To convert date-like text in Excel, copy a cell containing 0, select the text dates, open Paste Special, choose Values under Paste and Add under Operation, then confirm. Excel may coerce recognizable date text into date serial values. If the cells show numbers afterward, apply a date format. This shortcut is not a universal parser: confirm that Excel interpreted the dates the way your source intended before relying on them.
Use Paste Special to add zero to text dates
- Enter
0in an empty cell and copy it. - Select the cells containing date-like text. For a large range, check a few representative entries first.
- Open Paste Special. In the dialog, choose Values under Paste and Add under Operation, then confirm.
- Check the result. If Excel displays serial numbers, select the converted cells and apply an appropriate date format, such as Short Date or Long Date.
The idea is coercion: adding zero does not change a number, and the Add operation can prompt Excel to interpret recognized date text as a numeric value. A similar formula for a single cell is =A1+0. This method is described in an Excel tutorial; Microsoft’s reviewed support pages document date serials and other conversion methods, but do not confirm that Paste Special Add behaves identically in every Excel version or platform. How to tell whether Excel converted the values
Excel stores dates as sequential serial numbers so they can be used in calculations. In the default Windows 1900 date system, January 1, 1900 is serial 1; Microsoft gives January 1, 2008 as serial 39448. A number showing after conversion may therefore be a valid date value with a General or numeric format, rather than a failed conversion. Apply a date format and confirm the displayed date. Check locale and year before converting a range
A string such as 03/04/2024 can mean March 4 or 3 April. Excel’s interpretation can depend on the computer’s date settings, so confirm the convention used by the source data before converting. Check a few dates whose intended day and month are known. Formatting changes the display, not a date that Excel parsed incorrectly. Use four-digit years whenever possible. Two-digit years can be interpreted with an unintended century, and a DATEVALUE string without a year uses the computer’s current year. Use DATEVALUE for recognizable date text
Microsoft documents DATEVALUE(date_text) as a way to convert text representing a date into a serial number Excel recognizes as a date. It returns #VALUE! for dates outside the documented range in the default Windows date system. When the string has a known structure such as YYYYMMDD, extracting the year, month, and day and passing them to DATE avoids asking Excel to infer their order. Use Text to Columns or Error Checking for supported cases
Text to Columns may help when the column has a consistent structure, but inspect the converted dates because locale rules still affect interpretation. If Excel flags a two-digit-year text date, its Error Checking option can convert it; choose that only when you know the intended century. Verify the dates before using them
- Check a few known dates against the source, especially where day and month could be reversed.
- Confirm the year is present and has the intended century.
- Apply a date format to distinguish a serial value from its display.
- Test whether converted values sort and calculate as dates if that is the reason for converting them.
