Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most Windows 11 home users, Microsoft Defender is enough as a no-cost antivirus baseline. It is built into Windows 11, stays active in the background, updates automatically and layers real-time, behavior-based, heuristic, cloud-delivered and potentially unwanted application protection. Independent testing is equally important: AV-TEST awarded Defender 6.0 out of 6.0 for protection, performance and usability in its November–December 2025 Windows 11 consumer test.
A paid suite can still be the better choice if you regularly work offline, use restricted networks, need identity monitoring, banking protection, exploit controls, parental controls, broader phishing coverage or paid technical support. The right decision depends less on a “best antivirus” label than on how you use your Windows 11 devices.

What Microsoft Defender includes on Windows 11
Microsoft Defender Antivirus is not a trial download. Microsoft describes it as a next-generation protection solution included in every edition of Windows 11. Windows Security manages it as part of the operating system, so there is no separate licence to renew and no extra installer for a normal Windows 11 PC.

Defender combines several techniques rather than relying on one signature database:
#1 Best Overall
- Real-time scanning checks files, applications and processes as you open or run them.
- Behavior-based and heuristic detection looks for suspicious actions and characteristics, including previously unseen malware.
- Cloud-delivered protection can use Microsoft’s online analysis for new threats when the PC is connected.
- Potentially unwanted application (PUA) protection can block software that is not conventionally classified as malware but may install unwanted advertising, bundlers or other nuisance components.
- Automatic security intelligence updates keep detections current through Windows Update and Defender’s update service.
Defender normally remains on continuously. Microsoft says it turns off automatically when another antivirus product is installed and enabled, preventing two competing real-time engines from scanning the same activity at once.
Windows Security features that sit around the antivirus engine
The Windows Security app also exposes firewall status, account protection, device security, app and browser controls, and ransomware-related settings. Those controls are useful, but their exact availability depends on Windows edition, hardware security features and the applications you install. A third-party antivirus does not automatically replace every Windows security control; it usually integrates with Windows Security while taking over real-time malware scanning.
How strong is Defender in independent testing?
Recent laboratory results show why a blanket claim that “free antivirus is weak” is misleading. They also show why one test score should not be treated as a universal guarantee.
AV-TEST: November–December 2025
In AV-TEST’s Windows 11 consumer report for November and December 2025, Defender received 6.0/6.0 for protection, 6.0/6.0 for performance and 6.0/6.0 for usability. It detected 100% of the prevalent malware samples in both months. Its real-world protection result was 99.3% in November and 100% in December.
Those figures describe the specific products, samples and test conditions used by AV-TEST during that two-month period. They are strong evidence that Defender can perform at the top of the consumer field in ordinary online protection, but they are not a promise that every future file or attack will be blocked.
AV-Comparatives: March and April 2026 results
AV-Comparatives adds a different perspective. In its March 2026 malware test, Defender’s offline detection rate was 89.2%, while several competing products reached 98.6%. The same organisation gave Defender an ADVANCED performance award in April 2026.
“Offline” matters here. An offline test limits or removes cloud assistance, so it measures how well a product can identify threats with locally available intelligence. A Windows 11 PC that is normally online may receive a different result because cloud-delivered analysis can classify a suspicious file after it is encountered. Conversely, a laptop used on flights, remote sites or isolated networks may spend more time in the conditions represented by an offline test.
The two laboratories are therefore not contradictory. AV-TEST shows excellent results in its protection, performance and usability evaluation; AV-Comparatives identifies a scenario in which some third-party engines detected more malware without online assistance.

