Microsoft Edge vs. Chrome: Privacy Settings and Data Collection Compared

Edge and Chrome do not have a single privacy winner. This guide compares their tracking, cookie, telemetry, search, security and private-browsing controls so you can choose settings for the data flow you actually want to limit.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Short answer: neither Microsoft Edge nor Google Chrome is universally more private. Edge gives you an explicit three-level tracking-prevention system and controls for optional diagnostics and Microsoft personalization. Chrome provides third-party-cookie controls, Safe Browsing choices, usage-reporting switches, URL-sharing controls and preload settings. The better choice depends on which data flow you want to reduce and which site-compatibility trade-offs you will accept.

Both browsers can still expose activity to websites, search providers, network operators and their own vendors. Use the settings below to compare those separate paths instead of treating “privacy” as a single score.

What “privacy” means in this comparison

A browser handles several different kinds of information. A setting that limits one kind does not automatically limit the others.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Local traces: history, cookies, cached files, passwords and form data stored on the device.
  • Website tracking: cookies and other mechanisms used by sites or embedded third parties to recognize activity across pages.
  • Search-provider requests: text typed into the address bar and, under some Chrome settings, the page URL being viewed.
  • Vendor telemetry: diagnostic data, crash reports, usage statistics and feature-improvement information sent to Microsoft or Google.
  • Security checks: information shared so SmartScreen or Safe Browsing can identify malicious sites, downloads and extensions.
  • Account personalization: browsing activity used to tailor Microsoft or Google services when you have enabled the relevant account or personalization controls.
  • Network visibility: information that can remain visible to your employer, school, internet provider or the sites you visit even when local history is hidden.

Edge and Chrome document controls for these areas differently. A fair comparison therefore asks, “Which browser gives me the control I need for this data flow?” rather than “Which browser collects less data overall?”

At-a-glance comparison

Privacy area Microsoft Edge Google Chrome What it means in practice
Cross-site tracking Basic, Balanced and Strict tracking-prevention levels. Documented controls focus on allowing or blocking third-party cookies and creating exceptions. Tracker prevention and cookie blocking overlap but are not the same technology.
Third-party cookies Separate cookie controls let you view, block and delete cookies. Third-party cookies can be allowed or blocked, with site exceptions and temporary allowances. Blocking can make logins, carts or embedded content fail.
Diagnostics Some diagnostic data is required for security, updates and normal operation; optional sharing is configurable. “Help improve Chrome’s features and performance” controls usage statistics and crash reports. Reliability telemetry is different from account history or a website’s own tracking.
Address-bar suggestions Typed characters can be sent to the default search provider when suggestions are enabled. Typed text goes to the default search provider for relevant suggestions; additional URL sharing can occur under a Google setting. Your chosen search provider’s privacy policy matters even when you are not signed in.
Personalization With permission, browsing activity can personalize Microsoft Edge and services such as ads, search, shopping and news. Signing in enables additional personalization; usage-reporting controls are separate from Google account activity. Sync, account activity, cookies and telemetry are distinct choices.
Security scanning Edge uses Microsoft Defender SmartScreen; the cited documentation does not establish an apples-to-apples transfer comparison with Safe Browsing. Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing have different data-sharing levels. More protective scanning can require sending more information.
Private windows InPrivate removes listed local data after all InPrivate windows close. Incognito limits local traces and blocks third-party cookies by default according to Chrome’s cookie documentation. Neither mode makes you anonymous to sites or networks.
Preloading No directly comparable behavior is established by the cited Edge material. Preload can use cookies and may send pages through Google in encrypted form to conceal identity from sites; it can be disabled. Disable it if predictive loading is not worth the additional data flow.

Edge tracking prevention: Basic, Balanced or Strict?

Edge’s clearest anti-tracking distinction is its three-level prevention system. Microsoft describes the levels as follows:

Basic

Basic blocks potentially harmful trackers but allows most other trackers, including trackers used for personalized content and advertising. It is the least disruptive option when compatibility is your priority.

Balanced (Recommended)

Balanced blocks potentially harmful trackers and trackers from sites you have not visited. Microsoft labels it “Balanced (Recommended)” because it aims to reduce cross-site tracking without breaking as many pages as the strictest setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Strict

Strict blocks most cross-site trackers. Microsoft warns that some pages, sign-ins and embedded features may stop working. You may need to add a trusted-site exception, which allows all trackers on that site, including potentially harmful ones.

These descriptions are Microsoft’s documented behavior, not an independent tracker-blocking benchmark. The useful decision is practical: start with Balanced, move to Strict when stronger blocking matters more than seamless compatibility, and use exceptions only for sites you understand and trust.

How to change Edge tracking prevention

  1. Open Edge’s settings and go to Privacy, search, and services.
  2. Find Tracking prevention.
  3. Select Basic, Balanced or Strict.
  4. Review the exceptions list if a site breaks. An exception permits all trackers on that site, so remove it when it is no longer needed.

Labels and available controls can differ by operating system, Edge version, region, account state or organization policy. On a managed computer, an administrator may lock the setting.

