Choose Microsoft Teams if your organization already relies on Microsoft 365, Outlook, and Microsoft documents, or needs structured online meetings. Choose Slack if your team works across a varied software stack and values flexible channels and collaboration with outside organizations. Neither is the universal winner: the better fit depends on your workflows, plan, and licensing. Here’s how to compare them without assuming that a bundle, feature list, or app-directory count tells the whole story.
Teams or Slack: the quick decision
| What matters most | Microsoft Teams is a better fit when… | Slack is a better fit when… |
|---|---|---|
| Existing tools | Your people already use Microsoft 365, Outlook calendars, and Word or Excel files every day. | Your work spans many SaaS tools and you want a conversational hub across them. |
| Message organization | A more hierarchical structure of teams and channels matches how the organization is arranged. | Flexible project, functional, and cross-functional channels suit the way people collaborate. |
| Meetings | You need scheduled meetings and features such as recording, transcription, breakout rooms, or larger events. | Quick, informal Huddles meet your needs, or another service handles formal meetings. |
| External collaboration | Your administrators can configure guest and shared collaboration for your Microsoft environment. | Shared channels and Slack Connect are central to working with customers, suppliers, or partners. |
| Cost and AI | A Microsoft 365 bundle is already valuable, or a Teams plan fits; you may also be evaluating Microsoft Copilot. | You prefer an independent collaboration subscription and the AI features included in the Slack plan you select. |
Use this as a starting point, not a feature or compliance checklist. Capabilities depend on plan, geography, licensing, and sometimes administrator configuration. How do Teams and Slack organize everyday conversations?
Teams: a hierarchy of teams and channels
Microsoft Teams groups channels inside teams, providing an organizational structure that can work well when teams map to departments, projects, or other established groups. Teams also supports threaded conversations in channels, according to Zapier’s comparison, but not threads in direct-message chats. Zapier’s comparison

Slack: flexible channels and threads
Slack channels can be organized around a project, function, or cross-functional discussion. Its channel flexibility and threading can help keep side conversations attached to a relevant message instead of mixing them into the main discussion. Zapier describes Slack’s search and messaging experience as a strength, while noting that Teams has improved; that is an editorial assessment, not a measured result guaranteed for every team.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPPORT WORK FROM ANYWHERE WITH SYNC: Whether employees are in the office, at home, or somewhere else, Sync device management software helps everyone stay connected by letting you ensure their Logitech video collaboration personal devices are being used and up to date.
- Open workspaces are great for collaboration, but not so great when the noise around you makes it hard to concentrate. Active noise cancellation substantially reduces unwanted ambient sound, so you can get focused and stay focused.
- Great for Music and Talking with immersive sound for listening to music and a noise-canceling mic that ensures that your voice is heard on the other end of a call—not the noise around you.
- On ear controls to adjust volume, start/end calls, and invoke Teams. Plus button controls for power, active noise cancellation (ANC), wireless Bluetooth pairing, and mute on/off or use the flip-to-mute mic feature.
- Certified for Microsoft Teams ensures it’s easy to pick-up or answer Teams meetings, calls, messages, and notifications with a single press to the Teams button. Or apply a longer touch to invoke Cortana voice skills.
Before switching, try both with representative conversations: a recurring project discussion, a quick question, a decision that needs to be found later, and a file shared for review. The better structure is the one your team can use consistently and search effectively.
Which app is better for meetings and calls?
Choose Teams for structured meetings
Teams is the stronger candidate when meetings are a core part of work. The comparisons cite scheduled calls, recording, transcription, breakout rooms, and larger meeting or event capabilities. Exactly which features and limits apply depends on the plan, so check the current plan details before choosing based on a particular meeting size or recording workflow. Microsoft Teams options

- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption

Choose Slack Huddles for informal calls
Slack presents Huddles as a way to start a quick, spontaneous audio or video conversation. That may suit a team that needs lightweight calls and already uses a separate service for formal meetings. Don’t assume Huddles replace a structured meeting workflow: compare the actual features your organization needs, such as scheduling, recording, transcription, and breakout rooms. Sources: Slack pricing and Microsoft 365 business pricing; the historical Teams licensing figures are in Microsoft’s November 2025 licensing update. Prices, taxes, discounts, currency, contract terms, and billing cadence can vary. Microsoft changed standalone and suite availability from November 1, 2025, and some suite prices changed effective July 1, 2026. Existing agreements and renewal dates can affect what an organization actually pays. Compare the offers available in your country rather than assuming Teams is simply included with Microsoft 365.
What about integrations and work with other organizations?
Integrations: check the apps you actually use
Slack reports more than 2,600 apps in its App Directory. That is a vendor-reported directory count, not a measure of integration quality, overlap, or availability on every plan. Teams’ clearest integration advantage is its native Microsoft 365 environment, particularly Outlook and Microsoft file workflows. In either app, test the specific integrations your team depends on before making a decision. Slack App Directory

External collaboration: compare setup as well as features
Slack Connect is designed for shared work with external organizations. Teams also supports guest and shared collaboration. Slack’s competitive comparison says Microsoft Entra configuration may be needed and that support can differ between organizations; because this is Slack’s own comparison, treat it as a claim to verify against Microsoft documentation and your tenant’s setup. How should you compare AI and automation?
Compare AI by feature and plan
“AI” does not mean the same package in both products. Slack’s pricing page lists basic AI features in Free and Pro and advanced features, including enterprise search, in Business+. The cited Microsoft material lists Microsoft 365 Copilot as an add-on for standalone Teams Enterprise. Compare the exact capability you need, where it appears in the workflow, which plan or add-on provides it, and the full additional cost; the available sources do not establish equivalent features across plans. Slack plan features Microsoft Teams plan options
Best Value
- Comfortable on-ear design with lightweight, padded earcups for all-day wear.
- Background noise-reducing microphone.
- High-quality stereo speakers optimized for voice.
- Mute control with status light. Easily see, at a glance, whether you can be heard or not.
- Convenient call controls, including mute, volume, and the Teams button, are in-line and easy to reach.
Match automation to your existing workflows
Slack describes Workflow Builder as native automation, while Microsoft’s comparison connects Teams automation to Power Automate. If your organization already maintains Microsoft automation flows, that may weigh in Teams’ favor; if you want workflows embedded in Slack, Slack’s tooling may suit better. Verify compatibility with your apps and chosen plan before relying on a particular automation.
What should organizations check for security and compliance?
Feature comparisons alone do not establish which product meets a particular organization’s security or regulatory requirements. The cited sources do not provide a complete current, plan-by-plan comparison of certifications, retention, e-discovery, data residency, or eligibility for regulated industries. Consult each vendor’s current compliance documentation and the terms of your organization’s contract before selecting a service.
A practical way to make the choice
- List the workflows that matter. Include daily chat, file collaboration, meetings, external partners, integrations, automation, and any compliance obligations.
- Start from your current stack. If Microsoft 365 and Outlook are already central to work, evaluate Teams against those existing workflows. If your essential tools span multiple vendors, test whether Slack brings them together effectively.
- Test real conversations and calls. Use representative channels, direct messages, search tasks, files, and meeting types rather than judging from a feature list alone.
- Price the actual offer. Compare the plan and add-ons your users need, with billing cadence, country, taxes, contract terms, and renewal timing accounted for.
- Validate external access and governance. Ask administrators to confirm guest or shared collaboration, app access, retention, and required compliance controls for the organization’s tenant and chosen plan.
There is no neutral, current head-to-head productivity statistic in the cited material that establishes one app as universally more productive. Make the decision on fit, verified plan entitlements, and how well the service supports your team’s actual work.
