Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDownload the map while you still have Wi-Fi or cellular service, then make sure the saved area covers your whole route. Google Maps and Apple Maps both offer offline map options, but the available features and regional support differ. A map saved to your phone does not guarantee that every online feature—such as live traffic or every search option—will work without a connection.
Before you leave coverage
Choose the map app you plan to use, download the destination area while connected, and check that the download is complete. Include the full route inside the saved area: Google says offline guidance can take you to your destination only when the entire route is within the offline map. Keep in mind that any service needing a network may be unavailable offline.

- Check that your phone has enough free storage for the map.
- Open the app’s offline-map controls to confirm the area is saved.
- For a long trip, consider bringing a phone power bank; it is optional, not a requirement for offline maps.
Download an offline map in Google Maps on Android
- While connected to the internet, open Google Maps and sign in.
- Search for a place and open its place sheet.
- Tap the more-options menu, then choose Download offline map.
- Adjust the map area if the app offers that option, then tap Download.
- Before you travel, check your offline maps in the app and verify the saved area contains the complete route.
Google’s Android instructions say the map can be saved to the device or an SD card. If you change the save location, you need to download the map again. Offline downloads are not available in some countries or regions because of contractual, language-support, or address-format limitations. See Google Maps Help.

Which app should you use?
For most phone users, the practical choice is the app already suited to their device. Download the destination area and inspect it before the trip; the official instructions do not establish which app has better coverage or route quality for a particular destination.

When a specialist mapping option makes sense
Garmin Explore offers offline-map workflows for compatible devices, but compatibility depends on the exact model. Garmin says Outdoor Maps+ content for certain listed devices is available in the app only, rather than as a direct download to those devices. Check the current Garmin Support information for the specific device and content before relying on it.
