What software input sharing actually does
A software KVM lets one physical keyboard and mouse operate multiple computers. Each PC continues rendering its own desktop on its own display, while the sharing software sends pointer and keystroke input to whichever machine you select. In the usual layout, moving the pointer beyond the right edge of one screen moves it to the next computer; the keyboard follows the pointer.

Best starting point for two Windows PCs: Mouse Without Borders
Mouse Without Borders is included in Microsoft PowerToys. Microsoft describes it as controlling up to four computers from one machine, which covers a two-PC arrangement. PowerToys is free and supports Windows 11 and Windows 10 version 2004 or later on x64 and Arm64 systems.
Before you begin
- Have administrator permission to install PowerToys on both PCs.
- Connect both computers to the same local network. A wired connection is often more predictable, but Wi-Fi can work when the network allows direct device-to-device communication.
- Write down the host name of the first PC. You can find the Windows computer name in Settings > System > About.
- Keep both displays active during setup so you can verify which computer receives the pointer.
Install PowerToys on both computers
- Install the current Microsoft PowerToys release on the first Windows PC.
- Repeat the installation on the second PC. The feature must be present on both machines; installing it on only one computer cannot create a connection.
- Open PowerToys Settings on each PC after installation.
Generate the connection key on the first PC
- On the computer you want to use as the first machine, open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Mouse Without Borders in the left-hand navigation.
- Choose New Key. PowerToys generates the security key used to pair the computers.
- Leave this window available while you configure the second PC, or copy the key accurately without adding spaces.
Join the second PC
- Open PowerToys Settings on the second computer and select Mouse Without Borders.
- Enter the key generated on the first PC.
- Enter the first PC’s host name, not its user name or a display label.
- Select Connect. When the pairing succeeds, the second computer appears in the device layout.
Match the virtual layout to your desk
Drag the computer icons in Mouse Without Borders so their positions match the physical displays. If the second screen is physically to the left, place its icon on the left; if it is above, place it above. Move the pointer beyond the corresponding edge of one display to cross to the other. A mismatched layout is the most common reason the cursor appears to move in an unexpected direction.
Check the hand-off before relying on it
Move the pointer across each configured boundary and type a short, harmless test in the active window on both PCs. This confirms which computer currently owns the keyboard before you enter a password or start work. If one machine is asleep, locked, disconnected, or no longer running the sharing component, the hand-off cannot be assumed to work; wake or reconnect it and test again.
If Mouse Without Borders will not connect
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to three first checks: network connectivity, the key and host name, and firewall access.
- Confirm the network: Make sure both PCs are connected to the same reachable network rather than isolated guest networks. A public network profile or wireless client isolation can prevent one PC from contacting the other.
- Regenerate and re-enter the key: Create a new key on the first computer, then replace the key on the second. Check for transposed characters.
- Verify the host name: Re-enter the exact Windows computer name shown in Settings. Do not substitute an IP address unless Microsoft’s current interface specifically requests one.
- Review Windows Firewall: Mouse Without Borders provides an option to add a firewall rule. Use it only in accordance with your organization’s policy, and ensure the rule applies to the network profile you are using.
- Refresh the connection: Use the feature’s refresh-connections control after correcting a setting. Restarting Mouse Without Borders on both PCs can clear a stale session.
Unreliable Wi-Fi can also interrupt pointer movement or make the hand-off feel delayed. A TechRadar overview dated October 10, 2026 notes that network-sharing tools can be disrupted on public or unstable networks; treat that as practical context rather than a guarantee that every wireless network will fail.
Clipboard and file transfer: useful, but limited
Mouse Without Borders can share a clipboard between the connected PCs, so copied text can be pasted on the other machine. Microsoft also documents file transfer, but it is not a general synchronization system.
- The documented transfer limit is 100 MB.
- Copy/paste and drag-and-drop do not work for folders or multiple files.
- Microsoft documents additional restrictions involving network files.
For a large folder, repeated transfers, or reliable two-way synchronization, use a separate file-sharing or synchronization method. Do not assume that a successful keyboard-and-mouse connection means every file operation will work through the same channel.

Cross-platform choices: Synergy and Deskflow
If one computer runs macOS or Linux, a Windows-only utility is not suitable. Synergy and Deskflow are the principal cross-platform options described in vendor documentation, but their release requirements and feature details can change. Check the current release notes before deployment.

