Neither Edge nor Chrome is a proven all-around winner for privacy, security, speed, RAM use, or battery life. Microsoft and Google document different protections and background-tab features, but those descriptions are not controlled head-to-head tests. Edge offers a clear Tracking Prevention setting with three levels; Chrome’s privacy controls are spread across separate settings. Both browsers provide reputation-based warnings, and both can reduce background resource use—with different effects on tabs and workloads.
At a glance: how Edge and Chrome differ
| Reader concern | Microsoft Edge | Google Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Tracking controls | Tracking Prevention offers Basic, Balanced (Microsoft’s stated default), and Strict. The levels trade off tracking restrictions and possible site compatibility effects. Microsoft documentation | The reviewed Google documentation describes multiple privacy settings and Safe Browsing levels, rather than one directly equivalent tracking-prevention control. Check the settings you have selected. Google privacy overview |
| Threat warnings | Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks website and download reputation. Microsoft says checks can involve URLs, site and device-related information, general location, or file information. Microsoft documentation | Safe Browsing offers Standard and Enhanced protection. Google says Enhanced can send URLs, small samples of page content, and other activity information for additional checks. Google documentation |
| Private browsing | InPrivate clears specified browsing data when all InPrivate windows are closed; it does not make you anonymous to websites or network operators. Microsoft documentation | Incognito is intended to limit what other users of the device can see in the browser. It does not erase websites’ records or hide activity from network operators. Google privacy overview |
| Background tabs and resources | Sleeping Tabs pause inactive pages and release resources; Microsoft says the default inactivity period is one hour, and it can be adjusted. Energy Saver may put tabs to sleep sooner. Microsoft documentation | Memory Saver deactivates unused tabs and reloads them when reopened. It offers Moderate, Balanced, and Maximum levels. | Evidence for a performance winner | Microsoft feature documentation describes intended behavior; it does not establish a controlled comparison with Chrome. | Google feature documentation describes intended behavior; it does not establish a controlled comparison with Edge. |
Is Microsoft Edge more private than Chrome?
It depends on which privacy concern matters to you and how you configure the browser. Edge makes its tracker-blocking choice comparatively explicit: select Basic, Balanced, or Strict. Microsoft describes Balanced as the default, designed to block trackers from sites you do not engage with while limiting compatibility problems. Strict aims for stronger blocking but can cause some sites to behave unexpectedly. Tracking Prevention can restrict known trackers’ access to cookies and other browser storage, and block some tracker resources before they make network requests. Microsoft explains the levels and mechanisms.

Chrome’s privacy controls are not represented in the reviewed documentation by one matching three-level tracking-prevention setting. Its Safe Browsing choice is a security setting, not a general-purpose tracker-blocking mode. Google says Standard Safe Browsing uses local lists and, in its documented design, routes an obfuscated part of a URL through a privacy server. If suspicious behavior is detected, additional data may be sent. Enhanced protection sends more activity information, including URLs and small samples of page content, to support additional checks. That is a security-versus-data-sharing tradeoff, not a simple measure of overall privacy. Google describes Safe Browsing’s levels and data handling.

Security checks can involve information going to the browser provider. Microsoft says SmartScreen may receive URL, site, device-identifier, and general-location information when checking uncategorized websites, as well as file information for download reputation checks. Google says Enhanced Safe Browsing may send URLs, page-content samples, and other activity information. These services help assess risk, but neither should be treated as a promise that no related information leaves the device. Microsoft SmartScreen documentation; Google Safe Browsing documentation.

For a practical choice, inspect both the tracking controls and the selected security level. If you want a plainly labeled tracker-blocking mode, Edge’s Tracking Prevention levels offer that choice. If you use Chrome, review its privacy and security settings individually rather than assuming Safe Browsing is an equivalent tracker control. Your account settings, extensions, websites, and other device or network settings also affect what information is collected or visible.
Which is safer, Edge or Chrome?
Both browsers document protections against malicious or deceptive websites and risky downloads. Edge uses Microsoft Defender SmartScreen for reputation checks and warnings; Chrome Safe Browsing warns about malware, phishing, deceptive sites, risky extensions, and downloads. Chrome’s Standard and Enhanced modes differ in the depth of checks and the information Google says may be sent. Microsoft SmartScreen documentation; Google Safe Browsing documentation.

These are different systems, and vendor feature descriptions do not establish which catches more threats under identical conditions. The documentation reviewed does not provide a current independent, controlled test comparing SmartScreen with Safe Browsing. Neither warning system should be assumed to catch every threat.
- Keep the browser updated so you receive current security fixes.
- Leave a reputable browser protection level enabled, and review what information its checks may send.
- Treat warnings as one layer of defense: avoid suspicious downloads and links, and do not dismiss a warning simply because a page looks familiar.
Which browser uses less RAM?
The available feature descriptions do not establish a measured RAM winner. They show different ways to reduce background-tab use, but actual memory consumption depends on browser version, device, settings, open pages, extensions, and workload.

For everyday use, the key difference is what happens when you return to an inactive tab: Edge describes pausing its activity, while Chrome says a deactivated tab reloads when revisited. Either approach can affect responsiveness or a page’s state, depending on the site. Exclude important sites from the relevant memory or sleeping-tab controls if they need to stay active, and compare with the same set of tabs before deciding which behavior suits you.

The documented features do not answer that with a measured comparison. Edge Energy Saver changes background activity and can sleep tabs sooner; Chrome Energy Saver reduces image capture rate and other background tasks. These mechanisms may lower energy use, but the actual result depends on the device, browser version, settings, power state, and what you are doing. Microsoft warns that Edge Energy Saver can produce visible slowdowns in some scenarios; Google warns that Chrome Energy Saver can affect gaming or video performance. Chrome’s documented support for Energy Saver includes Windows, Mac, and Chromebook devices with a battery. The cited feature descriptions do not establish a comparable platform-availability list for Edge Energy Saver, so do not assume identical availability across devices.
How to compare the browsers on your own device
If your decision depends on battery life or RAM, a repeatable comparison is more useful than a feature label. The following is a proposed test method, not a published benchmark.
- Use the same computer, operating system, power mode, and display settings for each run. Start with a similar battery charge if you are comparing battery drain.
- Install current versions of both browsers and use the same extensions—or disable extensions in both—to avoid measuring add-on differences.
- Open the same sites and tabs, wait for pages to finish loading, and keep the workload consistent. For example, do not compare video playback in one browser with idle pages in the other.
- Set each browser’s memory and energy features to the levels you would actually use. Record settings, including any site exceptions and Edge’s Sleeping Tabs timeout.
- Measure memory and battery use over the same time window, then repeat the run. Note whether returning to a tab caused a reload, delay, or change in media or gaming performance.
Changing one setting at a time helps show whether a result comes from the browser’s default behavior or a particular power-saving level. A result applies to that device, version, configuration, and workload—not to every Edge or Chrome user.
What InPrivate and Incognito actually hide
Neither mode makes you anonymous online. InPrivate and Incognito mainly limit what the browser retains locally after the private session ends. Microsoft says InPrivate clears the listed browsing data when all InPrivate windows are closed. Google describes Incognito as a way to keep browsing private from other users of the device. Microsoft InPrivate information; Google privacy overview.
These modes do not erase records held by websites or make your activity invisible to the network operator. They are also separate from tracker blocking and threat protection: Microsoft explicitly says InPrivate does not add ad blocking or make you safer from malicious sites. Choose Tracking Prevention or other privacy settings for tracking concerns, and keep security protections enabled regardless of whether you use a private window.
