To enroll a personally owned Windows device that is already registered with Microsoft Entra ID, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school > Connect and sign in with your organization account. If your organization has configured Intune automatic enrollment for your account, the connection flow can enroll the device in Intune MDM too. Entra registration alone does not mean Intune manages the device.
Registration and Intune enrollment are different
Microsoft Entra registration associates a device with an organization; it does not, by itself, enroll the device in mobile device management (MDM). Intune enrollment creates a management relationship that lets the organization apply device policies, such as requirements for encryption, passwords, and security software. Microsoft states that “Microsoft Entra Registration isn’t the same as device enrollment.” Microsoft Learn: What are Microsoft Entra registered devices?

That distinction matters for a personal device: seeing it as registered in Entra is not proof that it appears as enrolled or managed in Intune. Entra-registered devices enrolled through the BYOD process are marked as personally owned in Intune. Microsoft Learn: Windows enrollment methods

Connect the work account on Windows
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts, then Access work or school.
- Select Connect.
- Enter the work or school account your organization uses for Microsoft 365 and complete the sign-in and authentication prompts.
- If enrollment begins, allow it to finish and review any setup status displayed by Windows. If the account connects but no MDM enrollment occurs, ask your administrator whether automatic enrollment is enabled for your account or whether you need a separate MDM enrollment step.
Windows labels can differ by version. Use Connect for this account-connection flow; do not select Join this device to Microsoft Entra ID unless your organization specifically intends to Entra join the device. Joining changes the device’s relationship to the organization and is a different action from connecting a work account on an existing registered personal device. What determines whether the connection also enrolls the device?
Automatic MDM enrollment depends on the organization’s tenant configuration and the user’s eligibility—not simply on a successful sign-in. The administrator needs to configure Intune for enrollment, have Intune set as the MDM authority, and ensure the user is appropriately licensed and included in the enrollment scope. Microsoft’s Windows automatic-enrollment guidance lists an Intune subscription and Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2, or a trial, as prerequisites; administrators should verify entitlements against their organization’s current plan. MDM user scope
The administrator’s Microsoft Intune MDM user scope controls which users are targeted for automatic enrollment: None disables it, Some targets selected users, and All targets all users. A user outside the configured scope may be able to connect the account without automatic Intune enrollment. Microsoft Learn: Enroll a Windows device automatically using Group Policy

WIP scope and personal devices
For personal devices, overlapping Windows Information Protection (WIP) and MDM scopes can affect enrollment. Microsoft documents that when a BYOD user is in both scopes, the WIP scope can take precedence, preventing device-management enrollment. The administrator should check the user’s group membership and the WIP scope rather than repeatedly retrying the Windows connection flow. - Scope or tenant setup: Confirm Intune is configured as the MDM authority, automatic enrollment is enabled, and the user is included in the MDM scope.
- License: Confirm the user has the required Intune entitlement under the organization’s current plan.
- WIP overlap or enrollment restrictions: Check whether WIP scope or an enrollment restriction is preventing MDM enrollment.
- Existing connections or management: On the device, check for an existing organization account connection or management by another MDM provider. Microsoft’s Intune enrollment guidance says to unenroll a device from its existing provider before enrolling it in Intune; the required recovery can depend on platform and scenario. Windows is listed among platforms that do not generally require a factory reset for Intune enrollment, but that does not remove the need to address existing management.
- Sign-in or account issue: Verify the organization account was entered correctly and is recognized, and complete any required authentication prompts.
- Windows edition or enrollment path: Microsoft’s Windows guidance identifies Windows Home as unsupported for the Entra join flow. That specific limitation should not be treated as a blanket ban on every MDM-only enrollment method; ask the administrator which enrollment path applies to the device.
For an unresolved case, give the administrator the Windows edition, the account used, whether the device is already connected to another work or school account, and whether another management provider is installed. Those details help distinguish an account-connection problem from an enrollment-scope or device-conflict problem.
