Choose Copilot if your routine and permitted work context are already in Microsoft 365; choose ChatGPT if you want a standalone assistant and its own feature set. Your account, license, and task matter more than broad claims about which AI gives better answers.
Quick comparison
| What matters | Microsoft Copilot | ChatGPT |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | People whose everyday work already happens in Microsoft apps, provided their account and license support the context they need. | People who want a standalone assistant workflow, or want to use ChatGPT in Word through its add-in. |
| Work or school data | Access varies by Copilot product, license, and organizational configuration. Copilot Chat without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license does not access shared enterprise or individual data through Microsoft Graph. | The sources reviewed here do not establish equivalent access to a user’s Microsoft 365 work data. |
| Word | Work integration depends on the Copilot product and license. | OpenAI’s September 17, 2026 release notes say ChatGPT is available in Word through an add-in on all ChatGPT plans, including Free, subject to plan usage limits. |

Choose based on where your work happens
Choose Copilot for a Microsoft-centered routine
Copilot is the more natural starting point if you spend much of your day in Microsoft 365 and want help within that environment. Microsoft describes Copilot’s work integration and related capabilities in its enterprise comparison of Copilot and ChatGPT. That page is Microsoft’s own enterprise positioning, not an independent test of everyday performance.

Before assuming it can use your work files or messages, identify which Copilot experience your account provides. Personal Copilot uses a personal Microsoft account; work and school experiences use organizational sign-in, and their work context depends on product and license. Microsoft’s Copilot Chat FAQ distinguishes these experiences.

Choose ChatGPT for a standalone assistant—or for Word access
If you prefer to open a separate assistant rather than center your workflow on Microsoft apps, ChatGPT may be the more straightforward fit. It is also not limited to a separate browser or app for Word users: OpenAI’s release notes, in the entry dated September 17, 2026, say the Word add-in is available on all ChatGPT plans, including Free. Normal plan usage limits apply.

What Copilot can access depends on the version
“Copilot” does not describe one interchangeable product. Personal Copilot, work or school Copilot Chat, and Microsoft 365 Copilot have different account and data-access conditions. A work or school sign-in alone does not mean Copilot Chat can search an organization’s Microsoft Graph data.
- Copilot Chat without a Microsoft 365 Copilot license: Microsoft says it cannot access shared enterprise data, individual data, or external data indexed through Microsoft Graph connectors.
- Files you upload: You can provide files directly for analysis; this is distinct from Copilot finding files in company systems.
- Specific connected sources: Some organizations may enable metered agents for particular sources.
Microsoft documents Copilot Chat features such as file analysis, Edge page summaries, image uploads, dictation, and read-aloud. Availability can vary with license, tenant configuration, and rollout, so check the experience your organization has enabled. See Microsoft’s Copilot Chat FAQ for access distinctions and its Copilot Chat feature documentation for feature details.

Understand work-account privacy and administration
For users signed in to Copilot Chat with a work or school account, Microsoft describes enterprise data protection and says prompts and responses are not used to train foundation models. It also says prompts, related Bing queries, and responses are logged and may be accessible to IT administrators. “Not used to train” does not mean “not logged.” These statements apply to the documented work or school experience, not automatically to every personal Copilot product. Consult Microsoft’s data protection guidance and your organization’s policies before entering sensitive information.

The cited product documentation and release notes do not establish that Copilot or ChatGPT consistently gives better answers to everyday questions. Feature lists, integrations, and a vendor’s own comparison cannot substitute for a controlled, like-for-like test.

For a task that matters, try both with the same prompt and the same material. Compare whether each gets the facts right, follows constraints, handles uncertainty, and produces something you can use with less correction. Avoid sharing confidential work information with a personal account just to run a comparison.

Microsoft AI’s December 2025 preprint, “It’s About Time: The Copilot Usage Report 2025”, analyzes 37.5 million deidentified Microsoft Copilot conversations sampled from January through September 2025. It describes usage patterns by device and time, not which assistant performs better. The sample excludes enterprise traffic and users signed in with commercial or educational enterprise accounts, so it also does not represent every Copilot user.

Practical decision
- Pick Copilot if Microsoft 365 is already where you work and your specific Copilot account and license provide the access you need.
- Pick ChatGPT if you want a standalone assistant, or if the ChatGPT Word add-in suits your document workflow.
- Try both on a representative task if answer quality is your deciding factor; the available evidence does not name a universal winner.