Cookies: why Edge and Chrome controls are not interchangeable

Cookies are one tracking mechanism, not a complete inventory of tracking. A browser can block third-party cookies while a site still collects information directly as a first party or uses other recognition methods.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edge cookie controls

Edge lets you view, block and delete cookies and site data. Microsoft warns that blocking cookies can prevent pages from displaying correctly or can disrupt features that depend on stored session information. Use the cookie-management interface when you need to remove a specific site’s data or investigate a broken login, rather than treating a global block as a guarantee that all tracking has stopped.

Chrome third-party-cookie controls

Chrome allows you to block or allow third-party cookies, add site exceptions and remove stored cookies and site data. Google explains that third-party cookies can personalize advertising and learn about activity across sites. It also warns that blocking them can cause sites to behave unexpectedly.

  1. Open Chrome’s settings and locate the Privacy and security section.
  2. Open the cookie or third-party-cookie control shown for your platform.
  3. Choose whether third-party cookies are allowed or blocked.
  4. Add an exception for a site that genuinely requires them, or grant a temporary allowance while completing a task.
  5. Remove the exception afterward if you do not want the site to retain that access.

Chrome’s labels and defaults can change by platform and release. Check the wording on your own computer or phone before assuming that a desktop setting also applies to mobile.

Choosing between tracker prevention and cookie blocking

  • Choose Edge Balanced when you want a broad, vendor-documented tracker-prevention mode with a compatibility-conscious default.
  • Choose Edge Strict when reducing cross-site trackers is more important than avoiding occasional breakage.
  • Choose Chrome’s third-party-cookie block when your main concern is cross-site cookies and you are prepared to create exceptions.
  • Do not describe either choice as “stopping all tracking.” The controls cover different mechanisms.

What Edge sends to Microsoft

Required and optional diagnostic data

Microsoft says Edge collects some diagnostic data because it is needed to keep the browser secure, updated and functioning as expected. Optional diagnostic sharing can be controlled in Privacy, search, and services. Microsoft notes that the available controls vary in some Windows configurations and may be managed by an organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft also documents a platform-specific change: as of March 6, 2024, Edge diagnostic data is collected separately from Windows diagnostic data for specified Windows versions in the European Economic Area. That date and geography do not establish a universal rule for every device.

Address-bar suggestions

When search suggestions are enabled, Edge can send characters typed in the address bar to your default search provider so it can generate suggestions. This can happen even when you are not signed in to a Microsoft account. Turn off search suggestions if you do not want partial queries transmitted for that purpose, while recognizing that the exact label and location can vary by version.

InPrivate and Guest browsing turn off automatic suggestions and do not collect information about visited websites for that feature, according to Microsoft. Other browser-use information may still be collected under diagnostic settings.

Personalized Microsoft services

A separate Edge setting allows browsing activity—including history, usage, favorites, web content and other browsing data—to personalize Edge and Microsoft services such as ads, search, shopping and news. Microsoft says this use occurs only when you grant permission and leave the control enabled. You can turn it off independently of cookie settings and tracking prevention.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft says InPrivate and Guest browsing are not used for this personalization. That statement concerns this documented personalization feature; it does not mean that sites, networks or all browser telemetry stop seeing activity.

What Chrome sends to Google

Usage statistics and crash reports

Chrome’s Help improve Chrome’s features and performance setting periodically sends usage statistics and crash reports when enabled. A separate Make searches and browsing better option can share additional statistics about sites visited and how they are used.

  1. Open Chrome settings.
  2. Go to the Google services area, or the similarly named privacy-and-services page shown by your release.
  3. Review the usage-statistics, crash-reporting and search-and-browsing-improvement switches separately.
  4. Disable the optional controls whose data sharing you do not want.

Turning off usage reporting does not delete activity held by websites, your search provider or a signed-in Google account. It only changes the documented Chrome sharing choice.

Search suggestions and page URLs

Chrome sends typed text to the default search provider when relevant suggestions are enabled. Google also documents an additional case: when Google is the default search engine and Make searches and browsing better is enabled, the current page URL may be sent to improve suggestion relevance. If another search engine is your default, suggestion queries are handled under that provider’s privacy policy.

This creates two separate decisions: whether to show address-bar suggestions and whether to allow the extra Chrome improvement feature. Review both instead of assuming that signing out alone stops suggestion requests.

Preloading

Chrome’s preload behavior can use cookies and may encrypt and send pages through Google to hide your identity from the sites being preloaded. The option can be disabled. Preloading may make navigation feel faster, but it is an avoidable data flow for users who do not value predictive loading.

Safe Browsing and SmartScreen: protection has a privacy cost

Chrome Standard Safe Browsing

Standard Safe Browsing checks sites, extensions and downloads against unsafe-site lists. Chrome can use locally stored lists; when a site is not on a local list, Google says Chrome may send an obfuscated portion of the URL through a privacy server that hides your IP address. If suspicious behavior is detected, additional information such as URLs or small page-content portions may be sent directly.

