Microsoft says its Project Zenith devices, starting with AMD Ryzen AI Halo, have at least 64GB of unified memory and 250GB/s of memory bandwidth, and can run models with 30 billion or more parameters locally. Those are specifications and claims for a high-end hardware tier—not confirmed minimum requirements for MAI-Code-1.
Can you run Microsoft’s coding AI locally?
Possibly, but the available announcements do not confirm the local hardware requirements for MAI-Code-1. A TechRadar report describes MAI-Code-1 as tuned for GitHub and VS Code, while Microsoft’s official Windows developer materials do not specify how much memory it needs to run locally. There is also no independent benchmark here for the model’s local speed or performance.

Microsoft has separately announced Aion 1.0 Plan, a 14-billion-parameter reasoning and tool-calling model for local agentic workflows. That is a different named model; its specifications should not be treated as MAI-Code-1 requirements. Microsoft’s Build 2026 announcement covers Aion, while TechRadar’s report discusses MAI-Code-1.

Microsoft’s announcements describe more than one high-end option, but their figures are not a standardized comparison. The company’s claims indicate intended capability, not independent test results.

| Hardware or tier | Announced specifications or claim | What that establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Project Zenith developer devices, starting with AMD Ryzen AI Halo | At least 64GB unified memory and 250GB/s memory bandwidth; Microsoft says the tier can run models with 30B+ parameters locally and unmetered. | A reference point for a purpose-built developer class. It is not a stated minimum for MAI-Code-1. More partner devices are expected. Microsoft’s Project Zenith announcement provides these figures and claims. |
| Surface RTX Spark Dev Box | 128GB unified memory and up to 1 petaflop AI compute. | Announced for local development and inference workloads. Microsoft said availability would come later in 2026; the cited announcement did not give a price. Microsoft’s Build 2026 announcement provides these specifications. |
Microsoft describes Project Zenith’s ability to run 30B+ parameter models locally and without metered cloud tokens as a company claim. It is not a published independent benchmark, and parameter count alone does not tell you how quickly a particular coding task will run.
How much memory do you need for a local coding model?
There is no confirmed minimum for MAI-Code-1 in the cited official material. The Project Zenith figure of 64GB or more is a useful reference for Microsoft’s developer-class hardware, not a universal threshold. The more demanding Surface RTX Spark Dev Box announcement describes 128GB of unified memory, but likewise does not identify that amount as necessary for MAI-Code-1.

Whether a model fits and performs well depends on the model, software, quantization, workload, and system configuration. A high-memory PC may make larger local models more practical, but its memory figure alone cannot guarantee a satisfactory coding assistant.
Can a regular Windows PC run local AI?
Windows ML supports local inference through CPU, GPU, and NPU hardware paths. Microsoft Learn lists any PC configuration as supported, while noting that performance varies with the hardware and model. That means the framework can support local inference across PC configurations; it does not mean every PC can fit or run a large coding model quickly.

For smaller or less demanding local workloads, a standard PC may be a reasonable starting point. For larger models or sustained agentic coding workflows, memory capacity and bandwidth become more consequential. Microsoft’s Windows ML overview explains the supported hardware paths and performance qualification.

No such requirement is established. TechRadar describes a 192GB configuration of the GMKtec EVO-X5 Pro as one possible machine for local AI and coding-assistant workloads, not as a Microsoft recommendation or a tested MAI-Code-1 system. Suitability depends on the exact configuration and software as well as the model and workload. Check the current product listing for configuration, availability, and price before buying.

What should you check before buying a local-AI PC?
- Memory: Confirm usable memory capacity and whether it is unified or dedicated to a GPU. Do not translate Microsoft’s Project Zenith tier into a model minimum.
- Bandwidth and compute: These can affect inference performance, but the announcements do not provide standardized head-to-head tests for the devices.
- Model and software support: Verify that the particular model and local inference software work with the machine’s hardware. General Windows ML support is not confirmation that a specific model is supported or performs well.
- Workflow: Local inference can reduce reliance on metered cloud tokens, as Microsoft says of Project Zenith, but local performance depends on the selected hardware and workload.
- Availability and total cost: Project Zenith partner devices may differ, and Microsoft described the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box as arriving later in 2026. Confirm the actual configuration and current availability before making a purchase decision.
