To set up Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, pair them with your phone or computer, then use Sony’s Sony | Sound Connect smartphone app to adjust supported sound settings, check firmware, and enable two-device multipoint if needed. Pairing steps vary by source device, so use Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support page and Help Guide for the exact sequence for your phone or computer.
Pair the WH-1000XM5 with your phone or computer
Start with Sony’s WH-1000XM5 support page, which links to the model’s Help Guide and software downloads. Follow the Help Guide’s instructions for your specific source device; the pairing sequence can differ between phones and computers. Once paired, you can use the headphones normally and connect them to Sony’s smartphone app for customization.

Connect to Sony | Sound Connect
Install and open Sony | Sound Connect on a smartphone, then follow the app’s prompts to connect the headphones. If you see older setup instructions referring to Sony | Headphones Connect, that is the app’s former name. Sony says there is no PC app, so supported customization is done from a smartphone. The app’s available features and menus depend on the connected headphone model and software.
Customize sound and listening settings
Sound Connect lists several controls for supported models. Adjust them to suit where you are listening and what you prefer; Sony does not prescribe one best configuration for everyone.

Check and update the firmware
- Connect the WH-1000XM5 to Sound Connect on your smartphone.
- Open Device settings and check the firmware version shown for the headphones.
- If the app offers an update, follow its on-screen instructions. Keep the phone’s connection stable and the headphones and phone adequately charged. Do not turn off the headphones or charge them during the firmware download, transfer, or update.
Sony’s firmware page records version 2.5.1 as released on December 18, 2025. That is the version on that release record, not a guarantee it remains the newest version; check the app and Sony’s firmware support page for the version available to you.

Connect two devices with multipoint
Multipoint lets the WH-1000XM5 connect to two devices at the same time, such as a phone and a computer. It is a two-device connection, not an unlimited list of simultaneous sources.