Defender versus a paid suite at a glance
The table separates what is established about Defender from capabilities that some paid suites commonly market. A feature is not guaranteed merely because a product is labelled “internet security”; check the exact edition for your country and device.
| Decision factor | Microsoft Defender on Windows 11 | Third-party antivirus suite |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase and renewal | Included with Windows 11; no separate antivirus renewal | Usually subscription-based; live price, edition, device count and renewal terms vary by region and promotion |
| Online malware protection | Real-time, behavior, heuristic and cloud-delivered layers; AV-TEST reported 100% prevalent-malware detection in both November and December 2025 | Varies by vendor and version; several products matched or exceeded Defender in particular AV-Comparatives tests |
| Offline malware protection | 89.2% in AV-Comparatives’ March 2026 test | Several products reached 98.6% in that same test; the exact product scores differ |
| Performance | 6.0/6.0 in AV-TEST’s November–December 2025 report; ADVANCED performance award from AV-Comparatives in April 2026 | Can be light or heavy depending on engine, browser extensions, scans and bundled services |
| Phishing and browser coverage | Windows and Microsoft browser protections are integrated; coverage outside Microsoft’s ecosystem can differ | Some suites extend anti-phishing checks across browsers, email clients and messaging links; verify supported browsers |
| Ransomware and exploit controls | Windows includes ransomware and exploit-related controls, with settings and effectiveness dependent on configuration | Some suites add exploit mitigation, protected folders, rollback or dedicated ransomware modules |
| Identity and banking services | No separate Defender consumer identity-monitoring or banking bundle is established here | Some plans add identity monitoring, fraud alerts, secure banking modes or breach notifications |
| Parental controls | Windows and Microsoft-family controls may be available separately, but are not an antivirus feature included in every setup | Some suites bundle web filtering, screen-time rules and child profiles |
| VPN and password manager | Not part of the Defender antivirus baseline | Often included only in higher tiers; limits, locations and storage differ |
| Technical support | Windows and Microsoft support channels apply; no dedicated paid-antivirus concierge is implied | Paid plans commonly advertise vendor support, with contact methods and hours varying |
| Devices per licence | Covered on the Windows installation; no separate antivirus device quota | Plan-dependent; confirm whether the licence covers one PC, several PCs, phones or mixed platforms |
When Microsoft Defender is the sensible choice
Defender is a good fit when your threat exposure is ordinary and your priorities are simplicity, low cost and minimal software overhead.
Typical home use
Stay with Defender if you browse reputable sites, install applications from official stores or known publishers, keep Windows and applications patched, and open email attachments cautiously. Use a standard user account for daily work where practical and leave real-time and cloud protection enabled.
Recommended Free Tools
One or two Windows PCs on a budget
Because Defender is already included, it avoids subscription reminders, trial-to-paid conversions and renewal-price surprises. You can spend the budget on backups, software updates or a hardware security key instead of duplicating malware scanning.
Users who prefer fewer vendors
Defender is maintained through the Windows security stack. If you do not want another company’s browser extension, telemetry policy, password manager or VPN installed, the built-in baseline is easier to audit.
When a third-party antivirus earns its cost
Paid protection is most defensible when you need a specific additional control, not simply because the product box says “premium.”
Frequent offline or restricted-network work
Travel laptops, field systems and isolated workstations may spend substantial time without cloud access. AV-Comparatives’ 89.2% offline result for Defender versus 98.6% for several competitors is a reason to compare engines if offline detection is central to your risk model. It is not proof that every paid product is safer in every online situation.
Identity monitoring and fraud response
If a suite includes breach alerts, credit or identity monitoring, recovery assistance or fraud notifications, those services may be valuable independently of its malware engine. Read exactly what is monitored, which countries are supported, whether a human recovery service is included and what happens after the first subscription year.
Banking and payment protection
Some products provide a hardened banking mode, isolated browser or anti-keylogging features. This can be useful on a shared PC or for users who want a separate, clearly signposted environment for financial transactions. Confirm which browsers and banks are supported; a marketing claim does not guarantee compatibility with every website.
Exploit mitigation and ransomware controls
Security teams or high-risk users may value application-specific exploit rules, protected-folder policies, rollback and additional ransomware telemetry. These controls require configuration. An advanced feature left at defaults may offer less protection than a simpler system that is properly maintained.
Broader phishing coverage
Defender’s strongest integration is within Windows and Microsoft’s own services. A third-party suite can be attractive if you use several browsers, desktop email clients, social platforms or non-Microsoft productivity tools and want one vendor’s link and attachment checks across them. Test the extensions with your normal browser before deploying to a household.
Parental controls and managed households
Family plans may combine malware protection with web categories, search filtering, application limits and schedules. Compare the controls with the operating systems your children actually use; a Windows-only feature will not automatically govern an iPhone, Chromebook or game console.
Paid support
Less technical users may prefer a vendor that offers telephone or chat assistance for alerts, exclusions and cleanup. Check whether support covers malware remediation or only billing and installation, and whether it is available in your region.
Online protection, offline protection and false alarms
Why online scores can look different from offline scores
Cloud reputation systems can recognise a newly seen file quickly, while an offline engine must rely on local signatures, heuristics and behavior rules. A product can therefore score very well online and lower offline without either number being “wrong.” Consider how often your own PC is disconnected, not just the headline percentage.
False positives and usability
Blocking a legitimate utility is a usability failure even if malware detection is excellent. AV-TEST gave Defender 6.0/6.0 for usability in its November–December 2025 report, which indicates a clean result under that laboratory’s criteria. Any antivirus can still flag a niche script, unsigned driver or modified game file. Use the vendor’s quarantine review and exclusion workflow sparingly; excluding a whole download folder can create a larger gap than the original false alarm.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does third-party antivirus slow down a Windows 11 PC?
There is no single speed penalty. Impact depends on the engine, scheduled scans, archive handling, browser extensions, VPN, password manager and the computer’s storage and processor. Defender’s 6.0/6.0 performance score from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives’ ADVANCED performance award show that the built-in product can be efficient, but they do not establish that every third-party suite is slower or faster.

