If a Microsoft verification text does not arrive, first check the phone number Microsoft is trying to reach and whether your phone can receive the message. Then stop requesting codes repeatedly: repeated attempts can trigger a temporary block. A missing SMS is usually a phone-delivery or Microsoft-account security issue, not proof that Windows itself is broken.
First, identify which account is asking for verification
Microsoft account verification during Windows sign-in can involve a personal account or an organization-managed work or school account. The available methods and rules can differ, so follow the options shown for your account rather than assuming every Windows sign-in works the same way. Microsoft’s Windows and Microsoft account sign-in troubleshooting guidance points users with missing codes to code-specific help and the sign-in helper.

If Windows offers a different connected verification method, use that before trying to make SMS work. If the prompt says “We can’t send a text message to this number” or asks you to “Try another verification method,” those options may reflect account protections or delivery limits, not a Windows installation fault.

Check the number and phone before requesting another code
- Compare the masked number. Microsoft displays only part of the destination number during sign-in. Check its last two digits against the current primary phone number on your account. Microsoft says it sends texts to the primary number on the account.
- Check message filtering. Make sure your phone is not blocking or filtering texts from unknown senders. Look in filtered, spam, or blocked-message folders if your messaging app has them.
- Check inbox capacity and the app. Free space if the message inbox is full, and confirm the messaging app can receive ordinary texts.
- Confirm the number type. Microsoft does not accept VoIP numbers for sign-in verification.
Microsoft also lists regional SMS limitations, temporary service availability, unusual sign-in activity, and excessive code requests as possible reasons a text may be delayed or unavailable. Its verification-code troubleshooting page warns: “Don’t make excessive or repetitive requests to alternative emails or phone numbers as this can cause us to block you and not send verification codes.”
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Stop repeat requests and try the safer recovery path
- Choose an offered alternative. Depending on the account, Microsoft may offer email, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey. Availability varies, so use only options actually presented for your sign-in.
- If a temporary block seems likely, pause. Microsoft suggests trying another network and waiting instead of repeatedly requesting codes. If there is no change after 24 hours, its guidance says to wait longer—as long as possible, up to a week—and use the sign-in helper.
- Use Microsoft’s sign-in helper for a persistent problem. Start with the Microsoft account sign-in helper if waiting and available methods do not restore access.
Do not keep cycling through the same request while waiting: Microsoft says repeated attempts can trigger blocks and may reset a time lock.
Recover carefully if the registered method is unavailable
If you can still access the account using another method, add and verify a working sign-in method before removing the inaccessible one. Manage methods through the account’s Security settings once you are signed in. Avoid changing all security information at once.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-C, USB-A, & NFC): Designed for PCs, Macs, iPhones, and Android. For mobile use, simply unfold the key, align it with your phone’s NFC antenna, and hold for a few seconds to authenticate.
- Enhanced MFA (FIDO2 & TOTP/HOTP): Strengthen your security with flexible options. Use the Manager App to access TOTP/HOTP features for accounts that do not yet support FIDO2.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID. NFC is supported only through mobile authentication, Not MacOS/windows.
If every security method is lost and you replace all security information, Microsoft says the replacement can require a 30-day wait before sign-in. If you also do not know the password, follow Microsoft’s account recovery process; its troubleshooting guidance directs users to the recovery form.

Which verification alternatives can help?
Methods depend on the account and may not all be available during a particular sign-in. The useful distinction is whether an option is already connected and accessible without the missing phone text.

| Method | What it can help with | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| An account may offer a code to a connected email address. | Only use an address shown as an available verification option. | |
| Microsoft Authenticator | Microsoft lists the app among possible verification methods; its security-info guidance says it can provide codes while the device is offline. | It helps only if it was set up for the account and is accessible. |
| Passkey | Microsoft lists passkeys among possible sign-in methods. | Availability depends on account setup and the device or credential where the passkey is stored. |
| Windows Hello | A Windows device can use a PIN or biometrics for device sign-in rather than an SMS code. | It is a device sign-in method, not a way to receive or replace an account verification text. |
| Physical security key | Microsoft names security keys among passwordless options. | Confirm that the account supports the key before buying one; it will not clear an account hold or fix a missing text. |
Microsoft says an account can have up to 10 different ways to verify sign-in. The options shown in your own Security settings are the ones that matter.
Protect the account if you receive an unexpected code
A code you did not request can mean someone tried to access the account, someone entered the wrong contact information, or a previously requested code arrived late. Do not share an unsolicited code or reply with it. If a message’s authenticity is uncertain, do not click its link; go to the account site directly instead. Microsoft says support agents cannot send verification codes or access and change account details for you.

When this is a Windows sign-in problem rather than SMS delivery
If the verification prompt appears during Windows sign-in, separate the device’s local sign-in from Microsoft account verification. A device PIN or biometric through Windows Hello may be available for signing in to that Windows device, but it is not an SMS code and does not repair account security information. If the account verification step itself cannot be completed, troubleshoot the phone, alternate methods, and account recovery flow rather than reinstalling Windows.
