Microsoft Edge and Chrome use different layers of screenshot control. Edge’s DisableScreenshots browser policy blocks common keyboard and extension capture paths, while Edge for Business can apply a Microsoft Purview sensitivity-label control that turns a protected window black during a capture attempt. Chrome’s Screenshot prevention is a managed Chrome Enterprise Premium policy that applies by URL pattern; it covers keyboard shortcuts, apps and extensions using Chrome capture APIs, and can also prevent screen sharing on Windows. Chrome’s documentation does not promise the same black-screen effect.
The right choice depends on whether you need a general browser policy, label-aware protection for Microsoft 365 content, URL-based exceptions, screen-share control, or a visible watermark. None of these controls should be treated as protection against every external camera, operating-system or second-device capture method.

What Microsoft Edge actually offers
Edge’s DisableScreenshots browser policy
DisableScreenshots is a Boolean browser policy. When an administrator enables it, Edge prevents screenshots made through keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs. Leaving the policy unconfigured or disabling it allows those browser capture routes. Microsoft documents support on Windows and macOS from Edge 77, and on Android from Edge 146. iOS is not supported.
The policy is deliberately narrower than a full content-protection system. Microsoft warns that Web Capture, operating-system methods and capture functions provided by other applications may still obtain the page. In other words, the policy closes defined browser interfaces; it does not make pixels physically inaccessible.

Microsoft’s documentation also says that, from Edge 154, the policy prevents extensions from attaching the debugger through chrome.debugger.attach(). That closes a separate extension-based inspection route that could otherwise be used to access or manipulate a page.
Edge for Business and Microsoft Purview protection
Edge for Business has a separate enforcement path for sensitivity-labeled Microsoft 365 content. Microsoft describes it for labeled Outlook on the web content: Edge for Business can block copying, block printing according to the sensitivity label, and turn the browser window into a black screen during a screenshot attempt.
This is not the same setting as DisableScreenshots. It is label-driven and tied to Microsoft Purview enforcement. Microsoft says the screenshot-blocking capability is exclusive to Edge for Business with a Microsoft 365 E5 license and requires the Protect labeled content in Microsoft 365 online setting. A normal Edge installation, an unlabeled page or an unsupported Microsoft 365 scenario should not be assumed to receive the black-screen behavior.

What Chrome’s screenshot restriction does
Screenshot prevention in Chrome Enterprise Premium
Google documents Screenshot prevention as a policy for managed Chrome users and browsers under Chrome Enterprise Premium. Administrators can configure it to prevent screenshots on all websites except specified URL patterns, or to disable prevention generally except for specified URLs. That URL-pattern model is the major scope difference from Edge’s Boolean DisableScreenshots policy.

Chrome’s documented capture surface includes screenshots made with keyboard shortcuts, applications and extensions that use Chrome’s capture API. On Windows and Mac, screenshot prevention is supported. Screen-share prevention is supported on Windows; Google lists Linux as unavailable for this setting. The platform qualification matters: a policy assignment that works for a Windows user cannot be assumed to provide the same screen-share control on Linux.
Google’s documentation explains the prevention control but does not promise that a failed capture will be replaced by a black browser window. Do not configure Chrome expecting the visual result described for Edge for Business and Purview.
Chrome’s custom watermark is a separate control
Chrome also provides a Custom watermark appearance control. Google documents it for ChromeOS and for Chrome browser on Windows, Mac and Linux, with controls such as font size and opacity. The documented defaults are a 24-point font, 6% white-outline opacity and 4% dark-fill opacity.

Choosing the right control for a real policy goal
Use Edge DisableScreenshots for a broad browser capture restriction
Choose the Edge policy when the requirement is simple: managed Edge users should not use the normal keyboard screenshot shortcuts or extension screenshot APIs. It is suitable when the organization controls the browser and wants one browser-level switch rather than a list of websites.
Before rollout, confirm that every target device is on a supported Edge version and exclude iOS from the expected coverage. Decide how the organization will handle Web Capture and operating-system tools, because Microsoft identifies those as residual capture paths. If extensions are part of the threat model, include the Edge 154 debugger-attachment change in your validation plan.
Use Edge for Business/Purview when the decision follows a sensitivity label
Choose the Purview route when the protection must travel with labeled Microsoft 365 content and the organization needs coordinated copy, print and screenshot enforcement. The black browser window is a user-visible signal that the labeled-content rule, rather than a generic browser switch, is active.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Verify the licensing and setting prerequisites first. A user who opens an ordinary public website, an unlabeled page or content outside the supported Microsoft 365 scenario should not be used to test this feature. Test with an actual sensitivity-labeled Outlook on the web item in Edge for Business.
Use Chrome Screenshot prevention when URL exceptions are central
Chrome is the better fit when administrators need rules such as “prevent screenshots everywhere except these URL patterns” or the inverse “allow screenshots everywhere except these URLs.” Define the URL scope before evaluating user reports; a page that falls into an exception is behaving according to policy, not necessarily failing.
Use the Windows screen-share option only for Windows users and devices covered by the policy. Do not promise equivalent screen-share prevention to Linux users, because Google lists that setting as unavailable on Linux.
Add a watermark when attribution or deterrence matters
Use Chrome’s custom watermark appearance when the objective is to make a captured image traceable or visibly discourage redistribution. Configure its appearance separately from screenshot prevention. A watermark can remain visible in an allowed screenshot, which is often the intended outcome for collaboration and incident investigation.

