Windows Latest reports that a hidden Windows 11 setting can replace taskbar hover thumbnails with a compact list of open-window titles. The option was found in an Experimental-channel build; it is a limited resemblance to an older Windows taskbar behavior, not a return of the Windows XP interface. Microsoft has not confirmed that it will reach general release.
What Windows 11 taskbar feature is being tested?
In a report published October 7, 2026, Windows Latest says it found a hidden “Show taskbar previews as” setting in Windows 11 Experimental build 26340.9596. The setting offers Thumbnail and List choices under Settings > Personalization > Taskbar. Windows Latest’s report says the outlet enabled and tried the options on a test PC; this is not an independent test by this publication.

With Thumbnail selected, hovering over an app icon shows a visual preview of its open window. With List selected, the hover display is a compact row containing the app icon and window title. Windows Latest says it tested the list with the About Windows dialog opened using winver, and saw “About Windows” as the title.

The report says Thumbnail was the default in the build it observed. The hidden setting was enabled using ViveTool, a third-party utility; that enabling method is not supported by Microsoft and is not an official setup instruction for ordinary users.

Why is the option being compared with Windows XP?
Windows XP could group taskbar buttons when the taskbar became crowded. Selecting a grouped button opened a menu of window titles. Later Windows versions introduced live thumbnail previews, which offer a visual rather than text-based way to identify a window.
The reported List choice has a similar text-first feel, but the resemblance is limited to how open windows are identified from the taskbar. It does not restore Windows XP’s taskbar or its overall interface.

Which preview mode is more useful?

List mode may show less of a window’s contents during screen sharing, but it is not a privacy guarantee: titles themselves can expose information. The report describes observations and practical implications, not a comparative usability study.

That is not established. Microsoft’s release notes identify build 26340.9596 as an Experimental-channel build based on Windows 11 version 26H2, dated October 2, 2026. The notes cover Unicode, File Explorer, Settings, and Recovery changes, but do not mention the reported taskbar list option. Microsoft’s Windows Insider release notes caution that “Features and experiences included in these builds might never get released as we try out different concepts and get feedback.” The option could change, be removed, or remain limited to Insiders.

What is the separate Mobile devices tile?
Windows Latest also reports a Mobile devices tile in Quick Settings, separate from the taskbar preview choice. It describes controls for a linked phone, including Do Not Disturb, ringer volume, and playing a sound to locate the device. The outlet says it tried the controls with a linked Android phone; support for those specific controls on iPhone is not established by the report.
Can you make Windows 11 look like Windows XP?
Not with Windows 11’s built-in personalization settings alone. In a Microsoft Q&A response dated March 22, 2026, a Microsoft External Staff moderator says built-in options can change the wallpaper, sounds, cursors, and accent colors, but not the Start menu or taskbar. Third-party tools can recreate parts of a classic appearance, but visual customization does not install Windows XP. Read the Microsoft Q&A response.