What to measure before keeping a suite
- Boot time and sign-in responsiveness after installation.
- Time to open your usual browser, office applications and development tools.
- Copying or extracting a large archive, which can trigger file scanning.
- Battery drain during a normal workday.
- Gaming frame-time consistency while scans or browser protection are active.
Run the same tasks before and after installation, then inspect the suite’s scan schedule and extension list. If performance drops, disable nonessential add-ons one at a time rather than turning off real-time protection.
Privacy and data practices to compare
Antivirus software necessarily processes file and threat metadata. Defender may send cloud-protection information to Microsoft when cloud features are enabled; third-party products send telemetry to their own vendors. Compare the privacy policy and settings for:
- File hashes, URLs, process names and suspicious samples uploaded for analysis.
- Retention periods and whether samples may be used to improve the service.
- Account requirements for activation and identity features.
- Advertising, cross-service profiling and optional marketing communications.
- Where data is stored and which regional rights apply.
Choose the least data-sharing arrangement that still meets your security needs, and disable optional marketing or diagnostic sharing where the product permits it.

Ransomware, exploits and backups: what antivirus cannot replace
Antivirus is one layer, not a substitute for recovery. Enable Windows updates, use a reputable browser, restrict macros and scripts where practical, and maintain backups that ransomware cannot rewrite. Keep at least one backup offline or otherwise protected from the daily Windows account.
For exploit protection, leave Windows Security defaults enabled unless you understand the application-specific consequence. A third-party exploit module can add value, but overlapping controls can also create compatibility problems with games, accessibility tools or business software. Record any exclusion and review it after updates.
Installation and switching checklist
Before installing a third-party product
- Confirm your Windows 11 edition, architecture and current update status.
- Uninstall expired or trial antivirus products using their official removal tool if normal uninstall leaves drivers behind.
- Back up important files and ensure you can sign in to an administrator account.
- Download the installer from the vendor’s official site or a trusted store, not a pop-up advertisement.
During setup
- Read each optional component screen; decline duplicate VPNs, password managers or browser extensions you do not need.
- Keep real-time protection and automatic updates enabled.
- Allow the installer to register itself with Windows Security so only one real-time engine is primary.
- Restart if requested, then open the product dashboard and confirm that protection and update status are current.
After switching back to Defender
- Use the third-party product’s own uninstall process and restart Windows.
- Open Windows Security and check Virus & threat protection for an active provider and current security intelligence.
- Run a quick scan and verify that firewall and reputation-based protection are still enabled.
- Remove orphaned browser extensions and cancel any subscription you no longer want to renew.
Do not deliberately run two competing real-time antivirus engines. Microsoft says Defender turns off automatically when another enabled antivirus is detected; on-demand scanners can be used separately when they do not install a second always-on engine.

