Start with the smallest task and least privilege; keep consequential actions such as sending, spending, deleting, or changing settings under human review. These controls reduce the impact of mistakes or manipulation—they cannot prove an agent is immune to prompt injection.
Why connected AI agents need extra safeguards
An agent may read webpages, emails, documents, or API responses while working. Any of that content can contain hostile instructions intended to redirect the agent—an attack often called indirect prompt injection or agent hijacking. The content may look like ordinary data, but it can try to persuade the agent to disclose information or take an action the user did not request. NIST’s January 2025 discussion of agent-hijacking evaluations describes this as a security concern: NIST: Strengthening AI Agent Hijacking Evaluations.

The risk is not limited to hostile content. NIST’s January 12, 2026 request for information notes that agent systems can plan and take autonomous actions affecting real-world systems or environments. An RFI seeks input; it is not a final binding standard. NIST’s announcement reflects an active security and deployment topic, not a certification that any particular agent is safe.
Prompt-injection defenses are layered and incomplete. OpenAI describes prompt injection as an evolving challenge, so model behavior alone should not serve as the permission boundary. Controls around the agent—such as scoped tools, constrained execution, validated data flows, monitoring, and human approval—help limit consequences. OpenAI’s overview of prompt injection explains the ongoing challenge.

Checklist before connecting an agent to an account
- Define the smallest task. Give a precise instruction, such as finding a particular message or drafting a reply. Avoid open-ended authorization like “take whatever action is needed.”
- Ask whether sign-in is necessary. For research that does not require private account data, use logged-out access if the product offers it. OpenAI’s user guidance recommends limiting an agent to the data needed for a task: OpenAI: Understanding prompt injections.
- Review each connector permission. Decline access to unrelated mailboxes, files, contacts, payment methods, or write actions. Prefer read-only access or a specific resource rather than an entire account, when those options are available. OWASP’s guidance is direct: “Apply least privilege to all agent tools and permissions.” OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.
- Separate drafting from execution. Decide which actions the agent may prepare and which require your confirmation. Before approving an email, purchase, transfer, deletion, or settings change, check the recipient or destination, content, amount, and data being shared.
- Supervise sensitive work. If the product offers an active-watch or confirmation mode, use it on sensitive sites. Treat prompts as useful checkpoints, not proof that every risky step will be caught.
- Remove access when it is no longer needed. Revoke the connector or permission after the task if ongoing access has no purpose. The right timing depends on the task and product; there is no universal revocation schedule.
Choose controls based on what the agent needs to do
There is no single best setting for every task. Choose access and oversight according to the task’s necessity and potential impact; these are practical decision axes, not a standardized rating system.
| Decision | Lower exposure | Higher exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Access breadth | Logged-out access, read-only permission, or one specified resource | Read/write access to a broad account or unrelated data |
| Action impact | Lookup, summarizing, or drafting for review | Sending, purchasing, transferring, deleting, or changing account settings |
| Control point | User review and confirmation before consequential actions | Unreviewed execution, especially when tool permissions are broad |
| Persistence | Access limited to the task, then removed where possible | Continuing connector or memory access without a continuing need |
What developers and administrators should secure
For workplace or custom agents, the same principle applies at the system level: grant narrow capabilities and enforce authorization outside the model. OWASP’s agent security guidance covers least privilege, tool permissions, memory, testing, and monitoring. OpenAI’s developer guidance on agent safety addresses handling untrusted inputs and tool use.

- Treat external content as data, not authority. Keep retrieved webpages, emails, and documents out of privileged instruction channels. OpenAI advises against placing untrusted input in higher-priority developer messages.
- Scope tools and identities. Use separate tool sets for different risk levels, restrict access to specific resources, and prefer read-only permissions when writes are unnecessary. A model’s text should not, by itself, authorize a backend operation.
- Constrain execution. Sandbox code or browser interactions and limit filesystem and network access to what the task requires. Controls vary by product: Anthropic’s discussion of filesystem and network isolation, for example, is specific to Claude Code, not a universal feature of account-connected agents. Anthropic: Making Claude Code more secure and autonomous with sandboxing.
- Validate data flows and consequential outputs. Use constrained structured outputs between workflow steps, validate inputs passed to sensitive tools, and separate a decision from execution when an operation is difficult to reverse.
- Protect memory and logs. Isolate memory across users and sessions, set limits and expiration, audit what persists, and avoid recording credentials or sensitive personal data in plain text.
- Test and monitor behavior. Run structured adversarial tests before deployment and after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Monitor for anomalous actions and bound retries, tool chains, and costs.
Understand what safeguards do—and do not—cover
A prompt-injection attack can combine hostile content with a capability that makes the content dangerous, such as sending information or invoking a tool. Narrow permissions reduce the information or actions available to misuse; human review adds a checkpoint for consequential side effects. Neither control establishes that all content the agent reads is trustworthy or that every attack will be detected.
Links deserve particular care. If an agent is induced to request a URL containing user-specific information, the URL itself can become a route for data exposure. OpenAI describes protections for this pathway, while noting that link protections do not make web content accurate or browsing safe in every respect. OpenAI: Keeping your data safe when an AI agent clicks a link.
