Microsoft 365 subscribers lost access to Publisher after October 1, 2026. Perpetual Publisher versions are different: Microsoft says their support ends October 13, 2026, but they can still be installed and used after that date. If you have a working, licensed Publisher installation, use it now to save important publications as PDFs; that preserves a viewable copy, while editing or rebuilding them in another app requires separate checks.
What the October 2026 dates mean
Microsoft’s US English support notice sets two dates for different licensing situations. Microsoft 365 subscribers cannot access Publisher after October 1, 2026. Support for perpetual Publisher versions ends October 13, 2026, which Microsoft identifies as the end-of-support date for Office LTSC 2021 and Consumer Office 2021. As of October 3, 2026, the Microsoft 365 access date has passed; the perpetual-version support date is still ahead. Microsoft’s product page describes Publisher as PC-only and identifies Publisher 2021 as the latest classic version. It says availability, accessibility, and security will be maintained through retirement, not that a new Microsoft 365 subscription will provide Publisher beyond the retirement date. Preserve `.pub` files while you can open them
Microsoft recommends converting existing Publisher files before October 1, 2026. If you still have a working, licensed Publisher installation, the direct route for retaining a viewable, printable record is to save each publication as a PDF. Keep the original `.pub` file as well: PDF is a viewing and printing format, not a substitute for an editable Publisher project, and Microsoft does not promise that conversion can be reversed.

- Search your PC, OneDrive, and SharePoint for `.pub` files. Microsoft notes that searching for “.Pub” can help locate them.
- In Publisher, open a publication and select File > Save as.
- Choose PDF as the file type, select a destination, and save.
- Open the PDF and check that pages, images, and intended print content appear as expected. Keep an untouched copy of the original `.pub` file.
For multiple publications, Microsoft provides a sample PowerShell script for exporting individual or bulk files to PDF or other formats. Microsoft describes it as instructional and says to modify and test it for your needs. It requires a working, licensed Publisher installation; test a small, representative set first and check for errors or filename collisions before processing a larger collection. Microsoft’s notice includes the sample script.
Choose a route based on what you need to do

When Word or PowerPoint is a reasonable replacement
Microsoft maps common publication tasks to Word or PowerPoint. Treat this as a starting point for creating a new version, not as a promise that an existing `.pub` file will transfer perfectly.

For a complex design—especially one with precise positioning, folds, many graphics, or print-specific requirements—rebuild and proof the publication in the new app rather than assuming a conversion will preserve its layout. Make the choice before converting
- Need visual preservation? Save a PDF from Publisher and retain the original file.
- Need editable text? Open the PDF in Word, then compare the result with the PDF because layout can change.
- Need to keep publishing similar materials? Start a new version in Word or PowerPoint according to Microsoft’s task mapping, and proof the layout for its intended use.
- Need to process many files? Confirm that you have a working, licensed Publisher installation, then test Microsoft’s sample export script on a small set before a bulk run.
