Then verify the microphone selected for Voice Access and Windows microphone access. These checks help distinguish an incomplete setup or input issue from the feature’s limits in noisy or overlapping speech.
Confirm the selected speech-recognition mode
Open the settings menu on the Voice Access bar and choose Improve speech recognition. Check which filtering mode is selected. The three choices do different things, so ordinary background-noise removal is not the same as Voice Isolation.

Microsoft describes Voice Isolation as helping Voice Access focus on your voice amid background noise or nearby speakers. See Microsoft’s Voice Isolation instructions for the current settings flow.
Finish or repeat Voice Isolation setup
If Voice Isolation has not been initialized, select it in Improve speech recognition, choose Proceed, wait for the model download, and complete the voice recording. An internet connection is needed for that initial download. Setup is complete when Windows confirms it has finished.

If Voice Isolation is enabled but recognition remains poor, open Manage Voice Isolation and use the option to record your voice again. Deleting the voice signature removes it from the device; you will need to complete setup again before using Voice Isolation.
Check the microphone Voice Access is using
During Voice Isolation setup, Windows provides a microphone-selection step. If more than one input is available, confirm that the intended microphone is selected and connected; you can also open Sound settings from that step. A laptop microphone, headset microphone, and external microphone can receive very different levels of your voice and surrounding sound.

Also check Windows microphone access and input level. Microsoft’s general voice-typing guidance recommends reviewing microphone privacy access if input is blocked and adjusting the input level if speech is not coming through. These are sensible checks for Voice Access too, but they are not identified as Voice Isolation-specific causes. See Microsoft’s voice-typing troubleshooting guidance.

Match the filter to the noise you hear
Voice Isolation is designed to separate your voice from other speakers as well as background noise. It works best when you are the primary speaker and the noise level is moderate. Very loud surroundings can still produce recognition errors, while overlapping speech, a person speaking immediately before or after you, or voices that sound similar can make separation harder.

If the distracting sound is a keyboard, tapping, or knocking rather than speech, test Remove background noise only. In a quiet room, Voice Isolation may make little noticeable difference because there is little noise to filter. Compare modes in the same conditions and use the one that produces the clearest recognition.
Check Voice Access setup and update status
Voice Access is available on Windows 11 version 22H2 and later. Its initial setup needs an internet connection to obtain language files; after setup, Microsoft says its speech recognition can run on-device and work offline. Check Microsoft’s Voice Access setup page for current language support and setup details.

If Voice Access shows that it is listening but does not respond, check Windows Update status. Microsoft’s Voice Access release notes document fixes for some listening-without-response problems and error state 9001, but they do not establish one update as a fix for every Voice Isolation issue. For a repeatable problem, submit feedback in Feedback Hub under Accessibility > Voice Access.

Microsoft says the one-time model download is followed by on-device speech processing; the voice signature is created and stored locally, and voice recordings are not uploaded or shared. Voice Isolation learns characteristics of the speaker rather than a particular language, so a setup recording in one language can be used with Voice Access in another.

If you want to isolate a microphone hardware issue, trying an existing headset or external microphone is an optional diagnostic. Microsoft mentions this as general voice-typing advice, not as a guaranteed Voice Isolation fix. Check the mode, setup, permissions, and selected input before considering different hardware.
