If Windows Update started failing after a Windows 11 feature update, first note the full error code, back up important files, and run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter. Then choose a fix based on whether the problem is a failed scan or install, damaged system files, a specific recent update, or the feature-version upgrade itself. Error codes suggest possible causes; they do not prove one diagnosis.
Before troubleshooting: protect files and identify the failure
Back up important personal files before trying repairs or recovery. You can copy them to a separate USB or external drive. Record the complete error code and when it appears: while checking for updates, downloading, installing, or restarting. Also note whether Windows starts normally. These details help distinguish an update-client problem from a driver, storage, boot, or system-component issue.
Keep the PC connected to a stable internet connection and power, check that there is adequate free storage, and make sure you can use an administrator account for steps that require it. On a work- or school-managed PC, contact your IT administrator before changing update or recovery settings.
Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated troubleshooter in the Get Help app. You can also run the troubleshooter from Settings:

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow any instructions, restart the PC when the troubleshooter finishes, and open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates to see whether the problem is resolved.
Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshoot problems updating Windows; the alternative Settings route is also documented in How to use the Windows Update troubleshooter.
Use the error code to choose a targeted fix
Windows Update codes narrow down what to check, but a code is not a guaranteed root-cause diagnosis. Microsoft’s list gives these possible causes and troubleshooting directions:

| Example code | Possible cause listed by Microsoft | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Update files or cache problems | Run the troubleshooter. If indicated, clear the SoftwareDistribution download cache using Microsoft’s procedure. |
| 0x800705b4 | An update took too long or was interrupted | Check the connection, restart, and run the troubleshooter before retrying. |
| 0x80240034 | An incomplete update or connection issue | Check connectivity, restart, and retry with the troubleshooter. |
| 0x800f0922 | Insufficient disk space or a component issue | Check available storage and follow Microsoft’s listed steps; storage is not the only possible cause. |
| 0xC1900101 | An incompatible driver | Check drivers and disconnect nonessential peripherals during an installation attempt. |
| 0x80070057 or 0x80080005 | Corrupted files, permissions, or configuration | Run SFC as an administrator and use the Windows Update troubleshooter. |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped | Check the service status using Microsoft’s instructions. |
For Microsoft’s current code descriptions and linked procedures, see Windows Update error troubleshooting. For driver-related installation failures, Microsoft’s Windows Update error guidance includes additional troubleshooting. Avoid broad registry or service changes that are not part of Microsoft’s guidance.
Repair system files or the Windows Update cache
Run DISM, then System File Checker
If the code or symptoms suggest damaged or missing Windows components, Microsoft directs users to run DISM before System File Checker. Open Command Prompt as an administrator, run the first command, wait for it to finish, then run the second:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthsfc /scannow
Let SFC reach 100% before closing the window. DISM normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. If the update client is unavailable, Microsoft documents using a valid alternate repair source with the /Source and /LimitAccess options; do not guess the source path. Follow Microsoft’s full instructions at Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
Clear the update download cache only when appropriate
For a suspected update-cache failure, Microsoft’s procedure stops the Windows Update service, removes the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution, and starts the service again. Its expanded troubleshooting guidance also gives command-line component-reset steps. These procedures need administrator permissions and care: follow Microsoft’s exact sequence rather than deleting other folders or changing unrelated services. See Microsoft’s update troubleshooting instructions.

Choose recovery based on what caused the problem
The right recovery option depends on whether Windows starts, whether the trigger was an individual update or a version upgrade, and what each option preserves. Prefer the least disruptive applicable choice.
| Option | Best fit | Impact and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Troubleshooter and code-specific checks | Windows starts, but scanning or installing updates fails | Low disruption; built into Windows 11. |
| DISM followed by SFC | Symptoms or code suggest damaged system files or components | Built-in repair tools; requires an elevated Command Prompt. |
| Repair reinstall using Windows Update | A supported Windows 11 installation needs repair | Reinstalls the current version while preserving files, apps, and settings; may be unavailable on managed or ineligible systems. |
| Uninstall a recent update | A particular installed update appears to trigger the problem | Some updates cannot be removed; removing a security update has security implications. |
| Go back to the previous version | The problem began after moving to a new Windows version | Microsoft says this option is available for 10 days after upgrading. |
| Reset or installation media | Other options fail or Windows will not start | More disruptive; reset offers choices about keeping files, while reinstalling from installation media removes everything. |
If one recent update appears to be the trigger
On Windows 11, first consider Fix problems using Windows Update if it is available. Find it under Settings > System > Recovery, then select Reinstall now. This repair reinstalls the current version and preserves personal files, apps, and settings. Availability varies: the option may be absent on managed PCs, on versions older than Windows 11’s 2022 annual update, or on systems without the February 2024 optional update or a later update. Update-management policies can also block it. Microsoft’s details are in Fix problems using Windows Update.

If the repair reinstall is unavailable or does not resolve the issue, Windows provides an option to uninstall a recent update. Some updates cannot be uninstalled. Before removing a security update, consider the security consequences; Microsoft’s instructions are at Uninstall a Windows update.
If the feature-version upgrade itself caused the trouble
If symptoms began after upgrading to a new Windows version, use Go back if the option remains available. Microsoft’s recovery guidance gives a 10-day window after upgrading. This rolls back the version upgrade; it is not the same as uninstalling an individual monthly or quality update. See Recovery options in Windows.
If Windows will not start
Windows Recovery Environment includes recovery options such as uninstalling an update or resetting the PC. A reset can offer a choice to keep personal files or remove everything, while reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything. A BitLocker recovery key may be required for some Recovery Environment paths. Back up what you can and read each on-screen warning before proceeding; Microsoft’s recovery options guide explains the available paths.
