Microsoft Edge Warns Manifest V2 Extensions May Be Removed: What Users and Admins Need to Know

Microsoft has begun warning about Manifest V2 extensions in Edge, but the warning does not mean an extension has already been removed. The published timeline puts user-facing warnings in a phased rollout, expects enterprise deprecation to begin in early 2027, and still lists the date for ending V2 updates as not set. What happens next depends on whether you use an extension, publish one, or manage Edge for an organization.

What the Edge Manifest V2 warning means

Manifest V2 is an earlier extension platform version. Microsoft is phasing it out in favor of Manifest V3. A warning signals that an extension still uses V2; it is not proof that the extension has stopped working or that every user will lose access at once. Microsoft has not published a final consumer removal date in its current timeline.

Microsoft’s timeline says Partner Center warnings for V2 publishers appeared in August 2026. Warnings began appearing for some users on Edge’s Manage extensions page and on the Edge Add-ons website in mid-September 2026. The wording “some users” matters: the timeline does not say that every user or every listing sees a warning at the same time. Microsoft’s Manifest V3 migration timeline is the current source for these milestones.

Manifest V2 deprecation timeline

Milestone What Microsoft says What it means
July 2022 Partner Center and the Edge Add-ons website stopped accepting new V2 extensions. New extensions must use V3.
August 2026 Partner Center began displaying V2 deprecation warnings for affected extensions. Publishers are being warned; this is not the end of support.
Mid-September 2026 Warnings began appearing for some users in Edge’s Manage extensions page and on the Edge Add-ons website. The rollout is not described as universal.
Early 2027 Microsoft expects V2 deprecation to begin for enterprise customers. This is an expected start, not a confirmed universal cutoff date.
Not set Microsoft has not set the date when Partner Center and the Add-ons website will stop accepting updates to V2 extensions. The final update cutoff remains unannounced.

Microsoft’s general policy page previously said that a migration timeline had not been established in that policy description. Its more specific migration timeline now gives warning milestones and an expected enterprise start, while leaving the V2 update cutoff not set. These statements describe different levels of detail rather than a single confirmed end date. The policy documentation covers administrative controls.

What to do if you use an Edge extension

  1. Open the extension’s listing in the Edge Add-ons website or check messages from its publisher.
  2. Look for a Manifest V3 version and read its feature information before switching.
  3. If you see a warning, treat it as notice that the extension still uses V2—not as confirmation that it has already been removed.

Microsoft has not set a final consumer cutoff date, so the warning does not establish how long a particular installed V2 extension will keep working. Nor does the migration guidance establish that every extension has a V3 version or that a replacement will preserve every feature. Check with the publisher if you depend on a specific capability.

What extension publishers should do

Microsoft’s guidance is to migrate V2 extensions to V3 and submit the migrated version through Partner Center. New V2 extensions have not been accepted since July 2022; the date for ending updates to existing V2 extensions is still not set. Microsoft’s instruction is direct: “If your extension still uses Manifest V2, migrate to Manifest V3 now.” The migration guidance explains the transition.

For the submission process, Microsoft says an extension update is published through Partner Center. Certification can take up to seven business days; this is process guidance, not a guarantee that every submission will be approved or reviewed within that period. What Edge administrators should review

Organizations should review the ExtensionManifestV2Availability policy alongside their other extension policies. Microsoft documents options for allowing V2, disabling it, or allowing V2 only for forced-installed extensions. The policy is supported on Windows and macOS in Edge version 123 or later, and is not supported on Android or iOS. Microsoft’s policy reference provides the setting details.

The policy is not a promise of indefinite V2 support. Microsoft says the Enable and Disable options will eventually be treated like the policy is unset after V2 support is turned off by default. The forced-extension-only option is described as remaining available. Because enterprise deprecation is expected to begin in early 2027, administrators should check the current policy documentation as Microsoft’s schedule evolves.

Why Microsoft is moving extensions to Manifest V3

Microsoft says it adopted Manifest V3 to reduce web fragmentation for developers and to enhance privacy, security, and performance for end users. Those are Microsoft’s stated goals; they do not demonstrate that every extension will behave identically after migration or that every V2 feature has a one-to-one V3 equivalent. Microsoft’s migration documentation describes its rationale and guidance.
