with a complete kit.
  3. Check current prices for the exact SKUs. The April 2026 figures above are historical context. Verify live retailer listings, stock, and bundle contents before deciding.
  4. Calculate your platform cost. Subtract the value of compatible batteries and chargers you already own, then price the batteries, charger, and additional tools you expect to buy.
  5. Check official terms and fit. Review current warranty and service terms, and assess tool weight and ergonomics in relation to your tasks. The cited comparison does not settle these points.

What the available evidence cannot establish

The cited comparison provides a dated price-and-bundle example, while Milwaukee’s official page confirms its M18 FUEL hammer-drill kit. These sources do not provide independent matched testing, long-term reliability evidence, or a primary-source explanation for Milwaukee’s pricing. They therefore cannot show that Milwaukee tools always last longer, outperform an alternative by a particular amount, or are worth the premium for every buyer.
