Microsoft may suit investors who want exposure to a broader mix of productivity software, cloud services and personal computing; NVIDIA may suit investors seeking more concentrated exposure to accelerated computing and AI infrastructure. Neither profile is automatically safer or a better investment. The fit depends on your time horizon, tolerance for volatility and business concentration, existing holdings, income needs and view of future earnings.

Company results show the difference clearly: Microsoft reported $331.8 billion in FY2026 revenue across three reporting segments, while NVIDIA reported $66.595 billion in its quarter ended July 26, 2026, with $62.696 billion from Compute & Networking. Those figures describe different reporting periods and do not, by themselves, predict future returns.

What is the main difference between Microsoft and NVIDIA as investments?

Microsoft’s reported business spans Productivity and Business Processes, Intelligent Cloud, and More Personal Computing. That breadth gives investors exposure to several large businesses, including Microsoft 365 and Azure, rather than a single dominant revenue category. NVIDIA’s latest reported revenue was much more concentrated in Compute & Networking, and the company said recent growth was driven by data center products for accelerated computing and AI.

Broad product portfolios can reduce reliance on one line of business, but they do not eliminate company-specific or market risk. Likewise, concentration does not prove that NVIDIA’s growth will end; it means its results can be more sensitive to the factors that drive its dominant business.

How are the companies performing?

Microsoft: broad revenue base, with cloud and AI carrying execution risk

Microsoft reported FY2026 revenue of $331.8 billion, operating income of $155.2 billion, net income of $133.7 billion and diluted earnings per share of $17.95. Microsoft Cloud revenue was $214.4 billion in FY2026, compared with $168.9 billion in FY2025. These figures are from Microsoft’s FY2026 Form 10-K and FY2026 results.

In the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 43% year over year, and Microsoft Cloud revenue was $59.3 billion, up 27%. Other results were less uniform: Microsoft 365 Commercial cloud grew 14% on a reported basis, or 16% adjusted for a prior-year comparison item; Xbox content and services revenue fell 10%, and Windows OEM and Devices revenue fell 7%. These are quarterly comparisons reported by Microsoft in its Q4 FY2026 results.

Microsoft’s breadth does not make its growth effortless. Its FY2026 Form 10-K identifies intense competition, difficulty forecasting demand for cloud and AI services, the risk that capacity investments may not match demand, and uncertainty around AI computing, energy and component costs. Microsoft Cloud’s gross margin percentage was 66% in FY2026, down as AI infrastructure investment and usage affected costs, partly offset by efficiency gains.

NVIDIA: rapid data-center-led growth, with concentrated operating exposure

NVIDIA reported Q2 FY2027 revenue of $66.595 billion for the three months ended July 26, 2026, compared with $30.605 billion in the comparable prior-year period. Compute & Networking contributed $62.696 billion and Graphics $3.899 billion. NVIDIA attributed the year-over-year increase to the ramp of Blackwell Ultra infrastructure. These are reporting segments, not direct equivalents of product categories; Graphics should not be read as only gaming. The figures and explanation appear in NVIDIA’s Q2 FY2027 Form 10-Q.

For full-year context, NVIDIA reported FY2026 Data Center revenue of $193.7 billion, up 68%, and Gaming revenue of $16.0 billion, up 41%, in its FY2026 results. Its Q2 FY2027 filing says Vera Rubin production shipments began in the third quarter of FY2027 and describes current supply constraints.

NVIDIA’s filing also describes risks tied to forecasting demand, customers’ access to capital and data-center infrastructure, and the pace of adoption of new technologies. As of July 26, 2026, NVIDIA had $279 billion in supply and capacity commitments, up from $119 billion the previous quarter. That figure signals substantial operational exposure to securing supply and matching capacity to demand; it is not, by itself, evidence that demand will reverse.

How do their risks differ?

Investment factor Microsoft NVIDIA
Revenue profile Three broad reporting segments; Microsoft Cloud generated $214.4 billion in FY2026. Q2 FY2027 revenue was concentrated in Compute & Networking: $62.696 billion of $66.595 billion.
Growth exposure Azure and other cloud services grew 43% year over year in the quarter ended June 30, 2026; results across other businesses varied. Recent growth was driven by data-center products for accelerated computing and AI, including the Blackwell Ultra infrastructure ramp.
Execution and investment risk Cloud and AI demand forecasts, capacity utilization, component and energy costs, and cloud margins. Demand estimates, supply constraints, capacity commitments, infrastructure deployment and customers’ ability to fund purchases.

The company disclosures do not establish which stock will be less volatile or deliver better returns. They do show different exposures: Microsoft must manage investment and margins across a broad portfolio, while NVIDIA’s results are more directly tied to demand and execution in its dominant compute business.

What do the valuation figures say—and what do they not say?

At the October 6, 2026 market close, Stock Analysis listed Microsoft at $529.30 and NVIDIA at $239.24. Its calculated trailing and forward price-to-earnings ratios were:

As of October 6, 2026 close Microsoft (MSFT) NVIDIA (NVDA)
Share price $529.30 $239.24
Trailing P/E 29.49 30.25
Forward P/E 26.77 19.78

These are provider-calculated market snapshots, not figures published by the companies. See Stock Analysis’s MSFT statistics and NVDA statistics. Forward P/E depends on earnings estimates and the provider’s methodology; both the share price and estimates can change.

NVIDIA’s lower displayed forward P/E does not establish that it is cheaper on a risk-adjusted basis. A valuation comparison also depends on whether earnings expectations prove durable, as well as margins, capital needs, competitive position, concentration and downside risks. These ratios alone cannot support a fair-value conclusion.

Which stock may fit which investment goals?

Use the comparison to clarify what you want a holding to do in your portfolio, rather than treating either company as a universal choice.

Microsoft may be a closer fit if…

  • You prefer exposure across productivity, cloud and personal computing rather than a business whose latest reported revenue is heavily concentrated in one segment.
  • You believe Microsoft can continue growing its cloud and AI businesses while managing infrastructure spending, costs and margins.
  • Your existing portfolio is already heavily exposed to chipmakers or AI infrastructure and you want a different mix of business activities. This changes exposure, not the underlying investment risk.

NVIDIA may be a closer fit if…

  • You specifically want exposure to accelerated computing and AI infrastructure, and accept greater sensitivity to demand in that area.
  • You believe customers will keep funding and deploying data-center infrastructure, and that NVIDIA can meet demand amid supply constraints and large capacity commitments.
  • You can tolerate the possibility that technology adoption, customer spending or supply conditions may develop differently from expectations.

Questions to answer before choosing

  • Time horizon: Can you hold through periods when growth expectations, earnings estimates or share prices change?
  • Concentration: How much technology, cloud, AI or semiconductor exposure do you already have through individual stocks or funds?
  • Loss tolerance: Would a significant decline in either holding force you to sell or disrupt other financial plans?
  • Income needs: Does the role you want this investment to play depend on current income? The cited company results and valuation snapshot do not compare investor-specific income needs.
  • Earnings view: What assumptions about future growth, margins, competition and investment are you relying on—and what would change your view?

Company filings can describe businesses and risks; they cannot determine your personal suitability. The choice therefore depends on your circumstances and on expectations about future earnings, not on past growth or one valuation multiple alone.