Deployment and validation checklist
The consoles and enrollment systems differ between Edge and Chrome, but the validation logic is comparable. Work through these checks before announcing that screenshots are “blocked.”
- Define the protected asset. Decide whether the rule covers every page in a managed browser, a URL pattern, or only sensitivity-labeled Microsoft 365 content. This determines whether Edge’s browser policy, Edge for Business/Purview, Chrome URL-scoped prevention, or a combination is appropriate.
- Confirm management and entitlement. Check that the browser is managed by the organization. For Edge Purview protection, confirm Edge for Business, Microsoft 365 E5 and the Protect labeled content in Microsoft 365 online setting. For Chrome, confirm Chrome Enterprise Premium and the managed user or browser assignment.
- Check platform and version. Record the operating system and browser version for every test device. Apply the Edge version thresholds—77 on Windows and macOS, 146 on Android—and mark iOS as unsupported for
DisableScreenshots. For Chrome, separate Windows and Mac screenshot tests from Windows screen-share tests and do not count Linux as supported for that screen-share setting. - Test each capture surface. Try the keyboard shortcut, a permitted or blocked extension, an application using the documented capture API, and screen sharing where relevant. On Edge, test Web Capture and an operating-system capture tool separately so the documented residual paths are visible to users and administrators.
- Test the visual result. For labeled Edge for Business content, verify whether the browser window becomes black during the screenshot attempt. For Chrome, verify that the capture is prevented or allowed according to the URL rule, but do not treat the absence of a black window as a failure because Google does not document that effect.
- Test exceptions deliberately. Use one URL that should be protected and one URL that should be exempted. A Chrome exception is part of the design; Edge’s cited
DisableScreenshotspolicy does not describe URL exceptions. - Record what remains possible. Document whether Web Capture, operating-system tools, other applications, screen sharing, or a camera can still produce an image. This record prevents a browser policy from being marketed internally as absolute copy protection.
Troubleshooting common results
An Edge keyboard shortcut still captures the page
- Check that
DisableScreenshotsis enabled rather than unconfigured or disabled. - Confirm the device is running a supported Edge version and is not iOS.
- Test the same page with a browser extension and with Web Capture. Microsoft’s warning means Web Capture or an operating-system method may still succeed even when the keyboard path is blocked.
- If the concern is extension inspection rather than a screenshot API, verify that the Edge version is 154 or later for the documented debugger-attachment protection.
The Edge window does not turn black
- Check whether the test is in Edge for Business, not an ordinary Edge profile.
- Confirm the content carries a supported Microsoft sensitivity label and that the test is an applicable Microsoft 365 scenario such as labeled Outlook on the web content.
- Verify Microsoft 365 E5 and the Protect labeled content in Microsoft 365 online setting.
- Do not use an unlabeled public website as evidence for or against the Purview behavior; that page is outside the described label-driven scope.
Chrome blocks screenshots on one site but not another
- Inspect the administrator’s URL-pattern mode. Chrome can protect all sites except listed patterns or protect only listed patterns.
- Check whether the user and browser are managed and entitled to Chrome Enterprise Premium.
- Confirm that the test uses a covered keyboard, application or Chrome capture API path. A different external capture mechanism may not be governed by the documented policy.
Chrome screenshots are prevented but screen sharing is not
- Separate the screenshot policy from the screen-share policy; they are related controls with different support statements.
- Confirm that the device is Windows for the documented screen-share prevention capability.
- If the device is Linux, treat the unavailable setting as an expected platform limitation rather than a transient policy failure.
A watermark appears even though screenshots are still possible
That is consistent with the design. Chrome’s Custom watermark appearance controls what the watermark looks like; it does not state that capture is disabled. Pair it with Screenshot prevention when both attribution and blocking are required.
Security limits and operational expectations
Browser screenshot controls are managed capture controls, not a replacement for access control or data-loss prevention. A policy can stop a documented keyboard shortcut or browser API while leaving a camera, a second device, an operating-system function or an application outside the browser’s control. The residual risk is especially important for high-value documents, where a permitted viewer can always reproduce information by hand or with an external device.
Use sensitivity labels and least-privilege access to reduce who can open protected content in the first place. Use audit and incident processes to investigate attempted sharing. Communicate the exact scope to users: “screenshots are blocked in these browser paths on these platforms” is accurate; “the screen cannot be copied” is not.
Bottom line for administrators
Edge is the only option in this comparison with a documented black-window response, and that response belongs to Edge for Business’s Purview enforcement for supported sensitivity-labeled Microsoft 365 content—not to the general DisableScreenshots policy. Chrome offers the more explicit URL-exception model and combines screenshot prevention with Windows screen-share prevention, while its configurable watermark is a separate, non-blocking signal. Select the control by content scope, capture method, platform and licensing requirement, then validate the external capture paths that browser policy cannot govern.
