Steam Deck Verified means Valve has checked a game and found it works well on Deck without extra configuration for a complete experience. The badge covers usability and compatibility—not a promise of 60 frames per second in every scene. To understand a specific game’s result, open its Steam Store page and read the Steam Deck Compatibility details.
What do the four Steam Deck compatibility labels mean?
| Label | What Valve’s result means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Deck out of the box, without extra user configuration for a complete experience. | Expect the game to meet Valve’s checks for controls, display, usability, and system compatibility. The label does not guarantee a particular frame rate in every scene. |
| Playable | The game functions, but may require an adjustment or workaround. | Read the compatibility details for the specific issue. It may involve choosing a community control layout, using the touchscreen, or manually opening the on-screen keyboard. |
| Unsupported | Valve currently considers the game nonfunctional on Deck, or it failed a blocking compatibility check. | Check the Store page’s stated reason. Unsupported is a review result, not the same as an untested game. |
| Unknown | Valve has not completed a compatibility check for the game. | There is no Valve rating yet; the label alone does not indicate whether the game works or fails. |
Valve describes the program as an ongoing review of the Steam catalog. Ratings may change as games, Proton, and the Deck improve. For a game Valve has tested, its rating applies to both the LCD and OLED Steam Deck models. Check the individual game’s compatibility section for its current result. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page and Steam Support’s troubleshooting guide explain the labels.
What does Verified check?
Valve evaluates whether a game is usable on the handheld, not just whether it starts. Its criteria cover the following areas:
- Controls and input: Built-in Deck controls should work, and on-screen button prompts should match the active input. Required text entry should be possible with a controller and the on-screen keyboard, or through an equivalent in-game flow.
- Display and readability: The game should support a Deck resolution. Valve’s overview names 1280×800 or 1280×720. Steamworks says the smallest font character should be at least 9 pixels high at 1280×800 and recommends aiming for 12 pixels where possible.
- Navigation and interruptions: Compatibility warnings should not appear, and any launcher should be navigable with a controller. A launcher that requires touchscreen input can make the game Playable rather than Verified.
- System and Proton support: Games running through Proton, including required middleware such as anti-cheat, need to work. A blocking Proton issue can lead to an Unsupported result, with a possible retest after it is addressed.
- Default performance: Valve’s Steamworks review criteria specify a playable default configuration at 30 fps at 800p.
The detailed criteria are in Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review.

What is the difference between Verified and Playable?
Both labels indicate that Valve reviewed the game, but they signal different levels of out-of-the-box usability. Verified is for a complete experience without extra user configuration. Playable means the game functions but may ask you to handle a step manually—for example, selecting a community controller layout or tapping through a launcher with the touchscreen.
A game can support the Deck’s controls and still receive Playable if an isolated step requires touch input or setup. Valve recommends that developers use Steam Input so button prompts show the correct glyphs for supported controllers. When deciding whether a Playable game will suit you, look for the exact unmet requirement in its compatibility details rather than assuming every Playable game has the same limitation.

Can you play Unsupported or Unknown games on Steam Deck?
Unknown means Valve has not checked the game, so it is not a finding that the title is incompatible. Unsupported means Valve’s current review found a blocking problem or judged the game nonfunctional on Deck. The label tells you Valve’s result; it does not provide a general guarantee about what will happen in every user’s setup.
For either label, use the game’s Steam Store compatibility section to see whether Valve has listed a reason. The available labels do not establish a universal outcome for untested titles or a workaround for a game marked Unsupported.

Does Verified mean a game runs at 60 FPS?
No. Valve’s Steamworks checklist sets a 30 fps at 800p playable-performance criterion for the default Deck configuration. That is a review criterion, not a guarantee that every scene, update, or user-selected setting will hold that frame rate. Valve’s public overview describes good default settings but does not promise one universal frame rate across all gameplay.
Use the badge to understand the result of Valve’s compatibility review, not as a substitute for a specific frame-rate promise. The public criteria cited here do not establish a Verified requirement of 60 fps.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Why might a Playable game need touchscreen or controller setup?
Playable allows for a game to function while requiring a small manual adjustment. A launcher may not be fully navigable with the controller, or the game may need a different control layout than the default. Valve’s compatibility details identify requirements that were not met for Playable and Unsupported games.
Valve’s March 4, 2022 announcement offered historical examples of edge cases: a title that usually showed controller prompts but occasionally asked the player to “press F” could be Playable; a crash in an optional minigame or a tutorial video failing to render could lead to Unsupported under the standards described in that announcement. Those are examples from 2022, not a rule that every similar issue receives the same rating today. Read Valve’s 2022 Deck Verified update.

How to check a game’s current compatibility details
- Open the game’s Steam Store page or find the game in your Steam Library.
- Locate the Steam Deck Compatibility section or details for that game.
- Read the listed reason if the game is Playable or Unsupported; the badge by itself does not explain which requirement was missed.
- For a comparison between games, check their controller support and glyphs, launcher and text-entry steps, display and text legibility, Proton or middleware support, and stated default-performance result.
Valve reviews compatibility on an ongoing basis, so a game’s result can change. The official program page does not provide a dated current count of games in each category.