Bitdefender, Norton and ESET are reasonable names to place on a comparison list, but the brand alone does not answer your question. AV-Comparatives includes Bitdefender among the main vendors in its consumer test series; that establishes its participation, not a universal ranking for every edition.

Decision guide by user profile
| Your situation | Practical choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Updated home PC, reputable downloads, normal internet access | Microsoft Defender | Strong tested baseline with no separate subscription |
| Frequent offline work or isolated networks | Compare a third-party engine | Offline test results can differ substantially |
| Family needing web filters and schedules | Suite with verified parental controls | One dashboard may be simpler than separate tools |
| Online banking on a shared or high-risk PC | Suite with suitable banking protection, if compatible | Adds a dedicated transaction environment |
| Several household devices and a VPN or password manager needed | Evaluate a multi-device bundle | Bundling may justify the subscription if limits fit |
| Privacy-minimalist user who dislikes extra extensions | Defender with Windows Security defaults | Fewer third-party services and components |
| Nontechnical user wanting vendor assistance | Paid suite with confirmed support | Human help can matter during an alert or cleanup |
Common mistakes that weaken either choice
- Disabling protection to install software: re-enable it immediately and scan the installer.
- Installing two real-time products: this can cause conflicts, duplicate prompts and extra disk activity.
- Ignoring updates: an excellent engine cannot protect an unpatched browser or operating system reliably.
- Trusting a pop-up “virus” warning: close the page and start a scan from Windows Security or your installed vendor.
- Buying on the first-year price alone: record the renewal date and recurring amount before checkout.
- Assuming a VPN equals anonymity: a VPN changes network routing; it does not make unsafe downloads safe or prevent account takeover.
- Skipping backups: detection cannot guarantee recovery from encryption, deletion or a stolen device.
Verdict: which protection is right for Windows 11?
Choose Microsoft Defender when you have ordinary home usage, keep software updated, download from reputable sources and do not need bundled identity or VPN services. The built-in product is free, continuously maintained and backed by strong recent consumer-lab results: AV-TEST gave it 6.0/6.0 across protection, performance and usability for November–December 2025.
Choose a third-party suite when a clearly identified requirement outweighs the subscription and added software: substantial offline work, independent vendor diversity, identity monitoring, banking protection, exploit mitigation, parental controls, broader phishing coverage or paid support. Use the exact product’s current test results and terms, and keep only one real-time engine active.

Is Microsoft Defender enough for Windows 11 gaming PCs?
For a normally updated gaming PC with reputable game stores and downloads, Defender is a reasonable baseline. Check performance with your own games and avoid adding browser extensions or overlays you do not need.
Can I use an on-demand malware scanner with Defender?
Yes, provided it does not install a second always-on real-time engine. Keep Defender or your chosen antivirus as the single active provider.
Does Defender protect a Windows 11 PC that is offline?
It continues using locally stored signatures and behavior rules, but cloud-assisted analysis is unavailable. AV-Comparatives measured 89.2% offline detection for Defender in its March 2026 test.
Should I pay for antivirus if I already use Microsoft 365?
Check the exact Microsoft 365 plan and features you own. Do not assume a subscription adds a separate antivirus engine; Windows 11 already includes Defender. Buy another suite only for a feature or service you have verified you need.