Chrome Enhanced Safe Browsing

Google states: “Enhanced protection sends more information about your activity to Google in real time to offer stronger, more customized protection.” The documented information can include visited URLs, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity and system information. Google says it uses that information for security protection and improvement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enhanced protection is therefore a deliberate safety-versus-data-sharing choice. Do not treat it as a pure privacy upgrade or disable all protection without considering the increased exposure to malicious sites and downloads.

Edge SmartScreen

Microsoft’s broader Edge privacy guidance identifies Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. The cited material does not establish an equivalent, measured comparison of SmartScreen’s data transfers against Chrome’s Safe Browsing modes. Keep security scanning enabled unless you have a specific, informed reason not to, and compare the published behavior rather than claiming one vendor sends less data overall.

InPrivate and Incognito: what private windows actually do

Edge InPrivate

After all InPrivate windows close, Edge says it deletes browsing and download history, cookies and site data, cached files, passwords, autofill data, site permissions and hosted-app data associated with the session.

That is local cleanup, not anonymity. Microsoft explicitly warns that websites, schools, workplaces and internet providers may still be able to access activity. InPrivate also does not add ad blocking or stop sites from personalizing content during the session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome Incognito

Incognito is likewise designed primarily to limit local traces. Chrome’s cookie documentation says third-party cookies are blocked by default in Incognito. Sites can still see requests from the session, and network operators can still observe traffic patterns or destinations permitted by their access.

Neither mode is a VPN, a way to conceal activity from an employer or school, or a guarantee that no information is transmitted. Use a private window on a shared device when you do not want the browser to retain ordinary local history; do not use it as a promise of network anonymity.

A practical privacy setup for each browser

Edge setup

  1. In Privacy, search, and services, set Tracking prevention to Balanced first.
  2. Use Strict if stronger cross-site blocking is worth troubleshooting broken pages; add narrowly scoped exceptions only when necessary.
  3. Review cookie controls and delete site data for accounts or sites you no longer use.
  4. Turn off optional diagnostic sharing if you do not want it, while leaving required security and update data in place.
  5. Disable address-bar search suggestions if you do not want typed characters sent to the default search provider.
  6. Turn off the Microsoft personalization control unless you want browsing activity used for Microsoft ads, search, shopping or news personalization.
  7. Keep SmartScreen enabled unless you understand the protection you are giving up.

Chrome setup

  1. In Privacy and security, review third-party-cookie controls.
  2. Block third-party cookies if reducing cross-site cookie sharing is your priority, then create exceptions only for sites that fail.
  3. In Google services, review Help improve Chrome’s features and performance and disable optional usage statistics or crash reports if desired.
  4. Review Make searches and browsing better; disable it if you do not want the additional browsing statistics and, in the documented Google-default case, page-URL sharing.
  5. Turn off relevant address-bar suggestion or preload options if predictive features are not worth their data flows.
  6. Choose Standard rather than Enhanced Safe Browsing if you prefer less real-time activity sharing, accepting that Enhanced is designed to provide stronger, more customized protection.

Which browser should you choose?

Choose Edge when…

  • You want a clearly labeled Basic/Balanced/Strict tracker-prevention choice.
  • You prefer a recommended middle setting and are willing to handle exceptions for a few broken sites.
  • You want a separate Microsoft personalization switch that explicitly covers browsing activity and Microsoft services.

Choose Chrome when…

  • Your main goal is controlling third-party cookies with per-site exceptions.
  • You want to choose between Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing based on the amount of real-time information shared.
  • You want distinct switches for usage statistics, crash reports, search-and-browsing improvement, URL sharing and preload behavior.

Use either browser with a data-specific plan when…

  • You need private windows only to reduce local traces on a shared device.
  • You are mainly concerned about your search provider, since address-bar queries can be sent regardless of which browser brand you use.
  • You use a managed work or school device where administrators can override settings.

Regional, platform and account caveats

Defaults and labels can differ by operating system, browser version, location, account state and organizational management. Microsoft’s diagnostic documentation includes Windows and European Economic Area qualifications, and some settings can be controlled by an organization. Google’s cited help pages cover computer and mobile instructions but do not establish identical defaults on every platform.

Microsoft’s Global Privacy Control support documentation says Edge can send a signal expressing that you do not want data sold or shared for targeted advertising. The page states that this setting is currently available in the United States, and websites may or may not honor the signal. Treat availability as regional and check the current control on your own installation.

Bottom line: compare the data flow, not the logo

Edge and Chrome both provide meaningful privacy controls, but they organize them around different mechanisms. Edge’s strongest differentiator is its three-level tracking prevention and explicit Microsoft personalization controls. Chrome’s strongest differentiators are third-party-cookie exceptions, separate usage-reporting switches, configurable Safe Browsing levels, URL-sharing behavior and preload controls.

For a practical starting point, use Edge Balanced or Chrome with third-party cookies blocked, then add exceptions only when a site requires them. Review address-bar suggestions, optional telemetry, personalization and security-sharing settings independently. Private windows can clean up local traces, but neither InPrivate nor Incognito hides activity from websites or network operators. Because settings and defaults change by platform, region and management policy, verify the exact labels shown in your installed browser before relying on any comparison.