When Synergy is a better fit
Choose Synergy when you need one keyboard and mouse across a Windows/macOS/Linux mix and want a maintained commercial product with documented layout, hotkey and encryption features. Its official FAQ says both Synergy 1 and Synergy 3 support those three desktop operating systems. It does not provide a mobile or ChromeOS client, and it cannot select a monitor’s video input.
When Deskflow is a better fit
Deskflow is aimed at users who prefer free, open-source software. The project describes TLS as enabled by default, supports Wayland, and includes clipboard sharing. Because package names, desktop-session support and setup procedures are release-dependent, verify those details for the version and distribution you intend to use.
Network and firewall details
All of these software approaches require the computers to communicate directly or through an allowed local service. A corporate firewall, guest Wi-Fi, VPN policy or wireless client-isolation setting can block discovery even when both PCs have internet access.
Synergy port behavior
Synergy’s security documentation describes Synergy 1 as using direct local-network links without a cloud relay and using TCP port 24800 by default. For Synergy 3, port 24800 carries input, while port 24802 carries the settings connection and multicast DNS is used for discovery. The same documentation says the Synergy 3 settings connection is not encrypted with TLS, so treat that channel according to your network’s security policy.
Safer network practice
- Prefer a trusted private network over an open or guest network.
- Allow only the required application and ports through the firewall.
- Do not expose an input-sharing service directly to the public internet.
- On managed PCs, ask an administrator before adding firewall rules or installing a service.
Service mode and elevated Windows applications
Mouse Without Borders includes a service mode that can extend control to elevated applications or the Windows lock screen. That extra privilege is useful when a normal desktop session is not enough, but Microsoft warns that it creates additional security risk.
Leave service mode disabled unless you genuinely need elevated or lock-screen control. If you enable it, limit access to trusted computers, use a strong Windows sign-in, and follow your organization’s endpoint-security policy. A convenience feature that can operate at the lock screen deserves the same scrutiny as any other privileged remote-input component.

One monitor for two PCs: what changes
Software input sharing does not carry HDMI or DisplayPort video. With two monitors, leave one display connected to each PC and move the pointer between them. With one monitor, you can still share input, but the monitor must be switched manually between the computers using its input menu or a separate video switch.

Synergy describes this distinction as working “like a software KVM, but without video.” If you need one-button switching of keyboard, mouse and monitor, a hardware KVM is the appropriate alternative. It changes the method: the KVM sits between the peripherals, video cables and computers, while software sharing remains installed and network-dependent.
How to choose the right method
- Both PCs run Windows: Start with Mouse Without Borders. It is free through PowerToys and has a documented four-computer limit.
- Windows plus macOS or Linux: Compare Synergy and Deskflow. Confirm that your exact operating-system versions, desktop session and security policy are supported.
- You need folder transfers or synchronization: Plan a separate file-sharing tool. Mouse Without Borders’ 100 MB limit and single-file restriction are material constraints.
- You cannot install software: Use a hardware KVM or a peripheral switch, subject to the ports and video standards your computers require.
- You have one monitor: Decide whether manual input switching is acceptable. If not, select hardware that switches video as well as USB.
- Your network is restricted: Check firewall rules, private-network status, discovery settings and any VPN or guest-network isolation before choosing a software method.
- You handle sensitive systems: Avoid unnecessary service or elevated modes, review encryption behavior, and obtain approval for software that can inject input into privileged sessions.
Costs and what you actually need
The Windows setup requires the two existing PCs, their displays, one keyboard, one mouse and a network connection. Microsoft identifies PowerToys as free. You do not need to buy a keyboard-and-mouse bundle, a physical manual or a special transfer cable.
Synergy is commercial software. A TechRadar article dated October 10, 2026 reported prices of $15 for three computers, $19 for five and $29 for 15, with separate enterprise pricing. Those figures are secondary reporting, not confirmed current prices from Synergy’s official pricing page, so check the vendor’s current checkout and license terms before budgeting.
Deskflow is described by its project as free and open source. “Free” does not remove operational costs: you may still need administrator time, packaging, firewall changes or support for a managed environment.

Common problems after a successful setup
The pointer crosses in the wrong direction
Reopen the device layout and place the computer icons to match the physical arrangement. Crossing occurs at the edge represented in that layout, not necessarily at the edge where the monitor sits on your desk.
The keyboard follows the wrong PC
Move the pointer fully onto the intended computer before typing. If the pointer is trapped, use the configured hotkey or move it back across the boundary, then correct the screen arrangement.

Clipboard works but a file does not
Check the file’s size and type of selection. Mouse Without Borders documents a 100 MB ceiling and does not support copying folders or multiple files through its clipboard and drag-and-drop paths.
The connection works at home but not at work
Compare the network profile and firewall policy. A corporate VLAN, VPN, guest SSID or client-isolation rule may prevent local discovery or block the service port. Ask the network administrator for an approved rule rather than disabling protection globally.
What software sharing cannot replace
This method does not merge two computers into one system. Applications, storage, audio output, webcams and displays remain attached to their original PCs unless you configure separate sharing tools. It also does not provide a backup of either machine. Keep each computer’s files and security controls managed locally, even when the pointer and clipboard move between them.
Likewise, software input sharing depends on both endpoints being powered on, signed in as needed and reachable. A hardware KVM may be preferable for a pre-boot screen, a locked-down workstation, or a setup where network connectivity is unavailable. That is a different tradeoff, not a missing step in the software setup.
Bottom line
For two Windows PCs, Mouse Without Borders in Microsoft PowerToys is the most direct software route: install it on both machines, pair them with a generated key and host name, arrange the screens, and move the pointer across the edge. Use Synergy or Deskflow when you need a cross-platform setup, and choose a hardware KVM when switching monitor video or operating without installable software matters more than network-based convenience.
