Start with reversible steps: update SteamOS, restart the Deck, and temporarily close third-party apps. Then check whether the problem affects one game or several, review that game’s compatibility rating, and follow the branch for stuttering, crashes, or launch failures. These steps can narrow down common causes, but none guarantees a fix: Steam notes that instability can have multiple causes and diagnosis depends on the system and game.
Start with the Steam Deck before changing a game
Install any available SteamOS update and restart the device. If you installed third-party applications through Desktop Mode, close or disable them temporarily and retest. This gives you a simpler baseline before changing game-specific settings.

- Press the Steam button and open Settings > System > Software Updates.
- Install any available update, then restart the Steam Deck.
- Temporarily close or disable third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode.
- Launch the affected game again and note whether the symptom changes.
If the same problem continues in several games, treat it as potentially device-wide. If only one game is affected, focus next on that game’s compatibility, files, and settings.
Check whether the problem is limited to one game
Steam says its Deck Verified system has four categories that indicate how well games will work on Steam Deck. Check the affected game’s Store page and read any listed requirements it does not meet; the label is useful guidance, not an unconditional promise about how the game will behave on your particular device.

- SteamOS 3.0 (Arch-based)
- 512GB NVMe SSD, 16GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM (5500 MT/s quad 32-bit channels), microSD UHS-I supports SD, SDXC and SDHC
- 6 nm AMD APU, CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32
| Rating | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Verified | The game works great on Steam Deck by default. |
| Playable | The game may need manual configuration. |
| Unsupported | The game is not considered playable at the time of the rating. |
| Unknown | Compatibility has not been tested. |
Ratings and game behavior can change as games and software evolve. If several unrelated games show the same instability, a single title’s rating is less likely to explain the broader pattern.
If Steam Deck games stutter
Stuttering means the game launches but does not run smoothly. Check the game’s system requirements, then reduce its graphics preset or lower individual graphics settings to reduce the load. Requirements alone do not guarantee a particular frame rate or smooth performance on the Deck.

- If needed, adjust demanding individual settings and compare how the game behaves.
- Keep the display refresh-rate cap in mind: Steam’s basic troubleshooting guide states that the LCD model is capped at 60 Hz and the OLED model at 90 Hz. Settings above the cap do not improve performance and may drain the battery faster.
If a Steam Deck game keeps crashing or content is missing
Verify the installed game files in Steam. This is a useful game-specific check for crashes or missing content, and it does not require resetting the device.

- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish; it can take several minutes.
Steam says a report that one or more files failed to verify can be normal for many games when the files are local configuration files; those results can be ignored. Do not verify multiple games at once or run verification while doing other intensive work.

If a Steam Deck game won’t launch or remains unstable
After updating and restarting, try a compatibility tool for the affected game if it is a Steam app. In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility, enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version available in the list. If Proton is already selected, you can test another appropriate version and retest.
Steam warns that selecting Proton can prompt a download of the Windows version of a game if only its Linux version was installed. Allow for that download before judging whether the change helped.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
If the game still fails to launch, consult Steam Deck discussions or contact Steam Support. For a problem confined to one application, the game’s developer may also need to investigate it.

Choose the right next step before system recovery
Rollback, repair, factory reset, and re-imaging are system-recovery choices—not routine first steps for one game’s crash. Use them only when ordinary troubleshooting has failed and the symptoms point to a broader SteamOS problem. Their effects on local data differ:
Best Value
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
| Recovery option | Data and content effect | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Rollback to the previous SteamOS version | Retains user data. | When a broader issue appears tied to the current OS version. |
| Repair | Attempts to preserve games and personal content. | When SteamOS needs recovery and preserving content matters. |
| Factory reset | Clears local data. | Only after considering the loss of local data and other options. |
| Re-imaging | Wipes user information, installed games, applications, or operating systems. | As a more extensive recovery step, with the consequences understood in advance. |
Check Steam’s current recovery instructions before proceeding, since procedures and menu paths can change with software updates. If you are unsure which option fits a device-wide problem, contact Steam Support before choosing a data-erasing step.
