To reopen supported apps after you sign in, go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options and turn on Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in. Windows only promises to resume restartable apps, not every app or the exact contents of every document.
Turn on automatic app resume
- Open the Settings app.
- Select Accounts.
- Open Sign-in options.
- Find Automatically save my restartable apps and restart them when I sign back in and switch it on. Microsoft documents the setting and its location in its sign-in options guidance.
Using a keyboard or screen reader? Tab to the toggle and press Spacebar to change its state, as described in Microsoft’s accessibility instructions.

What the setting restores
The control applies to restartable apps. It is not a guarantee that every app will reopen, that unsaved work will be recovered, or that an app will return to precisely the same screen or state.

File Explorer has a related setting
Do not confuse the restartable-app toggle with Restore previous folder windows at logon. Microsoft’s January 28, 2025 release note for Windows 11 version 24H2, all editions, says enabling the app-resume option turns on specific File Explorer settings and separately identifies “Restore previous folder windows at logon” as the setting for restoring previously open File Explorer tabs. The two labels describe related behavior, not the same control: Microsoft’s KB5050094 release note.

If you cannot find the toggle
The documented route is Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish that the control appears on every Windows 11 build or edition, or on every organization-managed device. If it is missing, the available documentation does not identify a single cause; check your Windows version and whether your organization manages sign-in settings.
